COMBAT SYSTEMS SWORD OF THE FLEET Zeus, the king of the Greek gods, had a shield named Aegis that was capable of deflecting lighting bolts. BUNKER hill ' s combat system is also called AEGIS because it is capable of defending a carrier battlegroup from an all-out air attack. Navy planners thought of AEGIS ships as the shield of the fleet while air strikes from aircraft carriers such as USS INDEPENDENCE would act as the fleet ' s offensive sword. Throughout the deployment, the men in BUNKER HILL ' s Combat Systems Department showed how to use Zeus ' s shield as an offensive weapon, capable of acting entirely separate from a battlegroup in independent operations. Fire Controlmen and Electronics Technicians kept the computers, electronics, and ra- dars operating at peak efficiency throughout the cruise, despite dust in the desert and freezing cold off Korea.
