Vista Visions TT Å гад ام‎ fi ULT Rem Seegen Administrators The 1986-87 school year has been filled with many exciting opportunities for students and staff. Beginning with an increase of student achievement on the Michigan Education Achieve- ment Test for all 10th graders. There were a significant number of our students who received 100% on the reading and math portion of the test. Our students' effort carried over with their involvement in the Career Opportunity Center in Vocational and Technical Educa- tion. In particular, of the 78 students enrolled in the first quarter, 20 of them maintained perfect attendance. Also a significant number of these students were on the A B honor roll. New courses were added in the curriculum such as Practical Law and Business Machines. Students have appeared to accept the challenge of these two new and exciting courses. In the extra-curricular area for this school year, the football team placed three young men on the White Pine All-Conference Team. We also had a highly successful Girls Basketball team. The girls' total record was 22 wins and 4 losses. The team made it all the way to the Quarter-Finals, where they lost against Big Rapids High School. This years team won the most games in history of the BVHS for girls basketball. The Boys Basketball Team has continued to pick up where they left off last year after winning the State Class B Basketball Tournament in the school year 1985-86. This year's team has been rated number one in Class B since the season began. As our team heads into tournament play, we are hoping for a second state crown in varsity boys basketball. In addition to our athletic teams, our highly successful Gospel Choir has continued to perform in Saginaw, Flint, Lansing and surrounding cities throughout the state. The Gospel Choir also plans to continue its highly successful broadway musicals by introducing the Wiz to our community. Our Art classes have Dr. Jobn Howard Jr., Principal had some outstanding displays at Central Office and some stu- dents have also participated in the Scholastic Art Display. Like- wise, the Band has made a television performance in the Bavarian Festival Parade in Frankenmuth. Also, two of our students are performing professionally in rock groups. One student was se- lected to participate in the Western Michigan University's All Star Band but decided to enter the United States Army Band Corps. In addition, the high school has continued to be involved in the National Program dealing with Effective Schools and Effec- tive Teaching. Teachers are being trained in the elements of effective instruction by increasing their teaching skills to help students. Teachers have devoted over 500 hours of instructional workshop time to learn new methods of instruction. Also, the high school has established an after school Tutoring Program that is beginning to have some impact on students with their classroom assignments. We are presently experimenting with a Saturday Program as an alternative to attendance and disciplinary suspension problems. Our ex pectation is to keep all students in school. Other areas of success have been our continu- ing development of a quality yearbook under the direction of Mr. R. Crosby, BVHS students have also continued to participate in the county and statewide Mock election and Law related work- shops in Saginaw. Our students in foreign Language have participated in Sagi- naw Valley State College's Foreign Language Day as well as our Hispanic students participating in leadership workshops at SVSC. These activities are some of the highlights which occurred during the 1986 87 school year and I congratulate staff as well as students on the important roles they have both played as we become a more interesting and effective high school. mu _. é D tee өү ы ULNA VDIA Trina Hicks and Ryan DeBardelaben Margaret Hatter—Homecoming Queen Leslie Sherrod B.V. Buena Vista offers its students the opportunity to attend titles which they do not have here at the home school. Different titles are offered at different times of the day so students match their career choice with the best Academic Background. Students select their career choice and can complete either a one or two year program. The training received is taught by teachers who have actually worked in their field. The classrooms are more of a working lab than the traditional classroom. Attendance is stressed as it would be in a work site. A strict attendance person keeps students parents informed. Many students are finding C.O.C classes a good way to get an introduction to the world of works in their chosen area. Bottom L to R—Heather Coats, Elizabeth Daley. This agreement consists of those studies the student is studying which are related to the job training station and the duties that the student will be performing on the job. Cooperative education allows a student to creatively práctice and develop skills learned in the classroom with a real job situation in Business and Industry. Co-op Ed. affords an opportunity for students to enhance their employability and earning power while contributing a significant portion of their academic expenses. A partnership develops between School and Business, leading to well educated and technically trained students. Co-op reduces recruitment and training costs for employees and builds a satisfaction of helping to educate our youth. 61 | | | | Tanya Akins Melba Baldwin Latrice Chandler Regina Clark 64 National Honor Society Advisor Mr. L.
