Prior to being this year's golf coach, Mr.
Birkhead had coached at Coronado for 7
year and at Austin for 2 years. When asked
how he felt about the school, he respond-
ed, 'tlt's great! " -
There were 77 golf members includng
four girls. Among them were seven return-
ing lettermen. The most valuable players
on the team were Sam Castillo, Eric Nelson,
and Mike Plymell.
To prepare for the meets the team prac-
ticed from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday thru
Friday at the Cielo Vista Golf Course and
Ascarate Park. There were a total of 72
tournaments which consisted of six boys
and six girls.
Although it was to early to foretell how
they would place overall Coach Birkhead
predicted the team would do fair, if not

The varsity basketball season started in
November with several pre-district games
and tournaments. The team practiced from
2:30 until 5:30 everyday and on Saturdays.
Their coach Tony Harper completed his
76th season of basketball. This year's team
was the smallest he 's ever had. There were
seven seniors, four of those returning let-
termen, two juniors, and one sophomore.
Coach Harper felt that "the outlook on the
season was to be competitive in all the
games. " The team had strengths and
weaknesses such as their defense and

against non-district teams and attended dif-
ferent tournaments. One particular tourna-
ment they attended was at Bel Air known as
the Big Red Tournament. There the boys
came in first place. District started in
December with a district opener against
Bowie. They finished off the season with a
game against Irvin. Players felt good overall
about their season. One even felt "we
should have been higher, but we lost too
many games we should ha ve won, " said
Manny Reynoso. Another felt, "the games
we had away were too many and there
were not enough people supporting us, "
commented Richard De La Cruz.
