The B Team consisted of Andy Hancock, Kim Schulz, and Ronnie Bachtel. Turner, Mark Holley Carter Looney, a Senior student, was the highest individual State Winner in the Cotton Judging. Because the high school auditorium was not available due to construction the Buckeye Elementary School Cafetorium was used and the club made a Dinner Theatre out of the presentation. The Hawks were named Central Division Co Champions. tieing with Peoria with a Conference Record of 9-I. The girls only conference loss was against Peoria. 54 - 59 on a double overtime. Buckeye took on Nogales in the quarter- finals of the State Tournament which was held at Shadow Mountain High School and eliminated them 6l - 54. Their next victim in the Finals was the team from Winslow. Once again the girls embar- rassed their opponents sending the Bull- dogs home after a loss of 60 -52. In the Championship game, Buckeye faced Min- gus and gave them a close win, 50 - 58. The Hawks brought home the Runner Up trophy to add to their collection. During the State Tournament Claudine Birkley was named to the lst Team All- Tournament. Diane Doster and Cassie Sawyer were picked up for the 2nd Team. Earlier in the season the Hawks won the Dysart Christmas Tournament by beating Independence 76 - 60, Gilbert 45 - 4l. and Payson 52 - 36. Birkley, Doster and Sawyer made the All- Tournament Team. Buckeye will be losing Seniors Claudine Birkley, Diane Doster, Dee Ann Haggard. and Cindi Henderson. Returning players will be .luniors Kathleen Ganley, .loycelyn McGinty, Cassie Sawyer, and Connie Val- dez. Sophomores returning will be Sharon Jolley, Gladys Rohrback, and Kristi Sand- ers. The girls had a quick, fast breaking team and were known for their man-to-man de- fense and full court trap. The Buckeye Hawks Varsity Football Team opened their first year in class 'HA ball in good fashion as they com- piled a 7 win 2 loss record in the regular season. The Hawk team started the season on an impressive note as they won their first 3 games by defeating Dysart's Demons 35-6 and destroying the Mingus Marauders 42-0 and then edging their rival for many years the Aio Red Raiders by the score of I 2-0. The Hawks then met top ranked Flowing Wells in Buckeye but were defeated in a heart breaking loss of I3-5. at that time the Hawks were ranked 2nd in State and the Caballeros were top ranked and undefeated as were the tough Hawks. The Hawks then took the long bus ride to Lake Havasu and defeated the Knights. Tim Kirkpatrick in the movie Hawks Slaughter Gerard handed the 2nd loss of the season as the surprising Patriots beat the Hawks I 9-6. The next week the Hawks played Gerard and defeated the Red Coats, then the Ha wks won their last two games of the season by beating Kingman and the Peoria Panthers. The Hawks then went on to the play- offs and had to play the Flowing Wells Caballeros in Tuc- son and were defeated again by the score of 2l - IJ. This put the Hawks out of the playoffs but they still had a great season and a fine team. At the end ofthe year there were 7 Hawk players named to the All Division team, to prone the Hawk football squad had another good team for the third season in a row. The team was competitive throughout the season and their confer- ence record was 6-4. The overall record was 7-6. The team was made up of twelve players. The seniors were Cindi Henderson. Maurine Ledford. Brenda Tyree, Diane Rickstrew, Angie Wilbum, Leanne Aul and DeeAnn Haggard. The Junior members of the team were Theresa Meck, Kristi Henderson, and Cassie Sawyer. Two Sopho- mores were on the team and they were Sharon Jolley and Kimberly T yree. The top performer on the team was Cindi Henderson who was named Ist team AA Central Division. Kelli Hallman, the team 's Number I Runner and l.ori Skousen, were the only two girls who competed in the first meet which was held at Dysart on September I0. The course consisted of I .85 miles at which Hallman rar. in 14.23 minutes and Skousen in I 5.30. ff.-2 second meet of the season was September I6. Buckeye and Babo- ? ' f vi . aa veled to Ajo and Buckeye entered Jennifer Walters and Cece ffm..- .along with Hallman and Skousen. Buckeye didn 't get a team placing because they needed 5 girls in order to be eligiblle. The team went fs '?.1perior and for the first time were eligible to place as a team be.. '- fse. Brenda Barrett was running as the 5th girl. They lost to Superior 3 I-24 but still did very well individually. The course was I .9 miles and the girls times were as follows. Hallman I 5.5 I , Walter I 6. I 3. Munoz I 6.53. Skousen I7.27, and Barrett I 7.58. Coach Smith felt that her team would be a top competetor at the Divisionals. The Buckeye Girls Cross Country Team finished a close 2nd to Lake Havasu 's 23 points with 33 of their own low-score wins. Gerard had 76 points and was followed by Kingman, Peoria, and Independence who did not have full teams. Kelly Hallman fJr.j was a medalist at the Divisional Meet and Hnished 4th with a time of I 5.44 over a hilly I .9 mile course. Lori Skousen fSr.j came in 7th with I 6.20 and Jennifer Walters fSoph.j got 8th at I6.33. Ceci Munoz fFosh.j Hnished with I 6.54 and Brenda Barrett was I 6th at I 9.I 3. The girls had an excellent day and later competed in the State Meet held at Buckeye Hills. They ran very well among stiff competition. Jennifer Walters was the first Hawk across the Hnish line with Kelly Hallman right behind. Ceci Munoz was third, Lori Skousen 4th, and Brenda Barrett 5th. The Hawks placed 8th overall with Tuba City winning the State Championship. The girls had a good season and worked very hard. The team was coached by Mary Smith. BO YS CROSS COUNTRY The Boys Cross Country Team finished their season with the Divisional Meet being held at Gerard. Freshman Dean Hallman was Buckeye's Number I Runner for the day placing 25th with a time of 20.05. Ralph Pisano was close behind, finishing 29th at a time of 20.42. Senior Pat Meyer was the third Ha wks across the finish line and finished 30th at 20.43. Robert Aul, Damon De I.a Pena. and Kenny Morris were the 35th, 36th and 37th Runners. No one qualified for State but a good effort was put forth by the Hawks. The Hawks had eight season meets and one Invitational which was held at the Buckeye Hills west of Buckeye. De l.a Pena was Buckeye 's first runner at this meet with Meyer 2nd, Aul 3rd, and Morris 4th. Ajo took I st place. Seven boys lettered on the team this year. They are Pat Meyer, Sr., Robert Aul, Jr, Damon De La Pena, Soph., Dean Hallman, Frosh, Ralph Pisano, Soph., Kenny Morris, Jr., and Ward Ogden, Frosh, Pat Meyer was named team Captain and Robert Aul received the Most Improved Award. They lost their first game of the season against a tall and experienced Mingus team, and then won their 3 games before the Christmas break. After the month long break, the girls lost to Ajo before Conference Games began. During these league games, Buckeye beat Lake Havasu, Independence, Gerard, and Peoria twice, but lost to a very talented Kingman team. The team leader in scoring, rebounding, and steals was sophomore Debra Wilson, with Sara Meck, a freshman, close behind. Tony Eagar fMgr.j BOYS VARSITY BASKETB LL The Buckeye Hawk Varsity Basketball team finished their season with a .500 mark by compiling a win! loss record of 9 wins and 9 losses. The Hawks started the season strong as they defeated the Mingus Marauders at Mingus and also downed the Red Reaiders from Ajo. On December I 6, the Hawks traveled to the Wickenburg Tournament and came out of the tourney with a 3rd place trophy as they defeated the Phoenix Indians 69 - 32, but then they were handed their tirst loss of the season by Maricopa as they were downed 60 - 58. After the loss to Maricopa the Hawks faced the Wickenburg Wranglers who they defeated for a 3rd place trophy. The Hawks started the new year right! On January 4 they traveled to Dysart to face the Demons and the Hawks downed them 59 - 33, and on January 7 the Hawks faces Ajo and again soundly defeated the Red Raiders 63 - 3 l. The Ha wks were looking good at this point of the season but then came the conference schedule and the Ha wks lost 4 straight games to the likes of Lake Ha vasu, Independence, Gerard and the Panthers of Peoria. On January 29 the Ha wks got back on the winning track as they downed the Bulldogs of Kingman 53 - 50, but their disaster struck again as the Hawks were put down 3 straight times by Dysart 63 - 60, then by Independence and Gerard. The last three games of the year came as the Hawks defeated Kingman 66 - 6 I and ousted the Peoria Panthers 6 7 - 55 and then were beaten in their final game by Lake Havasu 47 - 36. I The Hawks this year were coached by Mr. Randy Spillsbury who became the Head Basketball Coach this year. The Ha wks three leading scorers were Joe Wallace who hit for 229 points and l02 rebounds. Pat Meyer had 20l points and I 20 boards and Rober LaFevers contributed I5 8 points and I I0 rebounds. The remainder of the Hawk roster consisted of Gary McCulIey who had 55 rebounds. The team Hnished 2nd in Class AA Central Division. The Hawks qualifed I I wrestlers for the State Tournament. They had 2 Division Champions, I second place, 7 third places and one took 4th place. The Ha wks were an inexperienced team to start with only 3 wrestlers with previous varsity experience. The rest of the team had very little or not any experience on the varsity level. The team showed steady improvement as the season progressed. Before Christmas, the team lost 3 of their first 4 Dual Meet Matches. After Christmas, the team won 3 of their last 4 matches. The Ha wks efforts were led by four seniors. They were Tim Kirkpatrick, Jim Brown, Joe Guajardo, and Matt De5hazo. The Ha wks Hnished the season with 32 wrestlers. Buckeye will lose 7 wrestlers to graduation this year. It will be difficult to replace wrestlers such as Kirkpatrick. Brown. and others, however, there are 9 good varsity Iettermen that will be returning next year. Also, there are some good prospects from the Junior Varsity squad that had a 7-2 Dual Record this year.
