Do you remember how we clung to his every word, how easily he held our attention? Did you, on that day, misunderstand' one word this grand old man said to us? No, of course you did not. 1 Do you, then, remember one sentence which, though said in passing, was vastly more important than anything else he could have said? Boys and girls, said Mr. Warde, the American language is being destroyed! Will you not help preserve it ? Have you ever stopped a moment during the course of a conversation and asked yourself, Am I, or am I not, using correct- English? Am I,tor am I not, enunciating clearly? Has the habit of using substitutes for the genuine words become so embedded in my mind that I cannot remember whether I used them or not ? We cannot but believe Mr. Warde's statement, if we will only listen closely to words rather than to meaning. Why must we use the drawn-out yeah in place of the short, crisp yes, and does not no express our meaning much more clearly and quickly than the popular nope ? There are a hundred other illustrations. Good English is too valuable an attainment to toss about carelessly, and distort into foreign words and sounds. On this great sea of Life 21 knowledge of the correct use of our words is as invaluable as the rudder to a ship. It will guide us through many calms and storms alike. Remove the rudder and the ship will founder, remove our knowledge of good Eng- lish and we will founder. One advantage we have over the ship, however: once our rudder of knowledge is firmly fastened, never can it be removed! But, aside from the advantage to ourselves, it is a patriotic obligation, a sacred duty for us to hand down to our posterity a language free from ali disfigurements. The Seniors who are leaving Burbank this year will, in time, be scat- tered far and near-but one sentence will we remember, one plea will we never forget, and, if the other members of the student body of Burbank High School would grant us a parting wish, that wish would be that you remember, and answer, this appeal, also: '1Wil1 you not help preserve the American language ?
