' li The Community As a Classroom Again this year our local community served as a learning opportunity. Involvement in the local community can serve as a learning experience for both the students and the community as a whole. Buena students have been involved in a number of community activities this past year. Approximately 200 Buena students, mostly seniors, have helped Camarillo State Hospital residents to make contact with the local community. Some of the ways hospital residents have been brought into the community are: l. Football games- a total of over 30 mentally retarded residents attended two of our home football games. 2. Fair Day- 35 Buena stu- dents served as escorts for either mentally retarded or emotional disturbed residents at a special outing to the Ventura County Fair. 3. Gym nights- Tuesday night for emotionally disturbed, Thursday night for mentally retarded. Healthy physical activity plus social interaction come from this pro- gram which averages 20-25 Buena students per night. Fi-Q ' - W' ' ' rf' HE: ' j 22: W i. il A .tt A if 2. sych Field fellows find their care showing Psychology Field Studies Psychology Field Studies is a program of volunteer service at Camaril- lo State Hospital. Buena seniors receive school credit for working with emotionally disturbed andfor mentally retarded adolescents and adults during periods 5 and 6 each school day. The program was initiated by Camarillo State Hospital in the fall of 1971. Buena and San Fernando Valley High Schools were the pioneer schools. At present Sylmar, Newbury Park, Appollo and Ventura high schools also participate. About 25 Buena students each semester participate in this programg the only requirement is an interest in help- ing others. During the past four years the Buena students have provided over 25,000 hours of volunteer service at the hospital. Students thinking of going into the field of psychology or teaching will find this program of particular interest. Many Psychology Field Studies students continue to provide volunteer service at the state hospital after they graduateg some students have continued on to col- lege to get a degree allowing them to work as a professional at a state hospital. Other students have gone directly to work at the state hospi- tal or similar facilities. Students interested in this program should contact Mr. Badstubner. 3 ws.. i I as Rx . I.
