If the great ideals of Democracy are to survive they will do so only because the youth of America are edu- cated to and believe in the principles for which those ideals stand. A Qlmfd 0g60l'l'l The year l94l-1942 has brought dramatic changes to our vvay of life. December 7 marked the end of a period when we Americans could be spectators. We became, that day, players in the grimmest game in the world - a war to survive. The challenge is clear. As players, vve must keep fit, we must be prepared, we must stand ready to serve, each of us as best he can, that America may live. I am proud to feel that the staff and student body of our school are meeting and will continue to meet that challenge. To the graduates of 1942, best wishes for every success. May you find happiness in serving your country and your fellow men. We will miss you, but we vvont you to feel that you vvill always belong to Burbank High School. Aloha. A. G. Filling the W'42 office of Vice-President was Nehf Koutz. Nehf was known for his activities on the gridiron, as well as being on the track team. Betty Garretto, was a capable and efficient secretary. During S'4l she was president of the Girls' Athletic Association. Another sportsenthusiast was Eddie Oda, efficient auditor for the W'42 semester. Proof of Ecldie's ability was shown by the fact that he was also auditor for S'4l. 'l!UZl2 .szniora WUZ2 .gzwlenf Counci Chosen to serve as the leaders of the W'42 Student Council of Burbank High School were, President, Ralph Mollerstuen, vice-president, Nehf Koutz, secretary, Betty Garretto, and auditor, Ed Oda. These officers were elected by the student body, and served in the executive and stu- dent councils. Among the many student activities promoted were: clean-up campaigns, direction of traffic in the halls, stimulating of school spirit, and last but by no means the least, the selling of War Bonds and Stamps. 'IXUZIQ .jczighfa anal Jacbea The Knights and Ladies activities underwent a definite change this semester. Student lack of response to the K. St L- functions was apparent, and it was not until the last three or four weeks of the semester that the true spirit was actually revived. This honorary group de- pends greatly upon the help and understanding attitudes of the student body. Only one club dance was held during the W'42 semester in the gym. Because of the war all social activities were limited. wh , league xecufiue ounci The W'42 Girls League supervised a most successful White Christmas program, with Dot Kirwin as president and Sylvia Beery as secretary. Members also attended the Girls' League Federation of Southern California and Arizona, which was held in November at the Hoover High School-Glendale. The Girls' League also planned teas, fashion shows, and other school activities. ,W 212 Commiffeea The duty of the publicity committee is to advertise and build up all activities concerning the student body. It is their aim to arouse enthusiasm and school spirit for sport events, dances, and assemblies. During the W'42 semester, signs and posters stressed football and basketball games, along with the night and afternoon dances- The W'42 semester's activities were greatly effected by the war, but our social commit- tee still was able to do a fine iob. There was a very successful Dutch Dig on October 17, to which everyone went dutch treat. There was also a schedule of noon dances throughout the semester. The W'42 semester Assembly committee, headed by Kenny Eyers, provided great enter- tainment for our student body. Among the many assemblies we enioyed were: the Talent show, White Christmas, and Thanksgiving programs. W Z2 QIWLQJ tel' ' L,.. 5 3 -1 1 I 'xxx ' - . Except for an overwhelming victory over the South Pasadena spikesters, and a forfeit win over Montebello, the plucky locals failed to find triumph easily. Several of the meets were close losses, however, and propects for next season are good. The fleaweights were paced by Steve Rios, who placed in the Southern California finals in the broad jump, Captain Charlie Mozley, 660 man, Duane Wingate and B. After that date it was decided that every girl in school ' ' be given First Aid instruction, so that all would be pre- l pared in case of any type of emergency. This Red Cross program has taken much time but now after the testing is all over and 90 percent of the girls have passed, we are very proud to have earned these Red Cross First Aid certificates. In addition to this, we have had our usual bas- Mrs. ketball, hockey, volleyball, and baseball seasons, plus some badminton, swimming and modern dancing. This year for the first time, advanced modern dancing has really developed into a very popular activity. The modern dancing classes are to be congratulated for their fine performance this spring. Miss Betty Ann In each physical education class, play-off games of each sport have been run off, thereby giving a school champ- ion of each sport offered in our program. Much interest has been shown in this program and next year, the gym depart- ment promises more and better activities for all. '1fUf42 Ti i xecu five ROW i-M. Munsey, J. Snyder, J. Jordan, S.
