The Journalism I course includes a study of the steps required in producing a mod- ern newspaper with special emphasis on the functions of staff members for effective school publication. Bruce Biller offers consultation to first year students, from left, Sue Logan, Connie Lotspeich, Bruce, Vista- 16,153-'A Kathy Kennedy, and Cathejean McGillin. Journalism provides the knowledge and skills in the use of language arts which enable the writer to present his ideas The Buena Vista, which is distributed free of charge to members of the ASB, is prepared and edited by members of the journalism class. Ap- proximately seventeen issues a year are pub- lished, featuring articles dealing with campus life, curriculum, activities, and sports. It gives stu- dents practice copy- reading, proofreading, dummying, making up, and seeing the results in print before a reader audience. Staffers learn the important techniques of interviewing for sto- ries and how to meet others. Membership on the staff stresses the im- portance of writing in maintaining an in- formed public in a de- mocracy, and helps de- velop critical and discriminating readers. This year, the Buena Vista won the Quill and Scroll International Hon- or Award. Mr. Robert L. Thompson is the advisor. effectively. Knowledge gained in this course is put to good use on the Buena

Buenals yearbook, the Conquistador, is a pic- torial review of the yeaI s classes, activities, student organizations and sports. They cover school athletic events, or assign stories to reporters in keeping in touch with the athletic pulse of school competitions. First year Journalism stu dents write stories and fea- tures for the 'Vista'.
