I'd always wanted to s e Tibet, and vhen I found mys lf in Lhasa, its capital, I was overgoved We found Bill Riclards with his pro basketball t capturing the Tibetan Pro Basketball Ch nnionshin, and won E ,OOO at th gambling casino operated by Gloria Allen, Ethe Houser Shirlev Duffy and Patty O'Brvan Traveling on to Mongolia, we found Ron Humphrey as editor of the largest newspaper in that country On arriving in Hong Kong, China, we found someone had robbed us of the s5,ooo, so we hired the citv's greates detective, Patty Duffy, who quickly retrieved it for us e next stor was Korea, where we caught Nadine Willard entertaining the troups with her new how HNadine Va itiesn IHLJ1 front row I noticed Mel Wiermerslag Mel always said he'd w nd ur there, but as Commander in chi f of the Armed Forces in the Far East We then caught a plane for Tokyo, and after landing we decided to roam the streets Upon tu ning a corn r L1TFf not ced an Aueric n taking nictures of the Chinese children Investigating fu the we VOUFG it as our old classmate, Philip Noble Chfter flunking ut of Vassar he decided to become a photogrloher Then Larry so a brains or Hwhv not tak a cruise through the Philippinesv' he asked WeU , wtf notf So we board d a moth a en boat and set sail You can guess what haDrenaL It sanl' We swam to sh re and were gre ted bf Dick Frost and his n tive helpers He out was a reed hut build r Dick flew us over to Borneo where he said we could catch a boat to the States In Borneo we found Stella Anderson as ecret ry to the famous Nwild Mann, and a little r her on, in Pago Pago, e saw Eugene Fitzgerald giving lectures on How to play Rugby' Our classmate, Emma Van Wierirven, was his booking agent I decided it was time we bought our own plane, so in Australia I forced Larry into giving me an allotment to do so After rurcha ing a beautiful little plane, I walked ar ourd town for a while and came up n a sign above a rather shady looking establishment It read HScrool for Backward Kangaroos Instructor Rosenarv Anderson and Burna Dean Friedrichs H Further down the street I saw another sign reading, 'Dancing Lessons 2 6 Ask for Chuck Sandell' And o we le t Australia and headed fo the sunshine and palm trees of Hawaii On the beach one afternoon we rar into Barbara Rohweder, who has taken to hula dancing Further un the beach we stepped on Larrv Lowe, who h d retired from his life as apineanole grower From Hawaii we went to the next extreme, Alaska Upon landing at Juneau my tooth be gan to hu t I hunted for a dentist, uno Just happened to be Pat Hanstad Her dental nurse was Ina Moody, and if I ever see them again it will be too soon Five teeth they pulled out of me' While recuperating, Larry and I relaxed at a place called Celeste's Corner Yes, our friend Celeste Smith owned the Joint Besides Lnocking out a tune on the piano, she did a nlftv Egyptian dance Xfter leaving Alaska we decided to go back to Burlington and see what was going on W walked into the office at BEHS and found Marvin Brady arguing with Ernie Bucnholz Ernie 1S the new principal and Marv has taken over Mr Gurney's Senior Refresher class we be San talking about old times and found out that quite a few grads of '53 were still around Ron Edson married Marilyn Eddie and is running the Roller Frolic Joyce Graff owns the Seven Cedarsn and has hired Don Young's band Joan Svoboda married Roger and has six beautiful children Bill Bitseff is happily married to Virginia Sego and runs the Mbbil Has Station by the stoplight Jean Cassidy owns the Lido in Mount Vernon, while Bob Lee 15 jailer at the countv Jail Ron Knutzen sells violets in front of Knutzen's Grocery to earn a living while Dale Jenkins, farmer, still goes over to Sedro Woolley to date Eunice Well, Larry and I had a wonderful time on our trip around the world, but this wasn't the end. When the circus moved over to Switzerland I went too. The show was a huge suc- :ess and so are the grads of '53, They are swell, everyone of them, and destined to make their mark in the world. As the straln of WCome to the Cir us, the Greatest Show on Earthn echoed and re echoeo throughout the crowd, I pushed my way through a mass of excited human1ty 1nto the most magnlflcent, most colo sal, most stupendous b1g top in the world' The nParsons, Boettcher and Rlckdall C1PCUS,n whlch I helped create, was openlng for the f1PSt t1me There was aCt1V1tV everywhere' Everythlng possible was be1ng done to make thlsllttle town of Bavar1a, Switzerland, wake up to the fact that withnn it's own cltv 11mitS was the one th1ng that old and young allke will always love, the circus, 1ndeed 'The Greatest Show on Earth W It was a br1ght spr1ng day, the flrst day I had seen Larry Rlckdall s1nce our le ving dear BEHS, and I must adm1t that after twenty years he had changed oulte a b1t He just walked 1nto my office that day, looked me straight 1n the eye and said, NTheron Davis you old son of a gun, I want you to take a trlparoundthe world with me to look for freaks N Parsons, Boettcher and I are organiz1ng a C1PCuS and f1nd ourselves wlthout any freaks W I exolalned that w1th Lester Parsons and Albert Boettcher he d1dn't need any freaks, but he offered to pay my way, and wlo am I to turn down a free tr1p around the world9 Anyway, we started out Larry's asslstants couldn't go w1th us because they were working overtime at the HK B C Breweryn, run by D1ana Kerr, Dlanne Bessner and Marlene Crumrine We boarded a plane bound for MSX1CO C1ty and were SUPpT1S8d to Plhd Grant Hodge as stewardess a very pretty one, too I and Rosalle F11Ck as pilot Well, we were always told that th1ngs were great 1n Denmark The tr1p was lonely In Mex1co C1ty I p1cked up a Mex1can basket for my w1fe fthe for mer Myrna Power, and sent postcards to each of our 13 chlldren Myrna always l1ked Home E After ICHVIHR MeX1CO we took off for Central Am8P1C8 and N1C3P3gU3 where a seven headed human was supposed to be found Ha' Instead of flndlng the freak, we were held up by Ione Dahl, who, t1red of be1ng a dltCh digper, had turned to a l1fe o lntrigue as a band1t As 1f th1s nasn't enough, when we ar1ved 1U Panama ve were robb d of our 11' s S8V1ngS by Wayne Carr, who sold us a used car What a wreck' But we managed to dr1ve lt down IHIO South Amerlca, where we found John Holt crushlng codee beans Wlth h1S bare feet, Spanky Peth running a dude ranch, and Phyllls Arn+zen and Marlene Chesley llV1hP w1th the We flnally sold our car C991 1n Buenos A1res and set sa1l for ApPlC3 Surelv there would be some freaks there After rentlng a small boat 1n Boma, at the mouth of the Congq we paddled up th1S m1ghty river unt1l we were deep 1n the Belglan Congo Stalk1ng through the deep jungle we came upon a m1SS1OH run by our old classmate G11 De Camp and hls w1fe Cather1ne Thomas Walk1ng through the v1llage we came upon the NCann1bal D1n1ng Ro mn, Tom Sm1t, Prop we sampled some of Tom's COOklHg, bade farewell to G11 and Cathy, borrow- ed the1r hellcopter and p1lot, and flew out of there fast Soon we were 1n Morocco D Cldlng to stay a wh1le, we sent the plane back, so we found ourselves wal1ng over the des rt Suddenly two women appeared and forced us 1nto buylng the1r hand made t1es We rec ognlzed them as Sharon Cox and BOUU18 Fl1Ck Stlll man huntlng, I guess From Casablanca we flew to Llverpool, England ur experlence in Afr1ca had been so tlrlng that we declded to spend the n1ght ther nd we wound up 1n a hotel run bv Loralne Streeter and Joan Sulllvan After StOpD1ng 1n London, we flew on to gay Paree It was Sprlng, and the llttle sldewalk cafes were crowded w1th many l1ght hearted people One place 1n partlcular caught our eye The Slgn above the door read 'Ye Olde Wine Shopren, Janet Yenter, Prop we were lnterested 1n seelng how Jan had done these past twenty years and went 1n to f1nd her enterta1n1ng three of our old fr1ends, Mary Jean Gardner,LeRov CO1 vin and Vlrglnla Thomas We found that LeRoy lS the propr1etor of a waD. known n1ghtSP0U: Gln 18 a struggl1ng artlst who does most of her work lh the back of Jan's shoppe, and be S1d6S belng G1n's brush carrler, Mary 15 presldent of the French N O B Before leavlng PBPIS we were E1V6W a car oy LeRoy and made our nay through Europe W arrived 1n Bern, Swltzerland, 1n t1me to see Mar1lyn Martin crowned HMISS Europeu, and had time for a mOV18 at one of Ron Yarber's famous theaters When we arrlved at the capital of Arabla we were greeted by 1tS f1rst woman presldent, Merri Lou Sheoler We had a won derful t1me V1S1flHg her and engoyed a boy of G9l1C1OUS chocolates made by Ralph Van Allen at hls f1ne establlshment, WGrandma's Sweet Shoppe ' O , , C P - Q 0 ' 1 I I .V .
