The girls' varsity cross-country team, despite their busy schedule, did very well throughout the season. They attended several invitationals which led up to the district championships. Throughout the months of September and October, they ran at the Bel Air, Riverside, Burges, Cor- onado, Alamogordo, and Mayfield in vitationals. Their final competition was at Cor- onado, which was the District champion- shkzs. There they were proclaimed district champions for the second consecutive year and qualified for the regional meet to be held in Lubbock, Texas. In Lubbock they finished in third place and qualified for state competition. State competition was held in Georgetown, Texas at Southwestern University. There they finish- ed seventh in the state. Coach Alsup is very proud of his girls and how they finish- ed overall in the season. The girls feel good about their season. Margaret Brooks had one thing to say about their season, "I am very satisfied with how we finished and I'm going to miss the thrill of competing against other runners. - - 1- .- -----.- This season practice started in the first week of August where the girls were runn- ing two to three miles a day. Then as weeks passed, they were running four to six miles finally towards the end of the season, they ran six to eight miles a day. Running is not the only kind of practice they had, they also had weight lifting every other day. In Cross-Country the team scores their points on a one to ten basis, where one is the best and ten is the worst. Mr. Alsup, the coach of the team said, "Despite the colds and injuries to some of the team- mates, the team did extremely well. Next yearl am hoping for an even better team." This year something new happened. The team had one of their meets here at school which was the first for them. The team is hoping that this will be a new tradi- tion. They placed third in district at Cor- onado High School. 1 we vpn...-e . .ASQ , . K 15,6 , g . ' . ' .f Q- i . Q, L ' ' ' - R' " . 7 . 1' ff .5 ' "' ' A 1 . Q A :Qi A - :::::: zz: ...I ,.k. .
