I Our four years in Burlington Senior High School can readily be compared with the making and pro- ducing of a television spectacular. Both require hard work, ingenuity, initiative, foresight, and planning. Each has a definite goal and climax— for us, graduation; for a spectacular, opening night. Our spectacular was produced under the aus- pices of our teachers, our counselors, our Heirloom staff, and our friends. The setting is B.S.H.S.; the time, 1955-1959 inclusive; the starring cast, the Class of '59. The prom, the dances, the games, and our plays are all star attractions of our spectacular. More im- portant, however, is the knowledge and under- standing that we have acquired through this un- dertaking. It is from this experience that our self- confidence, character, and ideals were developed. The stage is set, the actors are in their places, the house lights are dimmed. Our spectacular is about to begin! The capacity studio audience stirs restlessly as the viewers at home settle back into their favorite chairs. Slowly, ever so slowly, the curtain rises. Our fondest dreams have become a reality. We now invite you, the audience, to share these never-to-be-forgotten moments with us, the Class of '59. 'DecUcatcoit An outstanding person who has had much in- fluence on the Class of '59 is our dedicatee, Mr. John Maher. Mr. Maher became a favorite with many of us as a teacher of American history. Since that time, we have been impressed by his casual manner and warm friendiness. We have had the pleasure of working with Mr. Aaher on many of our class projects as he is one of our class advisors. It is from this that we have witnessed the genuine interest that Mr. Maher takes in us. It is with sincere appreciation for the guidance and interest you have shown us that we dedicate the 1959 HEIRLOOM to you, Mr. John Maher. Left to right: Mrs. Cornelius D. Hogan, Dr. Joseph E. Fidanza, Dr. Joseph W. Howe, Frederick H. Forman, Arthur J. Cooper, George R. Tyler, Milton Rosenberg. OoCl The Board of Education is an administrative body organized for the purpose of seeing that the Bur- lington City schools are run efficiently. The Board is a vital part of our school program for it deter- mines the necessity of repairs and additional facili- ties, and regulates the financial affairs. The senior class, realizing the importance of a smoothly run school system for a good education, extends its appreciation to the Board members for the fine job they have consistently done. Oun, 4cCmc tc4tn Uon Success to you, the Class of 1959, as you focus your television cameras on the drama of life today. May you cherish your heritage as you look to the past and live worthy of our noblest traditions. Each generation challenges the best in its youth. Your high school education has broadened your horizon of service. Focus your attention on the needs of mankind. May you play your part well! JOSEPH W. HOWE Superintendent of Schools It has been said that the best thing the schools can do is to try to teach the oncoming generation that an honest citizen who thinks for himself is worth a dozen equally honest citizens who let others do their thinking for them. We wish you every success as you set out to prove that you have learned the lesson well. WALTER D. Oun, 'Detecto Each year as the seniors graduate, there is a note of sadness on your part as well as mine be- cause of the memories of the wonderful experi- ences that your class has left behind. You have seen the development of many won- derful and unbelievable inventions during your short life on this world such as television, jets, rockets, and satellites. You should be always look- ing to the future and preparing yourself to take an active part in the advancement of our great nation's way of life. ROBERT F. DOTTI Principal STANDING: Alice Maier. This section ends our presentation of those people in our school who have stood behind us and supported us. The board, administration, and principal have been as our producers and directors. The faculty have been our coaches in all that we have done the past four years. And we cannot fail to give credit to the maintenance men and women, cafeteria workers, and secretaries. They have been the quiet, unobtrusive ones who have worked backstage to help us in many ways. Thank you for four wonderful years. 15 One of the most important projects that the senior class undertakes each year is the planning, preparation, and production of its yearbook. This is accomplished by first having the 'Heirloom staff select the theme that best illustrates their four years in B.S.H.S. Then, our sales campaign is planned and conducted. In the meantime, however, sketches are being drawn by the art committee, written material is being prepared by the literary committees, and layouts are being selected by the Heirloom staff. It is at this point that the development of the yearbook ceases to be the project of just a chosen few and becomes the project of the entire senior class. As time progresses, the yearbook takes on shape, much to the credit of our advisors, and finally is sent to the publisher. Here, at last, are the combined efforts of the Class of '59 —the 1959 HEIRLOOM. COMMITTEE HEADS TOP ROW: Walter Poole, Mark Bowen, David Kingston, Theodore Stellwag, Robert Ghaul, Cornelius Hogan. Al visited us through the A.F.S. program and lived with the Landrys. He accumulated many friends during his stay for he mixed well with all types of people. His hobbies and interests included music, philosophy, tennis, debating, literature, and many other things. Albert hopes to study philosophy and literature in a university in Italy. We are sure that with his determination and ambition, he will succeed in whatever he undertakes. We, the class of 1959, feel very fortunate in having had the opportunity to work with Albert Chiesa in our senior year. In memory of James Volpe whose death in July, 1957, caused a shocking loss to the cast of our production. 43 Yes, senior member of the class of '59—This Is Your Life. You entered these walls four years ago as an apprehensive, lost, timid freshman. Can you tell me where the annex is? I don't remember my homeroom number, are all familiar, as is the voice of Mr. Dotti over the public address sys- tem. The president for your first important year was Gary Buser; vice president, Sam Lippincott; secretary, Elizabeth Migliaccio; and treasurer, Edward Evans. Remember how the flood in late sum- mer-right before school opened—caused your Freshman Party to be held at the Lawrence School because the gymnasium had been under water? Oh, yes, there was also the gym ex- hibition in which you took part. It was your first performance of some of the skills. Shortly after exams the page of the script of your first year in high school was turned and a new one opened. Yes, you became a sophomore. Yes, senior, this was your sophomore year. At the beginning of your sopho- more year the junior high school was completed and you were once more the Underclassman. The officers were elected in the fall. Joseph Conda proved to be a good president, and helping him was Ernest Ferri who was the vice president. Edward Evans seemed to have his books always in order, for he was the treasurer; last but not least was Fernanda lovine, who was the secre- tary. In November of '56 your class had a wonderful Sopho- more Ball—thought by all to be a success. The theme was Winter Fantasy. And so, this is the end of your second year in Burling- ton High School. You still have two more.exciting years to go. The junior year! Halfway through high school, and suddenly the months seem to fly away. For the first time you presented a class play which added spice to this phase of your life. There were parties galore! The Junior-Senior Party was given a Mardi Gras touch, and the prom you gave the seniors was simply out of this world. In fact, it was under water. Lost Atlantis, remember? You were one of the several sports en- thusiasts who starred in the semi-annual gym exhibition. It was really a big show which everyone enjoyed thoroughly. From the kaleidoscope of the year, certain people and events will remain memorable. In your third act of high school life you elected Samuel Lippincott as president, with Con Hogan as vice president. Phyllis Nicolai played the role of secretary while Robert Ghaul took the title of treasurer. One more act to present before you will be starring in your own adult role. .......And on a shiny day of September, your senior year began. New teachers, new students, new books, a new exchange stu- dent—but basically the same atmosphere. The first valuable thing was your terrific Hillbilly Wedding, the senior play of this year. Do you remember? She looks as if she hasn't taken a bath for a month. Hain't niver tuck one. Then we had our Junior-Senior Party with the tremendous Golden Autumn decorations. The Tuesday before Christmas a great ball ... In January, the Rotary Club sponsored the International Ball with stu- dents from everywhere in the world. The class officers were elected. Dave Kingston was presi- dent, with Con Hogan assisting him as vice president. Mark Bowen was treasurer, and Mary Ann Spiewak was secretary. Finally your Senior Prom, then immediately afterward, 'your graduation. Yes, senior. This Was Your Life. This was your senior year—neither better nor worse than any other, but just a wonderful one. NANCY YANNARELLA relinquishes her love of a boy named Bob to Chris Painter. CRAIG YATES wills his favorite saying, Your what hurts? to Jack Martin. CLAUDINE YOUNG leaves her shortness to Lola Marshall. FRANCIS ZAKSEWSKI donates his foul shooting ability to George Bowley. 57 Ann Nelson invites a movie company to make some location shots for a picture without the permission of her father, Albert Nelson, who is acting principal of the high school. When the movie company arrives, they cause a near riot in the school and Andrew V. Craig, head of the Board of Education, threatens Albert Nelson with the loss of iis job if the school does not return to normal. Ann tries to get into pictures with Sparky Regan, the teen-age idol. She is a selfish girl until she realizes what her grandmother meant by a June Dawn. She grows up and learns to think of others early just as the sun rises early in June. Ann thinks as a young woman, no longer of herself, but for her friends and family. Betsy Craig, Mr. Craig's shy daughter, through Ann's efforts and unselfishness, is able to get a part in a screen test and is offered a contract. All ended well in spite of the many near catastrophes. This delightful three-act comedy by Dorthy Evans and John Ware was a great success through the hard work, patience, and help given us by our director, Mr. Lowry Welch. We, the class of 59 would like to extend our sincere appreciation for all that he has done. No, Ann! Put more feeling into it! Get on your knees. You're so naive, Fathaw! This is a chinstrap! That's great! 59 Paw, what are we goin' to do? ' ZciMtOy WetUU f ff by Le Roma Grith Settlor In our senior year our seasoned actors put on a comedy spectacular, Hillbilly Wed- din'. It was a hilarious comedy evolving about a typically lazy hillbilly family from the backwoods country. Being an unusually lazy cuss, Paw Belsnickle wasn't very happy when Maw said, Ya gotta git husbands for Ceelie an' Bonnie Mae, Paw! The in- cidents that followed made up one of the funniest plays ever performed at the B.S.H.S. studio. Paw Belsnickle, in his half-baked manner went about acquiring these husbands by trying to force Chiz Upschlager, a neighbor boy, and Massimo Roman, a stranger caught in a web of circumstances, into marriage at the point of a shotgun. A hot feud between the male cousins of the Belsnickles and the Upschlagers soon followed, rag- ing on and off stage. Confusion reigned and in the turmoil Juney Lou was apparently bitten by a rattlesnake, Ceelie got the first bath of her life, one of the little sisters got a load of buckshot during the feud, and Bonnie May ended up falling in love with Massimo. Things settled down a little and as the smoke cleared on a touching wedding cere- mony everyone was much surprised to see that Ceelie was marrying Obeey Upschla- ger, one of those loveable hillbilly boys. But there were no complaints because Paw had successfully accomplished his mission. We, the class of '59 extend our sincere thanks to Mr. Bocher for his patience with us and for the extensive time he put in to make our play a success. Stop the weddin'! What in tarnation do ya think yer doin'? Paw Belsnickle -........................ Ted Stellwag Maw Belsnickle ............................................. To be eligible for membership, the grades of a candidate, when weighed as to value and credits, must average a 3 or better. The candidates must possess the highest qualities of character, leadership, and service as witnessed by the faculty who rate each candidate in the three fields. The final decision as to elected members rests with a faculty committee. Our local chapter tries to promote interest in the Honor Society, and carries out several worthwhile service projects for the school such as ranking the homerooms scholastically at the end of each-marking period. Election to it is a distinctive honor. 62 CO -o STANDING: Robert Clair, John Weil.
