lfiiflfsewmwm Progress in Science Barbara Mitchell, Eva Garcia, Anthony Jaimie, Paul Bridgewater, and Robert Stebner, who are students in Miss Gifford's Fifth Grade, are grouped around an exhibit that demonstrates techniques used in a unit about rocks. Distribution, types, uses, and chemical content of rocks have been studied. In addition to the usual tools of mod- ern education, extensive use has been made of maps, labeled samples, scrap books, and visits by resource people who can give them expert information on rocks. Highland Park students Tom Taylor, Jackie Dixon, Gracie Welch, and Margaret Rosas, who are in Miss Mayville's and Miss Zazac's Third Grade Rooms, pose in front of equipment and projects used by these two classes in their study of the beaver. The classes have studied several species of animals during the year. They have used films, film strips, encyclopedias and other reference books, and a variety of art projects as learning aids. 2 A is Virginia Whitmore, Leonora Chacon, Carolyn Wilson, Tim Gould, and Philip Dixon-Fifth Graders-huddle around a work table which sup- ports various pieces of equipment med in ex- periments to determine the properties of mag- nets and man made metals. Included are a telephone generator, a permanent magnet, an electromagnet, iron filings, and tacks. Research from the classroom library and the personal library of their instructor, Mr. Earl, demonstrations, films and film strips, and a variety of flat pictures have all added to their knowledge. The charts in the background are bait to whet their interest in the next project, the study of the stars.
