'W 'Nth CROSS COUNTRY RUN GOOD SEASON Cross Country Coach Bart Mitchell is proud of those students who came out for the team and finished the season. Cross Country is a difficult sport to en- courage participants to come out for be- cause there is so much work involved. Many people do not realize that there were some 250-300 miles run during the season. averaging 35-40 miles a week. This being the first year that girls have been a part of the team, Coach Mitchell was glad to have the three that he had: Gay Carey, Diane Doster, and Mary Shepard. Next year he hopes to have at least five girls out so he can have a full team. thus being able to participate more and even go on to state where only teams compete. At the Invitation held at Gilbert. Novem- ber 1st, the team put on a strong show- ing finishing 6th out of 20 teams with Bisbee being the only A school to beat them. All of the others were AA or AAA. At this meet they beat teams they had previously lost to: Ajo, Cactus. Indepen- dence and Parker. Individually for the Varsity Squad. Jon Flannery proved to be the team leader and best runner. always coming in lst for the Hawks. His first time of the sea- son was 19:01 and his last time, due to much hard work. was 15:45. First time for Robert Mendoza was 19:53 and his last 16:29. First time for Todd Ellsworth was 20:43 and his last was 16:56. First time for Allen Henry was 22:02 and his last was 16:02. First time for Pete Shepard was 21:33 and his last was 17:50. First time for Pat Meyer was 17:16 and his last was 22:29. Due to a football injury Colt Musgrave came out for the team after 6 meets. He proved to be the second strongest run- ner with his first time being 19:40 and his last 16:22. Divisionals went as Coach Mitchell had predicted: Phx. Indian first with 30 points. Parker second with 57 points and Buckeye third with 87 points. The Individual Meet Winner was Brad Os- wood with 16:32. Jon Flannery came in first for the Hawks in 8th place with a time of 18:02. At the State Cross Country meet the Hawks took llth place out of 16 teams. Jon Flannery was the first one coming in for the Hawks in 44th out of 104 run- ners. The Cross Country Team and their Coach, Bart Mitchell. should be com- mended for the great effort which they have put forth this season. Their inter- est and their desire to excel made this an overall very successful year.
