My fingers wandered idly over the tiresome desk. I knew not what I was doing, Or what I was studying then, For I received a slap by the teacher Louder than a great Amen. Seated one day in chapel I was weary and ill at ease, For Cicero was speaking vaguely Of the bravery of Pompey's deedsg I know not what he was saying Or what I was dreaming then, But a note struck me on the cranium Like the sound of a great Amen. It Hooded my cerebellum Sent a chill down my spinal cord, And it wakened my tired spirits With a jar like an ordinary Ford. I first looked at the teacher CThe censors withheld the narneb With an innocent look which I assumed To free me from all blame. Her eyes were turning quickly And I picked up my pencil and wrote, But I looked from the corner of my eye And saw that all was not well. She glanced to the floor where the note was. In which glance something seemed revealed. And looking down I was horrified For just half the note was concealed. I saw her jot my name down I lost my temper then. And I said a word which the teacher heard. It didn't sound like Amen. The main motive for the writing of this poem is to show the young men the folly of letting their emotions carry them astray: Love is one form of insantiy, Affecting both the young and old. Sometimes the cause of profanity. When the tale of love is told. School teachers, friends and all Are affected by this curse. And when you once in love do fall, It gradually becomes worse. It leaves the suitor without the cash. And perhaps a broken heart. So if a pain through your heart doth dash Be sure it's not a Golden Dart. But my eyes met her eyes steadily Sweet Girl Graduate-One who having taken her With my foot pressed firm on the ngte, bachelor's degree is ready to take her bachelor. My pencil worked with feverish haste Rat-The only rodent of which a woman, once she What I wrote, I cannot tell takes it into her head, is not afarid.
