The Class of 1975 has been fortunate over the years to have had numerous sponsor- ship. All of these individuals have made significant and self- less contributions. However, two advisors have each made a contribution which requires special notice. During the last four years the Class of 1975 has had the bene- fit of working closely with two individuals who possess similar talents. Not only are they full AND TIMOTHY REARDON time teachers, hut also team coaches. They have consist- ently shown, on and off the courts, patience, vitality, under- standing, and a deep concern in all their endeavors. Above all, they have been friends, as well as counselors to the class. For these reasons, the Class of 1975 dedicates its yearbook to Mrs. Doris Kozuck and Mr. Timothy Reardon. Thank you both for all the time and effort you have put in to make our years at Burlington City High School more memorable ones. Each class has a composition of many individuals who have had various experiences in their lives so far. and who will travel widely differing paths in the years to come. The point in time at which the Class of 75 is graduating from Burlington City High School is also a period of time that differs from all past and future times. Although problems and crises have existed for all graduating classes, the difficulties confronting your « lass seem to be most serious and even critical in terms of our survival as a nation and a civilized society. There are the shortages of energy and food; of jobs and money; of good housing; of clean air and water; of a thorough and efficient education; of justice and economic opportunity, for all Americans. We need to solve these problems, and our solutions need to be more than temporary ones. You graduates must continue to educate yourselves so that you can cope with these enormous obstacles. Commencement exercises should not signify an end to your education, but a beginning of a new and different kind of education, pro- vided by new experiences in life, on the job. and working with others, as well as in classes. The education that you receive from now on may be practical and pragmatic in nature. As you realize that you are now a mature citizen in a democratic country, we hope that you also believe that you have been given a good, sound foundation of learning — a basic education — for the learning and living ahead of you. It's up to you now to build successfully upon it, and attain your goals. Congratulations, and our best wishes for happiness and success to each member of the Class of 75. Raymond A. Costello Mr. Raymond A. Costello — Princifxtl Mr. Angelo Albano Athletic Director Mr. Rollin Cunningham — Asst. Prin. in Charge of Student Personnel Mr. William Burr — Asst. Principal Mr. Howard Moore — Attendance Officer GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT The objectives of the Guidance Office are to provide services and information that will enable students to make decisions that will lead to successful pursuit of goals in regard to studies, career choices, further education, social and personal growth or any other area in which the student wants or needs help. Mr. Otis Fields Miss Faye Newkirk Mr. Andrew James Mrs. Jane Bowers Mr. Carmel Colofranson STUDENT SERVICES The Special Education Department attempts to educate those students whose needs cannot be met by the regular classes. The department tries to promote general understanding between its students and the rest of the school. To develop expertise in many areas, the students provide various services for the school community. The Joseph W. Howe Library is a learning resource center in which students can draw upon literary media as well as audio-visual aides. The primary goal of the library is to provide students with a total learning experience that is supplemental to the classroom. The basic objective is to meet the individual needs and interests of the students. Mr. Ahearn provides audio-visual materials for the Burlington school system. He is responsible for scheduling movies and teaching students how to operate different types of equipment. His students also provide the lighting effects for the school plays. The school nurse is a very important member of the staff. Her patient concern about the health and well being of the staff and student body is vital to the educational process. Mr. John Parkes — Special Education Mrs. Helen Walton — Library Aide Miss Susan Sullivan — Special Education Miss Pauline Zaugra — School Nurse Mrs. Anne Parkes — Special Education Mr. Herbert Nelson — Librarian Mr. Joseph Ahearn — 25 Audio-Visual Aides MUSIC AND ART The Burlington City High School Art Department strives to serve its student body through artistic offerings in the various art media. The students adventure through numerous projects, working at their own individual speed and interest. The instructor coaches and encourages the students to expand their artistic and aesthetic senses. The Music Department focuses its attention on technique and skill development. Under the direction of Mr. Frank Bonanno and Mr. Dawson McElwee, many innovations have come about. The department now boasts of an award winning Marching Band, an orchestra, a Stage Band and many new ensemble groups. Never before has there been a time when man so needed the arts to enable him to live a more creative and fruitful life. Therefore the Music and Art Department strives, mainly, to teach students an appreciation and working knowledge of cre- ative artistry. Mr. Dawson McElwee Mr. Frank Bonanno Miss Judith Hoyt Department Chairman — Mr. Martin Boonin SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT One of the goals of the Social Studies Department is to promote better understanding of human relationships — past, present, and future. The Department has implemented several changes to foster achievement of this worthy goal. New courses, such as Local History, Anthropology, Urban Studies, and Non-Western Cultures, now complement the traditional programs: American History, Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, Economics, World Problems, and The Humanities. The Department is continuously seeking ways to achieve this goal and will continue making significant changes aimed at keeping pace with the challenges posed by the growing complexities of American and World cultures. Mr. David Burolicll Mr. Dominic Cicali — Mr. Edward Sanderson 27 Department Chairman ENGLISH DEPARTMENT The Class of 1975 was the first class to experience a major change in the English program. In the freshman and sophomore years the present graduates followed the usual English program. One teacher taught all phases of English for the entire school year to the same classes. For many reasons in 1972-1973, the English program was rearranged for the juniors and seniors. Now in each year, eight mini-courses are offered. The first semester includes four skills courses of five weeks duration each. Four different English teachers rotate classes so that each junior and senior takes these; mini-courses: Development Reading, Speech, Language, and Composition. The second semester consists of four literature mini-courses of five weeks duration each. Four English teachers then again rotate these four mini-courses covering the four types of literature study: Drama, the Novel, Poetry, and Prose. In the junior year American Literature is the source of reading; in the senior year, English Literature supplies the reading mate- rial. ENGLISH DEPARTMENT In addition, the pure electives program of the English Department includes offerings such as World Literature, Media Studies, Advanced Composition, Creative Writing, and Journalism. These elective courses are geared for enrichment as well as for further English skills development. The concentrated mini-courses approach with each teacher focusing attention on a specialty should guarantee that the graduates will possess adequate basic communication skills in after school years. Our school expects its graduates to be well prepared in their language whether their plans include further education or call for taking a place in the modern social and economic world. As pioneers in this rearranged English program, the Class of 1975 has contributed greatly to the educational advancement of future BCHS students as well as having gained a fuller and more practical understanding of their language and literature. Mrs. Irene Graves Mrs. Lcanore Reiner Miss Antoinette Hall Mr. Dennis Corbett Mrs. Quovadis Blackburn Mrs. Barbara Keller SCIENCE DEPARTMENT The science courses offered in our school are designed with two purposes in mind. Some courses as Earth Science, Biol- ogy, Chemistry and Physics will prepare a student for college work in the sciences. But in addition, the courses will provide a well-rounded background in the sciences for anyone wishing the knowledge to understand the scientific and technological world around us. A course in Physical Science is offered for those students not interested in the content depth of Chemistry and Physics hut would still like to know more about the physical sciences. The Electronics course has been initiated so that our students will have a survey of the electrical-electronics fields. To help the students understand the principles of Biology and Earth Science in action, we take a trip with some 11th grade students to Stokes State Fort ! in the spring. A trip to Longwood Gardens gives the students a chance to see Biology at work in another way and it also shows the students the many job opportunities in such a field. INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPARTMENT The philosophy of the Industrial Arts and Vocational department is threefold. The first is to provide a part of the student’s general education. The second is to offer, for those students who desire it, the opportunity to develop a vocational skill at the job entry level. Providing career information which is related to our particular shops is third. While we have retained the traditional courses this year, we have experienced evolutionary changes. One example is the increasing number of female students taking our courses. As the old beliefs of male-female roles are changing, more and more women are entering jobs in formerly men only” occupations. MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT The Mathematics Department of B.C.H.S. strives to have each student understand and be able to apply the principles of mathematics in everyday life. Mathematics, studied in conjunction with science, business, and industrial arts, is an essential stepping-stone in the process of choosing and preparing for careers in these fields. Some of the innovations in the math department include working with the? programmed computer and the new electronic calculators in the advanced math program. In the applied math program, the students will be studying navigation and its relation to flying and boating. PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT For ihe past throe years, the Physical Education Dept, has developed a co-edueational concept of P.E. The primary goal of this approach is to offer a greater variety of activities to the students, and to allow each student to select activities according to his or her own ability. Because of this approach, the Physical Education Dept, is able to make better use of the available facilities and to promote more efficient use of both the students’ and the instructors’ time. Mr. Harold Caldwell Mrs . Mary Gusz K Mr. Joseph Costello Miss Barbara Moycrman Mrs. Doris Ko .uck Mr. Gary McCormick «iu Mr. Jack Lukis — Dc Mirtmerit Chairman HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT The world is experiencing unforeseen changes that are affecting this country as well. The age of plenty has come to an end and we are entering a period of scarcities. Life’s values are being reexamined. Practically the entire content of home econom- ics studies bears on this process. Home Economics studies offer vital concepts in adjusting and coping with the changing life environment of America. This department’s teaching method relies on an easy personal relationship between student and teacher. The informal arrangement of the home economics classroom binds itself to free exchange of ideas in a relaxed atmosphere. Here the com- plexities of diet, dress, and consumerism, in a rapidly changing society, can be comprehensively studied. Given today’s pres- sures, curriculum applicability and the practicability of course content are emphasized. Mrs. Ruth Dinsmore Mrs. Mary Platt — Department Chairman Miss Janet Knickerbocker FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT The Foreign Language Department offers four years of study in French, German and Spanish. It is hoped that students will find the development of their skill in a foreign language useful in a career, travel, or simply to gain insight into the lives of other people. Foreign language study may be considered a humanistic study whose primary value lies in the enrichment of the individual, although the pragmatic aspect is not to be ignored. A significant variety of techniques is used in class to help students progress and enjoy the courses. The films, slides, tapes, dances, songs, sample dishes, etc. enhance the awareness of similarities and contrasts with respect to our culture and that of native speakers of the language being studied. This, hopefully, will lead to greater world understanding. Mile. Patricia DePersia Mmc. Barbara Fisher — Department Chairman Sr. Timothy Ryan 35 BUSINESS DEPARTMENT Mrs. Ann MrKci Mrs. Darlene MacCrindle The traditional Business Education fields of secretarial work and bookkeeping have, in recent years, been supplemented by the addition of Data Processing. All phases of educational training in this department have been broadened by the addition of many types of business machines, electric typewriters, and dictating equipment. Hopefully, stenotype will soon become part of the new and complete business preparation. In the future, with additional staff, we would like to introduce a cooperative office program. Our students would be in school in the mornings and report to Miss Maria Marrcn Mr. Patrick Giangiulio assigned business offices in the afternoons. The other phase which we would like to promote is a follow-up of our most recent business graduates. We could profit much from their experiences in the business world, and our courses could become most meaningful and realistic. The department prides itself in offering to the business community well prepared graduates who are responsive to the needs of today’s offices. SECRETARIES Where would the students and faculty of B.C.H.S. be without our secretarial staff? Certainly we would be without the morn- ing bulletin of activities, the daily absentee report, the lunch menu, the do not admit” list, late passes, excused slips, unex- cused slips, and Mr. Cunningham’s admit passes. Furthermore, we would probably be without phone messages, dropped off lunch money, forgotten gym articles, missing wallets and purses, and the entire lost and found. In addition, we would be without college applications, parent teacher conferences, report cards, class rank, failure notices, P.S.A.T., A.C.T., and the Kuder Occupation scores, just to name a few. Therefore, for services beyond the call of duty, the students and faculty give special commendation and thanks to our school secretaries. Mrs. Betty Foster— Guidance Office 38 Mrs. Shirley Stoll — Disciplinarian's Office Mrs. Kaye Schmidt — Main Office Mrs. Marie Lewis — Guidance Office Miss Elaine Clawges Guidance Office Mrs. Jodey Baldorossi — Main Office STUDENT TEACHERS Burlington City has been extremely fortunate this year to have had a large number of practice teachers assisting our students. We were privileged to have Miss Judd in English, Mr. Mortin in Auto Shop, Miss Keener in Physical Education, and Mr. Moore and Miss DeGerallimo in the Art Department. Their apprenticeship was a true learning experience for everyone concerned. We would like to extend to them a full and sincere thank you.” SENIORS SENIORSSENIORSSENIORSSENIORSSENIORSSENIORSSENIOR SENIORSSENIORSSENIORSSENIORSSENIORSSENIORSSENIOR SENIORSSENIORSSENIORSSENIORSSENIORSSENIORSSENIOR SENIORSSENIORSSENIORSSFWDRSSENIORSSENIORSSENIOR SENI ORSSENIOR ° SSENIORSSENIOR SENIORSSENr SENIOR SSr SENIORS SENIOR SENIOR SENIOR SENIOR. Many Thanks, from the Class of ’75 Senior Class Officers I lie class of 1975 owes much of iheir success to their class officers. It has been, through the years, their enthusiasm that has sparked class spirit. They have provided the class with the drive needed for many enjoyable and financially rewarding activities. Our four years at Burlington City High School hold pleasant memories of car washes, hoagie sales, bake sales, trips to Wash- ington and the Poconos, activity nights, fashion shows, Junior-Senior Proms, Junior-Senior Parties, and many, many more.
