Copy Editors 3 'pareco uC As we, the graduating class of 1962, test our wings and pre- pare to fly off into the world on our own, we pause a moment to look back on the three years we spent at Burlington Senior High School. While we have been progressing in Burlington, the world has been progressing into space and aviation. The success of our high school life and our activities; the plays, the party and prom, the sports events and others, have all been enhanced by our country’s outreaching hand in the sky. Upon graduation we will be called upon to further this reach and as we all go our separate ways, we will have this Heirloom to look at and remember these three years. We now take off on our journey into The Air Age. We hope you enjoy the trip. 4 ‘DecUcatcoa Dear Mrs. Wilson, As Graduation Day, 1962, rapidly approaches, and we remember the events which have filled the last three years, your part in our stay at B.H.S. particularly stands out in our minds. Although too few of us have known you in the class- room, the guidance and leadership you have shown as one of our class sponsors have contributed to making our stay here an enjoyable one. You have given your willing help to ensure the success of every class function, making invaluable sug- gestions, smoothing out the rough spots,” and inspiring confidence in us all. It is with deepest sincerity that we dedicate the 1962 Heirloom to you, Mrs. Geraldine Wilson, as a small indication of the gratitude we feel toward you for your efforts, which have made our class one that can be proud of its contributions to B.H.S. Sincerely, The Class of 1962 5 £ uvui £ Mr. Frederick Foreman; Mr. George Tyler; Dr. Joseph Howe, Superintendent of Schools; Mr. Milton Rosenberg, President; Mr. Arthur Cooper, Secretary, Mrs. Cornelius Hogan; Mr. William Bell. Congratulations upon your graduation from high school! It is later than you think as one looks for- ward to the space age. Your high school edu- cation is not the end of your preparation for life; it is merely the beginning. Whether you go directly into employment or go on to college we are confident you will meet the challenge of the new age and serve your gener- ation well. JOSEPH W. HOWE Superintendent of Schools 6 You arc entering upon what could be either the most prosper- ous era mankind has ever known, or one in which man will prove that he prefers to devote his ener- gies toward self-destruction. Only time will tell which it shall be. If the former, we hope you will make wise use of your inheritance; if the latter, we hope you will ac- cept our apologies for having left you such a worthless legacy. WALTER D. WITHKA Administrative Assistant To the graduating class of 1962: Today more emphasis is placed on education than any time in history. The effort you have made in your past school years. and will make in the future will always pay dividends. Usually the divi- dend is in direct proportion to your effort. As you leave Burlington Senior High School, keep your desire to learn as a guiding light ahead of you at all times. Strive to improve yourselves so that the world through wisdom and knowledge may someday live in peace. ROBERT F. Rinehold. s4 t uc z t ?teU Service Sxcfautye Student When I first arrived in the U.S.A., I, as most A.F.S. students, was very anxious to see how the American school functions. I met with many new and exciting experiences during the past year. I was a little surprised at first at the length of the school day and year and at the amount of homework, but thanks to countless teachers and students the work was made easier. During the year I’ve taken English IV, chemistry, American History II, World Problems, and French III. All of these subjects were very interesting to me. In Italy I attend a school where scientific subjects are stressed. When I return I will have one more year of high school in Naples. I will then go to a University near Venice where I will study to be a chemical or physical engineer. American sports, especially football, were new to me, but I soon learned to really enjoy them. I enjoyed watching the band and cheerleaders because these were all strange to me. All the teachers and students have been so kind to me and have helped me greatly throughout the year. For this I thank you, and you may be assured that where ever I go, B.S.H.S. will always carry fond memories for me. Two groups which are seldom recognized at BSHS are the office runners and the finance helpers. Although the two groups are not closely related, each performs an im- portant service for the school. The office runners, who have given up their study halls, have the job of running er- rands for the main office and guidance office, performing the duty one period each day. The money from all school activities passes through the hands of the finance help- ers and their advisor, and they are responsible for seeing that each activity account at BSHS balances. S. Mann, V. Our last year at B.S.H.S. was filled with many accomplishments and several firsts.” In November, we presented the Junior-Senior Party to the background of a Carou- sel” theme. The Broadway hit, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, scored high among the ranks of B.S.H.S. play productions as we presented it for our senior play. The activity-filled month was rounded off when our first Homecoming Queen was crowned during Thanksgiving’s Alumni Day ceremonies. Two annual events, the Christmas Ball and the International Ball, added to the ex- citement of the winter months, and Welfare Week, held in mid-March, once again proved to be a big success. Many of us attended the Prom given in May by the juniors, and the year was made complete with Graduation Day and the distribution of the 1962 Heirloom. Proceeds from the Heirloom, the play, and the student-operated Snack Shack helped to make our senior year at B.S.H.S. a rewarding and profitable one. 40 FADIA S. ABOUELAILA KITTRIDGE ADAMS CHARLES V. Filled with suspense and tragedy, as well as comedy, it kept our audience on the edge of their seats. The drama began with a play-with- in-the-play, set five hundred years in the future. Suddenly, the theatre lights went out, and a shot was fired. The star of the play lay dead on the stage. Through the brain-work of Detective Sergeant Kennedy and his Chinese as- sistant, Sam Lee, the suspects were nar- rowed down to five people in the au- dience. A sinister spy ring was re- vealed, but not before a woman • was poisoned and a corpse vanished and re- appeared. As the curtain came down, everyone had the warm feeling associated with success. This time, having lost some of our stage fright and gained self-confidence, we were ready and willing to play the role of thespian again. Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House” was an uproarious comedy in which Jim Blandings, a typical urbanite, decided to move out into the country. After buying an old farm dwelling which he planned to renovate, Blandings discovered all was not as easy as it appeared. Opposition from his daughters and from a local ladies’ aid society brought problems with no visible solutions. Muriel Blandings added comedy with her scatterbrained ideas. But, as usual, the play ended happily, and was another success for our class. We all hated to end our performance, knowing it would be the last time we would act on the stage of B.H.S. But perhaps this experience will enable some of us to con- tinue our acting and producing in later life. Go to school winters. Fifth grade.
