So ours on the tenth of Septemher 1924 entered lfurther School with tres legions, armed with pens, pencils, and hooks. Owino' to our extreme youth and uneducated state of minds, we were 6 an unassuming and industrious grade. XYhat, with skirmishes with lessons, teachers and harharous warlike Sophomores, our time was well occupied. Then June set in, and we were ordered home for the summer by 1Y. D. TWH NTY- N l N12 The DOE-WAH-JACK Nevertheless, pleasures were not wholly refrained from. At a Hal- lowe'en Festival in October practically all students of Further School dis- porterl themselves with much fun and merriment. Moreover, ours gave a banquet for the Seniores, which rivalled any of heretofore in splendor and jollity. Ours had a Herce skirmish with the Senioribus over the silver loving cup, which was bestowed by the Kiwanis Club to the class which should excel in athletics. It was a close and hard-fought battle, but our men were routed and put to flight. Then on the Kalends of june ours were allowed to assist the Seniores in their graduation. After having had four credits bestowed on them, they were rejoiced to he ordered into camp for the summer. LIBER QUINTUS Conquests of Ours, as Seniores. 1927-1928. After having' despoiled Further School of much learning, ours now con- spired to he victorious in every held. XVith sixty-nine soldiers it was felt that this would not be very diliticult, for some were talented in quickness of brain. some in different athletic sports, some in music, and some in leader- ship. Early in the year all of ou1's had been called together in council. At this council Leon jones was elected praesidentum, Mary Joyce Brooks, John Vernon and 'Walter Sharp, tribuni under him. They made themselves a purple and gold standard on which was engraved BU and B-Yf with a violet to signify their modesty. Thereafter many councils were held by all of ours and many projects discussed and carried out. Ours were much honored at a banquet which the .luniores prepared for them. Ours selected and presented successfully for public approval a most excellent drama, known as the Senior Play, Also, after much trouble and anxiety ours knew the joy and triumph of creating and publishing a year book called MIDOE-XVAII-AiACK.H As ours realized how much our mothers had contributed to our education, ours dedicated said book to them. The Recruits started their training with Miss VVeb- ster, Miss Holton, Mr. Rhodes, and Mr. McBain as Generals. They elected as their Colonel, Carlos Pennington: their Lieutenant-Colonel, John W'l1itleyg and their Major, Helen Fowler. During this period the recruits were drilled in the fundamentals of learning and athletics. The discipline proved to be too intense for some, and they fell out, giving up the attempt to conquer Latin, Algebra, English, Civics, and Science. For nine long months they trained for this Crusade. At the end of this time they were given a furlough of three monfhs. Those who survived returned from their furlough and were promoted to the rank of private. Their Generals this year were Miss XN'ebster, Miss McQuarie, Miss Carroll, Miss Shepard, Miss Kernodle, Mr. Qsborne, and Mr. Leonard. The privates elected as their Colonel, .lohn Whitley: as their Lieutenant-Colonel, Frank Holtg as Major, Harold Trollinger. Under these efficient leaders the privates accomplished much in the second year of High School. All the clubs in High School were beneficially influenced by the work of the privates. They were also very active in athletics. Many members won varsity letters and others made the varsity squads, The privates also ran a close third in the Inter-Class Athletic Contest. At the end of this training in scholarship, club work, and athletics, the privates were given another three months furlough. September 4, 1927 the privates returned so thoroughly experienced that they were immediately given a rating of Corporal in the Army of the Burlington High School. This year they had as their Generals Miss Shepard, Miss Kernodle, and Mr. Rhodes. The Corporals elected as their Colonel, Allen Mebaneg as Lieutenant-Colonel, Carlos Pennington: as Major, Erlwina Laws: and as Captain, Sam XVar1ick. NVith these leaders they have accomplished much in scholarship, club work, and athletics, The .lnnior Party was held on Halloween night, October 30, 1927. This proved to be ll very enjoyable event and helped to provide the funds for the junior-Senior Banquet, The next achievement of the Corporals was the Junior-Senior Banquet held March 9, 1028 at the Fisher Street School, In the opinion of the Corporals, this banquet was one oi the best ever held and every one seemed to enjoy the occasion. Many Corporals have received varsity letters, and they are planning to win the Inter-Class Cup. The Corporals had a very successful year and they are looking forward to their furlough of three months so that they may return next September to be fully com- missioned officers in the Army of the Burlington High School. After nine months had passed, the rough sea became cahn, and for three short months we traveled peacefully. On September 7, 1927, we again encountered a rough sea. Being a rank higher, we we1'e hetter prepared. lllisses Carroll and Scarborough were our engineers. Everyone in the junior and Senior Classes always looks forward to the great social event of the year, the banquet given hy the juniors in honor of the Seniors. The Juniors have always been good hosts, and this year they were at their best. They carried out the idea ol a leap-year party very successfully on Klarch 9, 1928, in the cafeteria of 'the Fisher Street School. The hall was beautifully decorated with purple and gold, the Senior colors, Yellow candles and vases of jonquils were used as table decorations. Palms and other potted plants were used in profusion. joseph tiant, -lr., served as toastmaster. W'hile the meal was served by the Sopho- more girls. very interesting toasts and responses were given. Excellent music was fur- nishd hy the ll. H, S. Orchestra and the Cvlee Clubs. Several dances were gracefully' executed by Xlargaret Boland. Sarah Elizabeth Yernon, Elizabeth Burke, a.nd Ethel Qualls. The Seniors were most appreciative of the hospitality extended them hy their graci- ous hosts and hostesses. l The zmioz' Party ln order to raise money for the ,lunior4Senior Banquet, the junior Class gave at Hallowe'en party this year. Of late this has become a custom. The junior Class gave the party in the Burlington High School Auditorium on the night of October 27, lU27. Twenty-Five cents admission was charged in return for which a play was given. The Ghost Story, as the play was called, proved to be 'very interesting and everybody enjoyed it. :Xfter the play all those present went to the several booths to get refreshments and to have their fortunes told. These booths were beautifully decorated with black and gold, the two colors of the night. At a late hour the crowd left smiling and happy. No one denied that they hadn'1 had a good time, and that those who were absent had missed some fun. Tfze Sefzior Hz'- Y Soda! The Hi-Y Club is declared the best organization in the school, because of its high ideals and Christian influence. lt is made up of the finest type of boys, for boys alone can belong to it. It has become a custom for this club each year to have a social and tn initiate the boys from the freshman class who make up the Junior Hi-Y Club, in order to show them they will receive a hearty welcome to the Senior Club the next term. This year the members of each club, with their best girl friends, gathered in the high school auditorium on March 16th, at eight o'clock. The president of the Senior I-li-Y, john Wfhitley, presided over the meeting, and welcomed the junior HifY to the social. A response was given by Robert Self, president of the junior Hi-Y. The girls were made to feel their welcome by a speech from Carlos Pennington. joseph Yarhorough explained the purpose and slogan of the Hi-Y, and Thomas NYhitley discussed the four C's. Mr. Halfacre gave a short ta-lk on the work of the Hi-Y. The meeting was turned over to Bliss Shepard, who sponsored the social hour. The hard fought contests and delightful games were very interesting to all. Everyone was given a small gift, as a souvenir. Following the social hour ice cream and cake were served. The social was a great success. and everyone expressed himself as having had an enjoyable evening. N I NETV-TVVO E l X fi , is -Ei, V7 M,g4 J K .-l ,gl-ff M - ' F gig.
