V BUCKEYE UNION HIGH SCHOGL f BUCKEYE, ARIZONA I LQSIE' CDG EWS IT TOGETHER Yes! We were all in it together! The last ofthe 70's! As the dawn of a new tomorrow beckons, we stop and think about the good things we shared. Even after the last bell has rung and the books are put away, we know we have a lot more to learn about one another - and about ourselves. Maybe this is the last of the 70's - but weren't they great! f MR. CHESTER D. MCNABB Buckeye Union High School Superintendent MR. EVERETT E. MYERS, JR. MR. ROBERT W. CHARMAN MR. ROBERT L. It was a tough year for the Buckeye Hawks and Coach Jim Schneider. Buckeye's only victory came in third game of the season against the Dysart Demons. The Buckeye Hawks totally dominated every phase of the game in route to a 22-0 victory. The Buckeye Hawks played great at times against Collidge, Santa Cruz, and Independence, but unfortunately just could not get it together for the whole season. Next year the Hawks have no where to go but up. So look out! Winning 4 of the last 6 ball games, the Hawks battled their way into the State Cham- pionship Finals. The Hawks de- feated Ajo and Coolidge in the Divisonal Tournament to gain the number three seed from the Cen- tral A Divison. Playing the best basketball of the season, the varsi- ty knocked off favored Bisbee 75 - 59 in the opening round of the State Tournament Playoffs. This paired the Hawks with Parker, the number one ranked Class A Team most of the season and a team that had beaten Buckeye twice before. With an outstanding defensive effort, the Hawks were victorious in a runaway 60 - 41. This sent the Buckeye Hawks into the final game of the year against a strong and talented Willcox Team. Wllcox shot a blistering 50921 from the field to Buckeye's 4011 to take the State Champion- ship 81 - 60. The Hawks finished the year as the State Champion Runners-Up with a record of 13 - 10. Leading the varsity in scoring were Bill Kerr fl7.73, Pike Smith fl5.93, and Mark Sanders 03.43. Tops in assists were Bill Kerr C793, Pike Smith 1533, and Rick Napolitano 3 I343. Although many girls were qualified for awards and the awards were limited, the few that received them were: Most Valuable Player - Trenda Cone, Most Improved - Kate Burton, Most Dependable - Kerry Tyree, and Honorable Team Captain - Kerry Gladden. Next year many valuable players will be gone due to graduation, however, Miss Jurn, the Coach, feels that the team will not become discouraged but will work harder and become stronger. Miss Jurn's overall outlook is opti- mistic and she feels that her team was superb. Although the Junior Varsity Volleyball Team was young and inexperienced, they did an excellent job! Jackie Patterson, Terri LaF- evers and Michelle Dominy did a great job with leadership and promoting team spirit. The team got down to work during the second semester and used their sets and spike combi- nations continually. The Hawks opened their season with a win over Tolleson but were unable to win another meet until late in the season when they defeated Independence. The team, however, showed steady improvement throughout the season and closed the year by placing 2nd in the Divisonal Meet behind Phoenix Indian School and then went on to a 7th place finish in the Class A State meet held at Estrella Park. The team was led by Junior Scott Jones, Sophomore Jon Flannery and Freshmen Gilbert Clemente and Kyle West. Only two seniors, Bill Carnett and Matt Martin, contributed to the scoring consistantly during the season. With the loss of only two seniors and the help of some good young runners from the Junior Varsity, the Hawks should be one of the stronger Class A teams next year. The team placed 3rd in the tough Class A Central Division and qualified 9 of 13 wrestlers for the State Tournament. The results were a big improvement for the 2-6 rebuilding season of 1977-1978. Injuries andfor sickness of four quality wrestlers kept the Hawks from having, undoubtedly, a great season. The Hawk's efforts were led this year by five seniors, Eric Swensen, Doug Russell, Paul Patterson, David Hawley, and Larry Benson. Eric Swensen wrestled in the 191 pound wt. class and had a 17-9-0 dual meet record. He took 2nd place in Central Division and qualified for State. Eric was a team Co-Captain. Doug Russell wrestled in the 145 pound wt. Class and had a 10-9-0 record. He placed 2nd in Division and qualified for State. This was Doug's first year to wrestle. TOM COLE Paul Patterson wrestled in the unlimited wt. class and had a 20-7-0 record. Paul won the Class A Central Division Championship then went on to place 4th in the State. Patterson was chosen the Hawk's Outstanding Wrestler at the Awards Assembly for winter sports. David Hawley wrestled in the 155 pound wt. class. David received an injury just before the Division Tournament and he did not get an opportu- nity to qualify for state. Larry Benson wrestled in the 179 pound wt. class and had a 15-7-0 record. Larry became ill at the Division Tournament and was unable to qualify for State. This was most unfortunate as he had previosu victories over 3 of the 4 State qualifiers from Central Division. Larry was also a team Co- Captain. ln addition to the above 5 Seniors, there were seven other wrestlers that ERIC SWENSEN were outstanding: John Gillihan, a Junior, wrestled in the 132 pound wt. class. He placed 4th in Division and 4th in the State Tournament. Jesse David, a Junior, wrestled in the 155 pound wt. class and placed 2nd in Division, qualifying for State. Craig Schindler, a Junior, wrestled in the 138 pound wt. class. He receivd an injury, therefore could not qualify for State. This was most unfortunate as Craig had the best overall record 13-4-0 of any Hawk Wrestler this year. Ken Stanberry, a Junior, wrestled in the 167 pound wt. class and placed 4th in the Division, qualifying for State. Colt Musgrave, a Sophomore, wrestled in the 138 pound wt. class and placed 4th in Division, qualifying for State. Th Steve Frank Cole, a Sophomore, wrestled in the 112 pound wt. class. He took 3rd in Division and qualified for State. Steve Ganley, only a Freshman, wrestled in the 119 pound wt. class. He won 3rd place in Division and qualified for State. The team finished the season with 36 wrestlers. Eleven of these young men received certificates of participation and earned points toward a Varsity letter. Most of these wrestled on the Junior Varsity team which finished the season with a 7-0-0 record. However, several got some varsity exper- ience. ln any case, they gained valuable experience and should be serious challengers for Varsity next year. COACH: MR.
