Tennis: KLEFT TO RIGHTJ: Robert Gilley, Erik Monsen, Mike Godin, Brian Shear BACK ROW Fred Garner iCoachJ james Baker, Todd Hunter, Richard Thies, Mike Daugherty, Paul Qvale, David Crosby Eric Lyden The Second Annual Buckley Celebrity Tennis Tournament was again held at the Grif- fin court with over three hundred attending. In the finals, Buckley's principal, Dr. Karazissis and Coach Fred Garner defeated celebrities Charleton Heston and Carl Reiner. Proceeds allowed Buckley to resurface both courts to the same playing speed, and to build a much-needed half court practice backboard behind the field court. Coach Garner's team puts emphasis on youth. The tenth grade, nicknamed The Tennis Class , with seven lettermen, contributed fine singles and doubles play by Brian Shear, jamie Baker, Mike Godin, David Crosby, Eric Lyden, Paul Qvale, and Richard Horner. Todd Hunter, ajunior, is the team's third year veteran, while fresh- men Robert Gilley, Maxie Chung and Richard Thies are gaining experience. Buckley fielded a great team with depth and the majority of its members are on the Academic Honor Roll. We should win the Delphic League for the third and final time, as next year we will enter the stronger Pre aratory League, and we are looking forward to this chal- lenge. Again the highlight of our season was our annual flight and weekend to Catalina, where we were the guests of the Catalina Island School at Toyon Bay for a fine match and a tour of Avalon and Catalina Island. The completion of the Pavillion will give us a third court, and embryo plans call for constructing courts over the student parking area, thus giving Buckley first class facilities in this fastest growing of sports. --Coach Fred Garner - u f , - i ,ff- 1,1 ,:s:.f11,11, a
