Wc rcmembcr that only a short while ago the space now occupied by our school was barren desert disturbed only by small whirlwinds and heavy sandstorms and the tiny trails made by mini. ature creatures that live among tumbleweeds and cacti. We are able to visualize the first shovelful of sand and dirt preceding the great earth movement projects by machines, for then came the bulldozer, the grader, and the laborer. The sand dunes were leveled, the desert animals left in fright, and the foundation was set. The framework was erected, and the great piles of steel, bricks, and bags of concrete soon grew in-- to this magnificent and modern building, con' taining gymnasium, laboratories, library, and classrooms. May Burges High always be an inspiration to the students who come and go ind 1 credit to our community. The Editor IN MEMCRIAM.. . XVILLIAM H, BVRGES IVOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND Wfilliam H. Burges, for whom the Burges High School was named, was a true man of the Southwest. He was tlte type of man whom Texans admire in that he did great things in a most humble way. He did not have the opportunity for secondary education that most students hay e today hut through private tutors and self-styled education he pre- pared himself for college. Mr. Burges was graduated from the University of Texas in 1889. After graduation, and before coming to El Paso, he worked on a ranch, a time at which Indian encounters were not uncommon, Mr. Burges came to El Paso in the early 1890's and his fame as a lawyer became widely known while he was counsel for a local refining corporation. From early childhood he was interested in the improvement of education through and by the institution of better library service to the people of El Paso. lt is hard for a community to pay due respect to one who has done so much for his fellow men, but El Paso is proud to have a new high school named in honor of MR. I should like to take this opportunity to thank the administration and advisors for guidance and cooperation in all Student Council affairs. I should like to thank the student body for their fine spirit and support of Burges activities. Thanks too, to members of the Student Council. Suc- cess in your efforts has resulted from the desire to do a job well. In serving as Student Council and Student Body President during the year 1955-1956, I hope that I have done the work which was expected of my office, work which I have so much enjoyed. I believe that as their president I can say that the expressed desire of the Student Council to function for the student body has brought about a bond of loyalty to the school and the students therein. Perhaps in some ways we have erred. But certainly in many ways we have progressed. I believe that the Student Council has established a fine record and that traditions have been started which the student body of future years will look upon with favor, Our first year at Burges has been a memorable one. Sounds serious doesnt it' Only if you were on the staff, would you realize what a hilarious riot it was. Though many thought not, they can now look back and instead of smiling gently, mechanically laugh and go stark, raving mad. Everyone knows that an annual is an expensive operation and that it's that much harder starting from scratch. We were informed after joyfully becoming the staff, that we were fifty dollars in the hole without even starting. Is a yearbook hard work? This was a hard question to answer until the middle of the term when we wore out one sponsor and started in on another. Miss Nancy Miller held on as long as possible, then was carted off. Mrs. Sophie janet then had a heroines mind and now doesnt have any at all. Business ran smoothly until Elizabethy discovered we didn't have a typist. She becam: Copy Editor ..., Ooooh! Our very own double exposure brigade, often under the influence of K1-2A Tri'X, were constant enemies of many impatient students who thoroughly disliked picture retakes necessary as they were. Came near the last deadline, the camera shutter went on the blinkg they wouldnt shutter, so instant pictures were conjured up with the help of Big Deal's Polaroid, which saved his sports section too. The inexperienced staff worked hard this year and put out 11 issues filled with news and views. The first semester but one typewriter could be found. More wails and scraping. Second semester two an- tiques were donated. To no avail. Then the business department showed the staff what a typewriter real- ly looked like and even loaned them two. Things went more smoothly until the Hoofbeats staff learned what deadline meant. It was quite a corral, full of hoofing and stampeding kids. Mrs. Nadine Spato and Mrs. Blanche Fedric are the Y. XV. C. A. and teacher spon- sors. This years officers, pictured at the left, are: President-f-Sylvia Runte Vice-Presidentflilisa Montes SecretaryfwMarie Bradford Treasurergjeanette Gray HistorianfMartha Gene Green Chaplain-Neva Lou Robinson Ytiledif Y-Teens has forty-three members. Six of these are officers and charter members. One of the first activi- ties of this club was a scavenger hunt and supper party in December. The food which was collected was distributed I to needy families in El Paso. Mrs, Runte, mother of the president, treated the girls to a supper party when they re- turned from the hunt. February 8 was an important date to rememberfthe formal initiation of club officers and members. The girls enjoyed their mid-winter conference held at Cloudcroft in New Mexico on February 11 and 12. Delegates were there from all Y-Teens Clubs in Fl Paso. One purpose of the conference was to discover ways to improve the club, another to prepare for summer camp. Many winter sports were open to the girls during their stay at Cloudcroft. A cake sale netted the club money with which to work and in February the girls were treated to a swim and slumber party at the Y. XV. C. A. Besides playing other schools in the city and Ysleta in dual matches, Burges participated in and won some of the matches in the El Paso Tennis Club Invitational, Sun Carnival Tournament, City Tennis Tournament and the Odessa Invitational Tournament. The outlook for the future is brightened by the fact that, of the total number of boys and girls playing tennis this year, none of the boys will be lost through graduation and only 3 girls. HOOFBEATS PRESENTS - THE T956 BEAUTY CONTEST Beauty contestants were first selected by secret ballot by all high school students. During the Preliminaries, held at school one week before the contest, these contestants were judged on beauty, poise and personality. Twenty girls were selected by three judges, Mrs, Varner Henry, Mrs. Margaret Watson, and Mr. Bob Andrews, to continue into the finals. February 25 was the day Burges was to discover the most beautiful girl in the school. On that night 20 girls, dressed in party dresses and then in formals, walked across the stage in front of five final judges and a large au- dience of parents and students. Mrs. Lucille Talbot, Mrs. Elizabeth Lind, Mr. Hank Lemmon, Mr. Bill Marrow and Mr. Maury Bands selected the five most beautiful girls. An enormous multi-colored diadem centered on the stage, balloons, serpentine and two festive masks set on either side of the stage carried out a Mardi Gras theme. In keeping with this theme, Patsy Chauvet played her part as court jester. Members of the TuneSmiths, talent club at Burges, furnished entertainment for the Beauty Queen. Margie Baird was in charge of the contest. Dickse Wfilliamson and Rudy Montoya assisted her with decorations. Fmcee for the contest was Grady Dyer.
