iHiilsta ! BULKELEY HIGH SCHOOL HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT CLASS OF 1972 Happy or sad to be leaving, Remember, this is an end in your life. ill.: dw PASS AT YOUR OWN RISK m Be brave. Be strong, Have courage. Move swiftly. Be careful with your friends. Treasure all that was unique. About these four years. Knowledge is everywhere, But not the people who gave it to you, They are the differences of you. They gave you your softness and hardness. Be honest, intelligent, And occasionally foolish. Don ' t grow old. Be ferocious, Fight. Don ' t be idealistic for words only. Be all that youth ever was, (Guarding against selfishness and pride). Be cynical and forgiving, And never give up. 7 Accept sadness, Be always conscious of sun and breathing. And hands and legs and love. ft- it. 8 Think. You are important and individual and capable. You are loved. 9 JSilll Be kind and gentle, Feel, Be angry for pain and cruelty. Not for mistakes and weakness. Take chances. Be careful of points-of-no-return. Be wise and only slightly illusioned. n Say please and thank you. But say what you believe. Only lie if the truth unnecessarily hurts. Be counted and Be heard. 13 Give help. And accept it. Don ' t believe in limits, Be equal to what you want of yourself. Not to what others hold you to. Share. There will almost always be trouble. But it will be smaller than all the things of happiness and accomplishments. Try hard and winning and failing won ' t count. Be magnificently happy. 16 MR. MELROSE Mr. M elrose, a rather tall, thin and nice man, is a figure uniquely tied to our memories of four hardly forgettable years in Bulkeley. In the fall of 1968 he, like us, entered those old fashioned halls and during the following years prodded and encouraged us towards June, 1972. His real, human concern for the welfare of his students, educational and otherwise, added perhaps a.few more distinctive character lines to his face than were present before our shared experiences at Bulkeley. For his efforts and his sincerity remember him. mss iBBlUl S8S8 M p? ®; SiasSrtsis? .. . Sfiii WAY THIS WAY REMEMBER OUR FRIENDLY, NEIGHBORHOOD FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION? Remember the people who help make Bulkeley what it is. Look back to days at Bulkeley and remember the faculty and administration. Be able to admit with a smile that although it was never before believed, teachers are human. Ezra Melrose 20 Dominic Roy Lawrence Walter Blake Elinor Pease Marie Gubitz Arthur Pepin disease? Tip-toeing through delicate memories of tuxes and carnations, gowns and bouquets, we find romantic fantasies coming to life. To engage in group activities is necessary for one ' s self-adjustment in society. But in a moment of aloneness, when one chooses rather, to think and meditate, to search and reach, to express and listen to the beauties and ideals which surround him, he can experience the solitary tranquility of peace and serenity in his life. The dedicated students in the Future Teachers ' Club give their free time to be teachers ' aides in English and Math classes and also at Fox Elementary School. Would you believe .. . the Future Teachers??? 127 Classes for The Nurses ' Aides are held at the Annie Fisher school. The nurses ' aides also get experience by helping patients at Hughes Convalescent Home and Hartford Hospital CLUB Painting and decorating room 351 and singing Spanish songs in the halls at Christmas, the members of the Puerto Rican Club showed Bulkeley students some aspects of Puerto Rican culture. Students listen intently while Mr. Italia discusses the club ' s plans. Ahoy, the enemy ' s in sight! And now ... we proudly present the Bulkeley marching band. BLACK AWARENESS Conducting a money¬ raising campaign for the Martin Luther King Scholarship and a Memorial Service for Dr. King kept the members of The Black Awareness Club active. 135 136 Courteous to anyone who needs their help, the Library Aides give up their study halls to help the librarians and students. ARMED with several well put together bodies, some long-life shoelaces, and the never failing leadership of Coach Vertefeuille our enduring boys launched themselves at the long and lonely roads which are their greatest opponent. They measured their abilities against time, weather, and of course their human competitors and came away with pride to match their efforts. 151 H : H 1 in H ■ 1_1 DISORGANIZED and brutal? (Of course not!) Soccer players exercise the exacting skills of acrobats and the quick thinking of only experts. The team ' s struggle was a hard fought one against an impressive line of adversaries but their season record showed the degree of excellence they ' d achieved 154 55 FOOTBALL BULKELEY 16 THE most savage of sports saw a hard driven squad of men win convincingly (overwhelmingly!) against rival South Catholic and Hartford. Those victories crowned a season outstanding for the personal sacrifices required of all the Bulldogs. It appears there is justice in the world and dedication is rewarded. § 157 BASKETBALL THE game of strategy and sweat, painstaking thoroughness and brilliant defense. Bulkeley points sometimes cam e to the scoreboard as the result of a daring steal or interception but much more often than not the careful, time consuming, and occasionally risky maneuvers of a planned offense caused the addition of two more precious points. The effort put out by the team of 72 was rewarded pretty heavily with the sweetest taste of success. 160 ■■■ ■ ' ■ ■■■ ulkeley ' s Bullfrogs brought their it whether their motions were furious th and conservative they were the winners. WRESTLING IN almost no other team sport is the strength (and courage) of the individual so important. The pressure of winning fostered quick wits and quicker reflexes in our own star-studded team. So well developed and well coached was this Bulkeley team that victory came often. These guys knew how to win well and, when necessary, to lose honorably. .5 166 INDOOR TRACK ALL jesting aside (look left), the long winter afternoons spent sweating out the orde rs of Coach Hutchins were probably the cause of much agonized complaining but team performance revealed the concentrated preparations made and the demands met. OUTDOOR TRACK SOME of the oddest talents in the school made their strange presences known on the outdoor track team. Their raw (?) potential was refined and molded into a most unusual creature capable of leaping hurdles and hurling dead weights. The records will bear the mark of their strength and endurance. 171 GOLF WITH courage unsurpassed in all the annals of golfing, this caddie-less crew braved the wilds of various fairways (the desert-like expanses and infested swamplands) to compete for Bulkeley ' s greater glory. They returned alive and well successful. TENNIS UNDER the keen scrutiny of (brand new) Coach Vandervliet the small but potent tennis squad refined their serves and backhands to a sharp, strong pitch capable of countering the stiff competition the team faced all season. 175 iiii ma amm lllllliiSI BASEBALL consists of one crisis after another. Hot, wet, sunny innings punctuated with the crack of a bat or the cry of the umpire. Baseball is a game of tension and pressure building towards a climax at the plate or in the field. The Bulkeley nine (with interchangeable, replaceable parts) evidenced a more than ordinary grasp of the game in their many contests. NEW FIELDS NEW HORIZONS NEW RECOGNITION 178 Led by seniors Libby Fowler, Margar¬ et Barnicle and Deb Curtis, the badminton team swept the city series for the third year in a row. Despite the poor facilities and lack of practice time, the team also sent two girls to the C.I.A.C. regionals. 180 TABLE — TENNIS Practicing between periods, after school and during resource, the team molded themselves into a fine group of players. With mighty serves and super spins, the girls left the city competition in ruins and walked away with all the blue ribbons. BASKETBALL Despite rumblings of apathy, the girls ' basketball team put together their finest season yet. Under the strong, guiding hand of Coach H. Reynolds, and with the acquisition of uniforms, the team put their many skills together and came away with a superlative, upset win over Farmington H. S. All members giving 110%, the Bulldogs pulled away to win by three in the final two minutes. The team was led by senior tri-captains Linda Clavette, Deb Curtis, and Cindy Buch, to a fantastic 10 and 1, season record. 182 ■ Spiking, digging, serving all essentials of the game of volleyball, and none do it better than the Bulkeley girls. Led by the famed Ukie line, the team hopes to improve on their 2nd place regional standing in ' 72. Early every morning, vaulting, leaping to music and committing suicide on the un¬ even bars, under the watchful eye of Coach Billie Duval, you can find Bulkeley ' s best girl gymnists in the gym, prepar¬ ing for the City Meet. Dressed in leotards these ded¬ icated girls are at work by 7:00, every morning. TRACK - Dashes, shot put, javelin, and distance runs, are only a few of the skills the girls have mastered in an effort to form a complete track and field team. Though still very strong in field events, the team has lost some of its premier runners to graduation. But, with a little luck and a lot of work, the team should be sending a few of its members to the State Track Meet. CROSS — COUNTRY Running around the school and jogging at night, the girls ' Cross-Country team went into its second season with high hopes, partly due to the running of Miss Reynolds ' two top harriers, Donna LaJoie and Pat Collier. The team will be competing against such powerful teams as Avon and St. Barnard in a scheduled five meets. 186 The ranks somewhat depleted by graduation, the team will have to fill some very important positions. But, with two four year players still on the squad, the team should improve on their eleven win, one loss, three season record. SOFTBALL This year Bulkeley is proud to boast a newly formed softball team. Despite the lack of an appropriate diamond, the girls are sure of field¬ ing a first rate team for the City Series. CHEERLEADERS V-l-C-T-O-R-Y, victory, victory, that ' s our cry ... the cheerleaders are on the job. At basketball games, football and even unofficially assembling at soccer matches, the cheerleaders are an important organization at Bulkeley. Though they sometimes have to share the stage with unofficial members, in the stands, the cheerleaders are a welcome lift to the teams. Co-Captains Sue Jenks, Alice Szerejko, and all the other members work very hard, early mornings, during resources, with the help of Advisor — Mrs. Billie Duval, to build the Cheerleaders into a skilled and co-ordinated squad. 188 e ' . i nrmmnfTi FACULTY PATRONS Miss R.
