V Sites an Burges high school first opened ts doors to students in 7955, and 1as continued this sort of ieremonial event for many years. This year the school celebrates its 30th anniversary. The list of events during these thirty years is endless, from new fads to new l i scenes of B. HS. faces, and new faculty to new facilities. The library was added in 1980 and the journalism room in 1983. This year the students and faculty experienced a few distur- bances as the girls'gym went under construction in the summer. As for the students and faculty, there have been many changes in their styles and ways of life. There have been many new faces in the faculty, especially in recent years. This has created a new kind of spirit in Burges and with the new students every year, this spirit continues to grow.

Burgess High School named after William H. Burges, first open- ed its doors in 1955. Attending it were students from the seventh grade up to twelfth grade. When MacArthur and Ross were built, the seventh through ninth grades were eliminated leaving tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. Through the history of Burges, there has been three principals. From 1955 to 1968 Don L. Mitchell was the principal and the Assistant Principal was Virgil Welch. Clifford F. Schmidt then became principal from 1968 to 1970. From 1970 un- til now, Mr. Tom Chavez has been the princpal together with Mr. Crago, Mr. Silva, and Mrs. lorjorian as Assistant Principals. The semester system was in- troduced when the school first opened and is still being used. As for the grading system, it was the same then as it is now. In the beginning school attire was very strict. The boys had to wear belts and adhere to conventional hairstyles. No metal cleats were to be worn on the soles of shoes at all. Some of the teachers we have now were here when the school first opened. Mr. Russell taught mechanical drawing and was a trainer for the football team. Wesley Hradek taught, and still is teaching orchestra. Mr. Albert Gutierrez, now the Student Ac- tivities Director was then the ROTC instructor. 6 Thirty years of progress v. . n 'S' . :QM I " . 3 V
