Burgess High School named
after William H. Burges, first open-
ed its doors in 1955. Attending it
were students from the seventh
grade up to twelfth grade. When
MacArthur and Ross were built,
the seventh through ninth grades
were eliminated leaving tenth,
eleventh, and twelfth grades.
Through the history of Burges,
there has been three principals.
From 1955 to 1968 Don L. Mitchell
was the principal and the Assistant
Principal was Virgil Welch. Clifford
F. Schmidt then became principal
from 1968 to 1970. From 1970 un-
til now, Mr. Tom Chavez has
been the princpal together with
Mr. Crago, Mr. Silva, and Mrs.
lorjorian as Assistant Principals.
The semester system was in-
troduced when the school first
opened and is still being used. As
for the grading system, it was the
same then as it is now. In the
beginning school attire was very
strict. The boys had to wear belts

A group of proud winners
Starting off the school year can
really be a tremendous job for the
Yearbook Staff. Especially when
they walked into the journalism
classroom, knowing all the work
that was ahead of them.
The 84-85 Hoofbeats staff con-
sisting of 75 members, I which was
smaller than last year's staffj,
started working on the yearbook
in the month of August. This
Sammy Tinajero, with Lily Tovar
and Rosa Ortega as Assistant
Editors. Kathy Salem, Diana
Ruybe, Martin Castaneda, David
Lardizabal, Mary Lou Hernandez,
Mark Waltman, Bill Munnich, Liza
Muro, Nora Noriega, Fernie Mar-
tinez, and Terri Sherwood.
All of these students made a
great effort in making the year-
book a success. There were
year's hardworking staff were as arguments and disagreements, but
follows: Editors, jesse Moreno, there was also harmony, patience
and lots of cooperation among
them. They all worked together as
one big family, knowing the
pressure it took to have a year-
book ready for publication.
There were times that were
good and times that were bad.
But when one thought of the
whole student body depending
on the staff to come out with an
annual, there was no limit as to
how hard they had to work.
