This year has been one ofvictories, losses, wins and gains. There have been joys and sorrows. During this year the various s t u d e n ts from many schools have come together to be one. The halls of B,H,S. have seen our Sophomores become Senior High students and the mighty seniors pass on into a new era in their life. To record these events is the purpose of an annual. So with these ideas in mindg we, the 1971 Buckeye Staff, proudly present the Annual to the stud ents of Buckhorn High School, - Steve Bledsoe A r Editor y 1 K X Q , uk riff, .seg f as . , Tiff ' x'?aQ..g'551Z Q, :JN ' L , YA nw -T i2 , iff W' Al Q vs Ov 1 HISTORY OF BUCKHORN HIGH SCHOOL le L if if Beginning Of A New Era In An Old Settlement - Ali, A ' . . Q f G Of K, 6 U ' xg In Madison County, Alabama, . . .there stands a proud Buckhorn High School. of RMU , 3:1 Behind its sturdy brick walls, day after day, modern American teen- agers seek RH., X knowledge with hardly a backward glance at the illustrious history of that locale. K I QQ , , f One wonders if perhaps the mysterious voices from Buckhorn's fascinating past do J not haunt their sub-conscious minds, filling them with determination t o conquer algebra and English, In 1804, when Alabama was still a part of the Mississippi Territory, prospec- tive settlers began to migrate from Lincoln and Franklin counties, in Tennessee, into Cherokee Lands of today's M adison County, They came with theirhorses and cowsg with their chickens, cats, and dogsg and whatever else they might have possessed. . , In 1809 the government put the Buckhorn area land on sale, the present school site, however, was not bought until 1831. . .Indian Jackson, traveled through this area many times d uring his fights with the Indians, , ,A saloon was built in t nriangle for m ed by the Winchester Road and the Deposit Road. Andrewlackson often visited the tavern fnearbyy and the old saloon, bringing with him his prized cocks, which fought here, and his fast horses which raced on the track adjoinin the tavern, A few years ago signs of the old track were still visible in what is now a farmers field owned by Edmund Payne. In the summer of 1855, there occurred a deer hunt across the Winchester Road from the old saloon. This hunt was destined to go down in history, Men stationed themselves at various points, hoping tosurround a deer that had been sighted in the area, Because of his youth and inexperience, an eighteen year old lad, William Loving Fanning, was given an inferior post, Mr. Fanning killed thedeer on a spot The beautiful horns were placed in the saloon, where they remained for many years. . .After the horns were mounted, the saloon as well as the surrounding com- munity, received the name Buckhorn. Today the famous horns hang in the office of the principal at Buckhorn High School. On November 19, 1956, the Madis on County Board of Education bought the tract of land from Mrs. Annie Bruce Walker Short, 1 fir sim 73 f . So it was at Buckhorn, on August 29, 1958, Buckhorn High School. . .like a bright new ship, was officially launched onits hitherto uncharted course through strange and choppy waters, Senior high students W from New Market and Riverton, bitter rivals fin the field of athleticsj for years were now to hail the same Alma Mater: '71 r - I fv ly ?
