K digit WW.. :ng . x .N-W Friends from abroad enjoy family life on the Gold Coast In Germany we hear so much about America, both good and bad, so I didn't know what to think about the U.S. What I found out was so different from what I expected. Besides the fast food, everything was a good experience for me, especially, my host family. I really got to know the American way of life. I would have liked to stay longer than four weeks, though, here in sunny California, stated Astrid Carstensen. The 15 students from Elmshorn, West Germany, arrived in the U.S.A. October 2 not knowing what to expect. They were soon greeted, however, with a warm welcome and in no time at all they started to adjust to the American ways. It was the beginning of a month long stay intended to acquaint.them with the historical, cultural and geographical uniqueness of America, not to mention the people. The exchange is offered to teen-agers through a program between Buena and Ventura High Schools and their Elmshorn counterparts. Through the project students attend classes, listen to guest speakers and travel around. Buena sponsored the October group, and sends its own students to Europe next summer. German students had a very busy schedule. They attended five regular periods a day. During 6th period they had their own class to discuss several different topics. These youths had meetings with local residents discussing various aspects of American life such as education and history. The Germans and American teen friends took a 5 day trip fOctober 13-18j to San Francisco, Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. They visited many famous sites in San Francisco such as Alcatraz and Golden Gate Bridge. Andrea Backauf stated, My inpression of the United States was very positive. The people are very friendly. Maybe it comes from the good weather they have all year long. It was fantastic to visit so many places, but what I enjoyed most was the trip to San Francisco. It is a beautiful city. Last of all, they could not leave without visiting the happiest place on earth , Disneyland, and movie land itseIf , Universal Studios. l enjoyed the trips to Disneyland 8- Universal Studios the most. At Disneyland I liked best Space Mountain, Space Tours and Matterhorn. The visit of Universal Studios was very impressive because I could see how they make their special effects. observed Jan Hayunga. Before the Elmshorn folks prepared for their trip home, there was a special German banquet held Oct. 28. At this gathering they put on a series of skits, slide shows, and performances for their American families and friends. 31 By Heidi Criss
