Barr welcomed the student body and faculty to the new high school and officially opened the first school year. School Dedication On Sunday, November 8, 1959. the Buena Vista High School was officially dedicated. Pictured is Mr. James Tuck who is accepting the keys of the building on behalf of the teachers. Mr. Nonnan Lentner per- formed a similar office for the School Boardg Mr. Fred Rindhage, for the parents: Miss Kathy Princing, for the students. Dr. Charles Anspach, of Central Michigan University delivered the dedicatory address - This High School--A Pledge to The Future . Fay Gallagher, a student from Mr. Faupel 's Fifth Grade Class at Ricker, is shown receiving a prize from Marcia Cameron, the editor, for naming this year's annual in a school wide con- test. Her winning entry was, of course, VISTA VISIONS. A VISTA, meaning viewg VISIONS, meaning prophecy - put them together as VISTA VISIONS, or a view of the future. In truth, the educational facilities of a community reflect the future growth and welfare of that community. The Buena Vista 89 District is a forward looking community always alert to the needs of the future and exemplifying the. theme of this book, PROGRESS IN EDUCATION, in the way it provides for these needs. We soon will have a new elementary school on South Towerline Road. This school will be for kindergar- ten through grade six pupils who live east of the By-Pass and south of the railroad tracks between Janes and Holland. This new school, which does not have a name as yet, will have only one very short corridor by the office. The large multi-purpose room, which will be in the center of the school with entrances at each corner, will also serve as the passage from one room to another. When finished, the school will have over 225 pupils to enroll but will be able to handle over 300. This school will be the first one in Saginaw County which will be heated by electricity. Like all our other schools, hot lunch will be served although most of the children who attend will walk to school because they will live quite close. The boys and girls who will go to this school are now attending a crowded Ricker School or are in the kindergarten at Star School. By next fall our Henry A. Doerr School should be larger to handle the increased number of boys and girls who live near-by. The west wing of the school will be expanded to include the equal of five more classrooms It is expected that grades three and four will be in the new part. Besides the classrooms, two additional toilet rooms will be constructed.. By the use of folding doors, the new part can be made into two very large rooms which may be used to teach all of one grade at one ti.me fsuch as for a movie, etc.J. It is hoped that building the new school and adding to the Henry A. Doerr School will allow us to have more teaching space at our other schools. 3 I959-60 Boa STANDING: Mr. Wilford Kreuger, Vice Pres.: Mr. Herman Hallmann, Trustee rd of Education l f m '- V4 , V MR. In addition, the pupils learn to care for them and leam about their living habits. This serves as a background for the study of natural history and, later, zoology The chart in the background shows items of scientific interest that the children have leamed about during the year. For instance, the chart in the background shows information about magnets that the children have arrived at through simple scientific experiments. These Third and Fourth Grade pupils from Mrs. Tinkus 's room, Mary Beth Mueller and Terry Melzo, are seen inspecting a coal gar- den. This is a common experiment designed to inspire scientific curiosity on the part of the students. Coal, coarse salt, ammonia, household blueing, water, and food coloring are combined to form starlike crystals in glowing colors. Growth of the crystals is a matter of hours. The wonder of this simple chemical reaction touches off many questions about the wonderful world of chemistry in which we live. Danny Ahrens, and Maureen Peddler, pupils in Mrs. Schrnidt's Fifth and Sixth Grade Room, point out a poster display constructed during the unit the class has just completed on teeth. The class has leamed what foock help make teeth healthy, the minerals of which the teeth are made, why brushing is important, and h0w to brush their teeth in the best fashion. Visual aids such as posters, movies, film strips and bulletin boards, books and reference material, diagrams and charts are just some of the tools used in this project in health education. ,xf X 'S 1- 4 ,.,..u+ff-WW yawn? She is telling the class about her toy. This encourages the art of self -expression before a group. Later, the rest of the group will play with the toy. This encourages sharing and promotes the art of playing together in a socially meaningful fashion. The children in Mrs. McKelvey's Room are dramatizing a story about White Cow and her baby. These First Graders are studying how other people live. The farm situation in this story is quite foreign to a majority of the class. They are leaming valuable lessons about the existence of other kinds of people than those with whom they come in daily contact. Living and playing together is stressed in this type of education. The children are: Timothy Schmidt, Pamela Miller, Herman Perkins, Terry Iayzan, Billy Seidel, Regina Carstens, Royal Bumell, and Pamela Bresser. Here we have Charles Sanders, Howard Csutora, John Ehlert, and Dale Reinman drama- tizing an imaginative approach to the moon. This project stresses teamwork necessary in the complex demands of a space-age world. On a more down to earth level, the children learn how to work out disagreements. They also leam how to give and accept suggestions. Planned plays and dramatizations such as this one stretch the social boundaries of the individual children and make them aware of the inherent rights of others. This scene took place in Mrs. Matthews First Grade Class. As the students enter the second grade their environment begins to broaden. Mrs. Well 's Second Graders are pictured on their visit to the Buena Vista Fire Department. They learn its operation as a part of a unit on Studying Community Helpers . They made a model of a fire department, wrote stories about fire de- partments, and drew pictures to illustrate the stories. They begin to use books to a greater degree and they see films and film strips that further broaden their understanding of their immediate environmental background. M Miss Gunther's Third Grade pupils are doing a social studies unit on Indians and Indian life. They made Indian artifacts, collected Indian exhibits, made bulletin boards from flat pictures and original art work, sang songs, wrote reports from ency- clopedias and other reference materials, and saw films and film strips about Indians. A large variety of leaming tools are now coming into use as these students mature in their physical growth and their social adjustment. Pictured are: Candace Benemann, LaVonne Lyttle, Randy Dreffs, and Victor Chaney. This Third Grade Class, Mrs. LaBeau's, are doing a pioneer unit. This is a sort of do it yourself project. The children have churned butter, are stirring up corn muffins, and will presently bake same. They are learning at first hand some facts about pioneer life. Of course other resources have not been neglected. The usual exhibits, bulletin boards, film strips, motion pictures, refer- ence work, art projects, and songs ac- company the muffin project. James Strebbing, Charles Lindow, Michael Kachemeister, and Linda Brown are pictured. Mrs. Johnson's Fourth Grade Class is studying the state of Maine. They are broadening their social awareness to other states and subsequently to other nations. Here is a replica of a typical Maine village Featured on the bulletin board are goals of the study project, geographical settings, and pictures of one of the chief industries, fishing. Increased skills make the maps, art displays, reading projects, motion pic- tures, film strips, songs, and other study devices increasingly meaningful to the students. They give very complete oral and written reports that summarize their discoveries. In the picture are: Dan Ruiz, Ted Konecny, and Les Histed. sbmlfi URAUE COVE Ill! Mrs. DesRocher 's Fifth Grade are learning to know Michigan. Jim Hurren and Larry Csutora are shown with some of the graphic tools used to make their studies more in- teresting and complete. The map features principal pleasure spots, industries, and natural resources of the state. The class has also had replicas of Dow Chemical, auto plants, universities, and displays of dairy and farm industries to study. With increased maturity, the students are ready to relate their studies to developing awareness of their own relations to the social framework in which they live. Students are also given opportunities to put these concepts of man 's role in a highly in- dustrialized and socially integrated society into active use. Mis. Diechman's Sixth Grade Class has organized and supervised a school wide Red Cross project. ln this picture the children are making an afghan which will eventually go to a veterans' hospital. They also collected boxes of Christmas gifts to send to less for- tunate children in foreign lands. They sent three hundred place mats to local hospitals to brighten up holidays for the patients. Also, they sent fifteen stuffed animals to children in hospitals. Sandy Morford, Jim McDonald, and Bill Kehr are to be seen in the foreground of this picture. if, ':.. 1 ' Q ij ng ,iff ' ilfsiiif , .Q X , K 1 RICKER f' 1 5? , 35 pr1nciPa1 Secretary Mrs. Brickel MIS- 1163011 WK.: LNZMAM . ,j lin, . Here First Grade students Brigitte Bujak and Mike Hamlin watch Tom Reinbold mark the missing vowel while their teacher, Mrs. Schneeberger looks on. Students are introduced to long and short sounds and leam to associate the shape of the letter with the sound of the letter. Mrs. Reinke's First Graders are writing the consonant blends which are pictured on the chart. The chart contains initial consonants in the word pictures. A variety of picture cards and charts are used for each sound. Pictured are Ricky Freeman, Cheryl Richard, and Sandy Gilbert. The study of phonics, or the sounds of letters is a very important part of the first grade reading work. This study of phonics will be intensified during the next several grades. Q-N ' at v .W These pupils are playing a game de- signed to teach them to match words and phrases on the experience chart on the left with flash cards which they hold in their hands. The exercise on the black board at the right asks them to fill in missing words and aids in developing comprehension of the words. These students are in Mrs. Atkins 's First Grade. They are Chris Nowaczyk and Mike Brickel, standing, and Cindy Jensen and Lisa Myers, seated. 'Nm 7 ty? Mrs. Witer's Second Graders are locating root words. Knowing the meaning of root words is useful in expanding the individual vocabulary of the student for they enable him to pick up many meanings from the context of what he is reading. Here Sandra Greko points out roots to Marlo Soliz, Jan Johnson, Kathleen llgen, Linda Moll, Kurt Burmeister, Yvonne Schoen, Paulette Murray, Cathy Arnst, and Kim Geitman. To become a good reader is not simple for it calls for the mastery of a wide variety of skills over a fairly long period of time. In the struggle to become an independent reader, it is necessary to leam to divide words into syllables. Here we see Timothy Hanks and Norine Eaves, pupils in Mrs. Stuber's Second Grade at Ricker, in the act of so dividing words and in showing the accented sylla- bles while the class looks on. Andrew Osmond is pointing to the spell- ing ge while Carol Buckler is marking the vowel that precedes ge . These students in Mm. Barron's Second Grade are learning that certain rules are aids to the development of independent reading. Such mastery is not to be had over night. A great deal of patience is necessary on the part of the student, the teacher, and the parent. These Fourth Graders from Mrs. Stadnika 's Room are learning to use the library as a learning tool. Having developed some basic reading skills, they are now ready for independent research projects. Now it is necessary that they learn intelligent use of the card catalogue, reference books, and how to check out books that they may need. Pictured are Mary Ames, Linda Marsden, Gordon Sedwick, Karin Johnston, Arthur Marosi, and Walter Zientek. Finally, Dick Merlone and Bob Betzold put the finishing touches on a drawing which they have completed in conjunction with a reading project in social studies. They are students in Mr. Matson's Sixth Grade. This illustrates the fact that many spe- cific types of reading are developed during the elementary program. Reading for fun, reading for knowledge during daily school work, reading for outside projects such as this one-all have their place in the ele- mentary program. At the end of the sixth grade the individual student should have developed into a skilled independent reader of comprehensive taste and abilities. Connie Sierocki, Jerry Stoddart, Ursula Bujak, and Michael Stramboski, students in Miss Harry's Fifth Grade, have done an independent research project on Henry Ford and are engaged in making a report to the class. They are telling the in- teresting story of Henry Ford's first auto- mobile. This is a device for stimulating the interest of the rest of the class for independent, purposeful reading. ,f5?ff.1,, Ricker Junior High Faculty WILLIAM ARBURY ANNETTE BORDUA EVERETTE FAGER LETHA FISHER Arts and Crafts Pflyslcal Education Physical Education ml CPR' First Semester Lit-Lib. They have constantly expanding horizons of interest and a compelling need to find for them- selves satisfactory relationships to the world they are newly discovering. This means that they need to have a wide variety of choice in subject matter and a greater amount of freedom as individu- als if they are going to become inde- pendent, adult citizens capable of making intelligent decisions and playing a satisfactory role in our democratic way of life. -fps: J Ricker Jr. High in Education Consequently, students are now moving from place to place and meeting with a variety of rather specialized teachers. They learn responsibility and self -discipline by being faced with the necessity of ad- justing to new and sometimes rather per- plexing situations. All students take certain basic subjects such as English, history, math and science. In addition, they select some subjects through which they will explore the bound- aries of a world which is ever expanding for them because of their increasing ma- turity and an increasing awareness of the complexity of modern life. These subjects --physical education, shop, homemaking, arts and crafts, journalism, and instrumental music-help the student to grow intellectually and educationally. 1 , If 1 MR.
