We hear many pleasant chords, but the few sour ones add spice and inspire us to do better in the next movement. We must not pause to reminisce too long, for time goes swiftly by and we will be left behind. So we must look ahead and anticipate the best in life so that we may be prepared to use the knowledge we have gained from previous mistakes. She is here under the auspices of the American Field Service. The A. F.S. contributes toward its goal of world peace by exchanging European and American students. Marja-Liisa is from Lahti in the southern part of Finland. Her family consists of a younger sister, her mother and father who is in the Construction bus- mess Marja Liisa enjoys dancing basketball games skiing and all other good times with other young people We are glad to be hosts to Marja Liisa this year and very sincerely wish her a successful and happy future Gettmg To Know You HISTORY It was in the year 1953 that we began to create our musical composition. Our life may be compared somewhat to that of a composer who is striving for the creation of a masterpiece. In our grammar school days we developed the basic chords upon which our masterpiece, our success in life, would be based. We entered high school hoping to develop melodies which would further improve and accentuate our composition so that we would derive the utmost satisfaction from it. In the composition of the overture, we had some low notes, sour notes, and high notes, all of which are needed for good harmony. We learn by trial and error, and it is important that we discard that which is useless and retain that which is beneficial, desirous, and pleasing. During the final movement of our masterpiece, we lost the freshmen to the new school, but we gained Marja-Llisa Toivanen, a very charming exchange student from Finland. Other exchange students who helped in the creation of our musical score were Paul Mueller, Baerbel Luedtka and Dierhim sf-hmmm l . , , , is 1A ...Q The 1956 Farm Fair Queen was one of the beautiful high notes we hit. Two performances we gave were Quiet Summer , our junior play, and My Little Margie , our senior play. They both received well deserved ovations from the large crowds. Other important movements were the proms and parties, which were all huge successes. We had three conductors during our composing career ---- Mr. Ax, Mr. Withka, and Mr. Dotti, We have now, after four years of work, completed our composition. But have we? Not actually, There is always something to be desired, something to be improved. We have the ability to bring these desires into reality. It is important for us to play our masterpiece wellg for, since we have the tools and foundations, we must use them to our best advantage. We must play our basic notes as they were meant to be played. So now, all that is left for us to do is to go out into the world which is ours and play each movement beautifully, so that the entire score will thrill and delight our audiences. The summer, however, didn't turn out to be quiet for Mr. James Clark, an attorney and candidate for the country club presidency. His home was literally invaded byateenage niece and nephew, Pamela and Sonny Young, who took over his campaign. Needless to say, their participation resulted in mass confusion. The audience's applause proved that the hard work put forth by the cast and behind-the- scene workers, under the verycapable direc- tion of Mr. Lowry Welch, was indeed appre- fiated. Wh 0 U in .gl One of the most important creations developed bythe Senior Class is the HEIRLOOM, lt begins on a serious note with the selection of a theme. After gathering and discarding a number of ideas from many contributors, we finally decided to tell our story in music, the universal language' as Longfellow de- scribed it. Now that we had selected our main theme or melody we were ready to begin the task of adding the harmony and color tones. The various committee chairmen incorporated the use of all volunteers who worked together to record our memories. This is the result of our labors blended together into one masterpiece that ends on a joyous note. It is our sincere wish that this will bring pleasure to our audience, 1957 Heirloom Staff COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN lLeft to rightj Top Row - Marie Diaczynsky, George Price, Robert Mead, Mary Jane Bartlett, Elaine Howe, Jean Burt, Sandra Robert- son, Dolores Garcia, Margaret Eppler. Although the size of the band was not as large as other years, they have received many comments on the excel- lence of tone and the skill and ability of the members. CHQRUS ui iv s 5' , . gk The Burlington Senior High School Chorus, under the direction of Mr. William Mahan, met every day this year. They spent several months preparing for their busy Christmas schedule. They not only presented programs in school, but were called on by many organiza- tions in the city to give Christmas programs. The biggest task was to prepare for the concert in the spring with the orchestra. During the year our chorus exchanged programs with neighboring schools. Any member of good standing in the chorus is eligible to try out for the New Jersey All State Chorus. FT. . Another new organization this year is the Future Teachers Club. lt is acharter member of the Future Teachers of America. The aim of the F,T.A. is to enlighten the students about the profession of a teacher. The program consists of: reports on col- leges in the area which offer courses in teachingg field trips to colleges, observation of classrooms and teachers in and around Burlington. Mrs. Taylor, the club adviser, has con- tributed much in the way of helping the stu- dents examihe their qualifications for enter- ing the field. E isis' 2' 5 Library Council The Library Council is a service organ- ization whose purpose is to help take care of the many details that make a library most effective. Among their many tasks are filing, shelving, stamping, writing notices, checking magazines and books in and outofthe library, planning bulletin board displays, and prepar- ing new books for the library users. They are the behind-the-scene people, under the leadership of Miss Maier, who enable the user of the library to find what he wants with ease and speed. W 'ssl H Sk, 7 1' Press Debating The main purpose of the Press Club is to gather and write the news and features for the Arrowhead, which is published once a month in the BURLINGTON PRESS. It gives the students a chance to develop their ability to write and is good experience for those continuing in this field. Under the direction of Miss Learn, there were twenty-eight students writing for the Arrowhead Also, Marja-l.iisa Toivanen, our exchange student, contributed several articles. The Debating Club was organized this year by Mr. John Maher. lt consisted of a group of students who desired to develop the ability to speak publicly on questions of the day. Debates on a variety of topics were held regularly one day each week while the other club days were given over to the pre- paration of the next weeks topics and listen- ing to tape recordings of previous meetings to enable the members to improve their discussions. Student Banking Movie Operators The Banking Club helps students to save and bank their money during school hours twice a week. Supervised by Mrs. Dangler, the ICH members learned to check in money by using an electric adding machine, post and alphabetize deposit slips, check individ- ual accounts, reconcile bank statements, make entries, write bank books, and file individual accounts. The club is affiliated with the Burlington Bank and TrustCompany. Banking is a valuable service to the students. Much preparation and training goes into the showing of every movie shown in B.S.H, S. The purpose and functions of the Movie Operators Club, under the direction of Mr. Hollinger, are maintaining and operating the school's audio-visualequipment,coupled with the training and supervision ofa competent staff of club members for efficient operation of the A-V Program. They not only operate the machines, but they are responsible for the repair and maintenance of machines, as well as receiving, scheduling, and returning all audio-visual material requisitioned by the faculty to supplement their classes. J, -J' Traffic Driver Commission The purpose of the Traffic Commission, which is sponsored by Miss Williams, is to help keep students moving in an orderly fashion. In doing this they try to speed up traffic and to keep noise and congestion ata minimum. The Auditorium Guards aid in assemblies by ushering the homerooms into the auditor- ium as quickly and quietly as possible. All problems are brought up and taken care of at their regular weekly meetings. They are a great asset to the school. Training Driver Training was organized to enable more students to have the opporttmity of re- ceiving driving instructions. The club is composed of approximately twenty-five boys and girls, under the instruction of Mr. Al- bano, the Driver Education teacher. It was for those who didn't have a chance to sign up for Driver Training during regular per- iods. Four students are given the opportunity to take the training every six weeks, while the remaining students await their turn. .if S Stage Crew The Stage Crew is organized for the pur- pose of handling all the back-stage duties necessary in producing our class plays and assembly programs. Mr. Lowry Welch, ad- visor to the club, organized it several years ago. Long before the curtain goes up, stage crew members are busy at work. This year, because of the different interests ofour many members, the clubis dividedinto four groups. Girls predominate in the make-up and art sections, while most of the work in the scen- ery and lighting fields is done by boys. Photograph The Photography Club is one of the new clubs formed in our school. The membership is limited because of the fact that our dark- room is not large enough to accommodate many persons at one time. The members need not have extensive knowledge of photography since the purpose of the club is to teach the basic techniques and general operation of the equipment. Learning to take, develop, and print well-planned pictures has been the main objective this year. ware ' Sochd.LAving Social Living is an informal group of students, under the supervision of Mrs. Harb- ison, who desire to become acquainted with the modern code of courtesy and manners. Skill, rules, and a general knowledge of playing hockey are learned by the girls. Teams are not organized, but the girls usually practice the different skills in groups and end their day with at least one game. Substitutions are made during the game, so that each girl has a chance to participate and utilize the skills and rules she has learned. ' RCHERY Under the competent guidance of Miss Snyder, archery is growing fast in popular- ity. lt is on its way to becominga coed sport. Archery is a very precise sport- one that requires a great amount of knowledge about the correct stance, aim and handling of the bow and arrow. To assure a perfect aim, the bow and arrow must be held in a certain position, and the aim must be in accordance with the distance of the target from the sharpshooter . This requires much prac- tice, and the students take advantage of the time allotted to them. Rules concerningwhen to shoot and when to retrieve the arrows are made to assure safety. 'Just One More Chance' . 1 1- , 3 N i , - i AA The Girls' Athletic Association, or G,.fX,.iX,, is an organization consisting of girls who would like to improve their athletic ability and who wish to have enjoyable times participating in after school sports. Under the guidance and direction of Miss Snyder and Miss Fine this has been one of the most active years. Hockey, volleyball, basketball, softball, and archery are some of the sports which are offered. A swimming play-day in which the girls in and around Phila- delphia participated was very successful. The girls took part in a State Archery and Bowling Tournamentg the winners were decided from mailed-in results from schools in the state under the State Charter of the G.A.A. .-Xnother very enjoy- able and educational play-day for basketball was held at Temple University. Trenton State Teachers College offered a State play-day in which many B.S.H.S. girls played basketball. A bowling party, a swimming party, and the annual banquet at which awards were presented and next year's officers were introduced helped to round out the year. life-'A-'L' TN Q by M M ' 'W l X S- L.
