Campaigning all over the nation
the candidates faces were known
to all the people. Much of the at-
tention for this year's election was
mainly centered around the
Democratic running-ma te
Geraldine Ferraro, who just hap-
pened to be the first woman to
ever run in any presidential
election.
During most of Mondale's and
Ferraro's political touring, Ferraro
usually overshadowed Walter
Mondale, while on the Republican
side Reagan and Bush received
their share of publicity. Not only
did women 's equality Hnally
reached one of the presidential
elections, but Ronald Reagan turn-
ed out to be the oldest candidate
to run for the presidential office,
at the age of 70. The platforms of
the candidates ranged from taxes
to the conflict of religion, which
dealt with the school prayers in
school.
When both political parties had
their conventions one could clear-
ly see that a great group of people
were out there supporting their
candidates.

Among those who thrilled and
chilled millions of Americans were
Vanessa VWlliams and Michael
jackson. Vanessa Williams, a 21-
year-old student at Syracuse was
crowned this past year as Miss
America, and was the first black
woman to do so. She carried the
crown, some said, better than
anyone in the tradition of the Miss
America pageant had ever done.
Her dream of being Miss America
was not fullilled for very long
because of a mistake in judge-
ment. Ms. Williams was asked to
resign as Miss America seven
weeks before the end of her reign
because of pictures to be publish-
ed in the August issue of 'Pen-
thouse. Despite her misfortune she
kept the support of most
Americans. She will appear in the
November and january issues of
Penthouse, a television series, and
is expected to release an album.
Among those in the top names
of the entertainment world
Michael jackson was placed in the
Guiness Book of World Records
for recording Thriller, an album
that sold over a million copies. This
past year he began a tour of
America and the world with his
Hve brothers. Michael jackson will
continue to thrill millions of people
for years to come.

For the first time in over half
a century, the summer OL YM-
PICS were held in the United
States. Colleges all over Califor-
nia offered their gyms,
stadiums, and fields for the
need of the Olympians.
America had the largest
number of medals by winning
774 medal total. America had
immense competition with
West Germany who had the
second largest medal count.
The United States might
ha ve had more competition if
Russia had not boycotted, with
the fear of the Gymnasts being
killed and the fear of them
defecting on their own will.
The opening and closing of the
games had spectacular visual
and Audio effects, yet the
Olympic games was said to be
filled with too much
propaganda.
