. URUNGTo !ch school High School emor J erje — n FOREWORD Sunny skies--perilous storms; breath-taking sunsets-- foreboding clouds; warm balmy breezes--sharp howlingwinds; placid rippling waters—turbulent angry seas. These conditions did we encounter on our four-year cruise. Fortunately, when the going was rough, our faith was restored by the soft silver lining which followed every rainbow. Naturally we inexperienced sailors of 1954 have become first class seamen, ready for graduation. Exploring the realms of mathematics, foreign languages, science, English, and his- tory, we have gained wisdom and have learned to think inde- pendently. Since we have met all kinds of people on deck and have made lasting friends, certainly our personalities have been developed and our lives have been enriched. The officers of our ship, our loyal, friendly teachers, have played a note- worthy part in guiding us safely into harbor. It is with happi- ness mingled with sadness that we herewith record our ex- periences in our ship’s log, the Heirloom. This is a book designed for the future. It will grow in value with the years, for there will come a time when we will turn nostalgically the pages which remind us of happy days. This is a history of a part of your life-a joyful part, which the Heir- loom, in years to come, will help you to relive. If the Heirloom can help to soften the break of friendships, to keep alive the love which we have in our heart for our school and the many things it represents, to remember kindly our dedicated teachers and the beloved admiral of the fleet Mr. Dotti, to brighten the faded memories of joyous times, its purpose will have been fulfilled. Wr. W Wr,. JtarM St LtLS0ZK DEDICATION Although it as very unusual to have a husband-wife team on the faculty, it is even more unique to have a couple who are so highly regarded by the stu- dents. Their genuine heartfelt interest in young people has increased our sin- cere affection for them. Because of their enthusiastic leadership and untiring efforts, our junior play was a record success and our junior prom an unforgettable event. Pa- tiently guiding us in our everyday activities, they have given unselfishly of their time and energy and have thus been an example to us that hard work and determination pay off. Their cheerful encouragement and sympathetic under- standing of our many problems and needs have endeared them to us and have propelled us on to attain the highest ideals and goals in life. As we glide into port, thus ending our four-year cruise, we dedicate the Heirloom of 1958 to you, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Stinson, two true friends whom we shall never forget. Arthur J. Cooper Secretary Dr. Joseph E. Fidanza President Frederick H„ Forman Vice-President Mrs. Cornelius D. Hogan Milton Rosenberg BOARD OF EDUCATION George R. Tyler ADMINISTRATION Superintendent Congratulations upon grad- uation from high school! Throughout the years of prep- aration you have given your best to your studies and your school activities. Look with confidence to the future. Our community, state, and nation needs men and women of vis- ion, dedication, courage, and ability. Many of you plan to con- tinue your education beyond high school. As you enter bus- iness, industry, or the profes- sions. may you chart another straight course for your next cruise in life. Good luck and may God bless you all! JOSEPH W. HOWE Superintendent of Schools Administrative Assistant The knowledge you have ac- quired during your years in school is a valuable asset. It is the profit on your invest- ment of time and energy. You can realize an even greater profit on your investment if you will prove that the knowledge is supported by intelligence, ambition, and initiative. It won’t do you, or anyone else, much good if you don’t put it to work. Our best wishes go with you as you go forth to prove you have something of value to offer. WALTER D. WITHKA Administrative Assistant It is with regret that I see the class of 1958 depart on their cruise through life. You have been well prepared to meet the storms you will encounter. Remember that initiative and the desire to achieve are two strong oars on the boat you row. Your teachers and parents have been lighthouses to guide you in the channels of youth. Now you will be on your own on the sea of life. Be strong, think before you act; then act in the light of what is right, and you will succeed. ROBERT F. A 13 THE STEERING WHEELS OF 1958 Developing the Heirloom was one of the more pleasant responsibilities of our senior class. The Heirloom staff began this important task by selecting a theme which in their opinion could best illustrate the story of our class. The faculty advisers, editors, committee chairmen, and committee members worked to- gether daily in their attempt to make nur year- book a great success. Patience and determina- tion were required to accomplish this goal. Our labors came to an end, and our finished project emerged - the 1958 Heirloom. Her pleasant personality and cheerfulness have made her a memorable part of our senior year. Anne Guri was very active in school life and was well-liked by everyone. She followed the college preparatory course, particularly enjoying Spanish. She worked in the Snack Shack and had a very big part in the senior play. Anne-Guri’s visit to BSHS was made possible by the American Field Service, whose goal of world peace and understanding was furthered by her visit to the United States. Anne-Guri’s home is in Elverum, a small town in the southern part of Norway. Her Norwegian family consists of her parents, and a younger brother and sister. Her father is employed by the government. (During her stay here, Anne-Guri’s American parents were Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Schorr of Burlington.) Enjoying all phases of school life and extra-curricular activities, she liked the study of languages and is able to speak five different tongues. Upon graduation from her high school, Anne-Guri plans to attend Oslo University and become a translator. Her visit to BSHS has made us realize that world friendship can be and must be at- tained. 16 HOWARD LEWIS ADAMS College Prep. Edgcwater Park “Howard” “You're tell in’me!”... Dave, I - I’m scared still 1 “No, you mustn’t do that! You’ll lall asleep ii you sit down.” “TERROR AT BLACK OAKS Rusty Gates and Hank West, after seeking shelter from a blinding snow-storm, spent the most terrifying night of their lives at Black Oaks. Willie, a nit-wit who was living at Black Oaks, captured Hank who was examining the house. Elvira, the housekeeper, released Hank from Willie’s grip. Minutes later, relatives be- gan arriving at Black Oaks for the reading of Uncle Algernon’s will. The first to arrive were Bonnie and Flo, followed by Cousin Mildred, Aunt Clarissa, Kate, and Julie. Aunt Clarissa was murdered and the finger of suspicion was pointed at Cousin Ted, an escaped convict. Rusty’s ingenious detective work solved the crime. The murderer was Mildred’s secret husband Dave who was interested in the family jewels. After Radford, the lawyer, read the will to the family. Rusty and Hank left Black Oaks with Bonnie, to whom Rusty had proposed. This climaxed the exciting play, and the curtain closed on the seniors who had per- formed in their last B.S.H.S. play. “TERROR AT BLACK OAKS” CAST OF CHARACTERS Willie Rusty Gates Hank West Bonnie Blakely Elvira Flo Turner Mildred Blakely Emerald Kemble Edward Kowalski Thomas Shannon Nancy Stanton Nancy Stuart Judith Martin Scott Radford Kate Blakely Julie Blakely Dave Edwards Clarissa Blakely . . . . The classes which perform a service for the school include band, orchestra, and chorus. They play an important part in the cultural and entertainment areas of our school program. The chorus sings in different schools and ser- vice clubs in our locality in addition to pre- senting programs to the students. The band plays at football games, assemblies, and in pa- rades and presents several concerts, while the orchestra lends its talents during plays and con- certs and combines with the chorus in the an- nual “Night of Music”. Included in the service division of clubs are Stage Crew, Movie Operators, and Library Council. The Stage Crew aids in the production of scenery and various other props used in class plays and assemblies. The Movie Operators help care for the visual aids equipment. The showing of all movies is made possible through the work of these students. The Library Council assists in the distribution and arrangement of books and magazines in the library. The school newspaper, “The Arrowhead”, is in the hands of the Press Club members ile all programs, tickets and similar school publications are prepared by the Printing Club. Last but not least in this category is the Shop Club, which keeps the shop in good working order. The second group, the educational clubs, in- clude the career clubs, which are Future Home- makers of America, Future Teachers of Amer- ica, and Future Business Leaders of America. The activities of these clubs are practically self-explanatory. Also under this division is the Teen-age Book Club. This newly formed club was estab- lished to create a greater interest in reading. Other educational groups are the Chemistry, Math, Spanish and Biology Clubs which give their members opportunities for advanced work in these fields. The Typing Club was formed for the sole purpose of giving college preparatory students a chance to learn the basic principles of typing. The Leaders Club gives the girls an oppor- tunity for advanced work in gymnastics and further knowledge of different girls’ sports and their rules. The activity program includes many di- verse and interesting areas and affords innum- erable benefits to the participating students. Edward Mikulski FOOTBALL With a new coaching staff and plenty of material, the Burlington Senior High School “Blue Devils” compiled an impressive record of five wins, two losses and two ties. In the opening game of the season, Burlington retained the Little Brown Jug by defeating Bristol. The next three contests were con- fined to the South Central Jersey League, the Burls defeating Mt. Holly and Ewing Township, but losing a very hard-fought contest to Moores- town, 6-0. The Glassboro and Woodrow Wilson tilts ended in ties. The Burls scored an upset victory over Camden but lost to an inspired Riverside team. As was predicted, the Blue Devils stopped Palmyra on Thanksgiving Day. Though the season is over, the names of Mikulski, Jankowski, Johnson, McGinley, Parrish, Hutton, Barrett, Perkins, James, and Diggs will long be remembered for their excellent playin J m Phillip Parrish Gary Jankowski Ernest Ferri and John Lukis Alvin Johnson Michael James Robert McGinley Burls. FOOTBALL The Burlington J. V. eleven compiled a suc- cessful 5-1 record under the direction of As- sistant Coach Douglas MacLachlan. The twenty-five game winning streak that the J. V.’s compiled over the past three years was broken by a strong Mt. Holly squad, who defeated us by a score of 7-6. Our team defeated Trenton, Ewing Township, Glassboro, B. M. BASKETBALL The 1957-1958 varsity basketball team had a rather unsuccessful season. Due to the gradua- tion of some of our outstanding players our squad was depleted. This was a rebuilding year for the Burls. The team, coached by William Burr and led by juniors, Daniel Duffy, Francis Zaksewski, and James Morrissey, will, we hope, have the necessary experience and basketball knowledge next year to become a winning com- bination. Although the Burls only won two games, Michael Podroza Glenn Boykin both South-Central Jersey League contests, their spirit was never daunted till the final buzzer sounded. The junior varsity, coached by Douglas MacLachlan, had a fair year, winning seven games, while losing nine. Theodore Diggs, Louis Montagno, and George Bowley were the main point getters. These boys, with their hustling teammates will most likely fit into the varsity picture next year. A spirited team, under the direction of Coach Raymond Costello, fin- ished second in the South Central Jersey League with a record of six wins and three losses and an over-all record of seven and seven. After losing the first games to B. M. I., 6-2, and Woodrow Wilson, 10-2, the team bounced back to win four straight. One of the most ex- citing games was against Trenton Catholic which was won by a home run in the last inning, making the final score 6-5. Players from the Class of ’58 were Richard Dallmann, Maurice Jones, Allan Webb, Scott Warren, and Michael Podroza. Maurice Jones slides into home plate as Allan Webb puts the tag on him. HOCKEY In the brisk fall months, field hockey is the first sport scheduled for class and extra-cur- ricular activities. Arrangement of the players and their positions, rules of the game, and other necessary skills of the game are first demon- strated in-doors before attempting to play a good game on the prepared field. Every girl must be alert at all times and ready to move forward, using every possible guard against the opposing player. Teamwork is necessary throughout the entire game. The girls organize their own teams and hope to be a winning combination. After the teams are selected, they are scheduled to play one another in order to show which is the most skillful. In this manner, the champion teams establish themselves, and the less skillful play- ers are eliminated. The victorious team of BSHS plays St. Mary’s Hall in a traditional basketball game which cli- maxes the season. And this year, for the first time, a game was also scheduled with Palmyra. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL GIRLS’ SOFTBALL When spring rolls around, the interest of the boys and girls turns to softball. The girls are instructed in softball skills as a regular part of the after-school sports curriculum. It is another of the up-and-coming sports in which the girls participate. Although the girls do not compete against out-of-town schools, they have fun choos- ing teams and playing against each other. The girls who are interested in improving their athletic ability and skill belong to this organization which func- tions after school hours. Hockey, volleyball, basketball, softball, and archery are some of the sports which are of- fered. Under the direction of Miss Snyder and Miss Fine, the girls learn the skills, rules, and a general knowledge of the sports in which they participate. The girls take part in state archery and bowling tournaments. The winners are se- lected from all New Jersey schools under the State Charter of the G.A.A. Other enjoyable and educational events in which they participate are swimming and basketball play-days which are held at such colleges as Temple University and Trenton State Teachers College. Swimming parties, bowling parties, and the annual banquet at which awards are presented are other functions of the G.A.A. that help to round out the school year. G. A. A.
