Bolden VARSITY FOOTB LL The Buckeye Hawks, ended their season with three wins and six losses. ln their final game of the season with Bourgade the Hawks opened up an offensive display which kept the home crowd on the edge of their seats and claimed a 24-22 victory over the Eagles. This was a great game for the Hawks judging by their inspirational and enthusiastic performance. lt was a sweet victory after suffering six defeats following two promising opening wins which got the season underway back in early September. A different Buckeye team was now on the Olsen Field turf than had been seen earlier, The change was remarkable and Coach Jim Schneider deserves all the credit. Although it wasn't a good season it docs become the training ground for next years team which will be playing Class A. Twentynine points from Rick Andrade and thirty from Brad Mihalek enabled Bourgade to keep the lead throughout the second half. Pike Smith led Buckeye scoring with 13 points, followed by Bill Kerr with 12, Garye LaFevers with 9, and Fred Franco with 8. Mark Sanders lied Buckeye rebounding with 10 boards and Garye LaFevers pulled own 8. The Junior Varsity squad ended the year on a winning note, thanks to the free-throw shooting of Russell Colville and the rebounding of Curtis Kennedy. The score against Bourgade ended at 41-40. The Cross Country Team closed their season at Papago Park in the Divisional Playoffs. Buckeye placed 5th, just barely missing the top four teams going to State. Our top five runners were Scott Jones 12th, Albert Kent 17th, Gilbert Macias 25th, Bill Carnett 26th, and John Johnson 27th. The team had really improved as the season pro- gressed. The team should be in top shape for the 1978 season, as they are only losing Albert Kent, Senior. Special congratulations go to Albert Kent, Senior, and Scott Jones Sophomore, who did a fine job this year and proved to be BUHS best runner. The biggest problem faced this season was to replace 10 of 13 varsity wrestlers lost from the 1976-77 team due to graduation andfor injuries. The 1976-77 team went 7-1 in dual competition and the loss of so many quality wrestlers would be a tremendous handicap to any team. Buckeye was no exception. The Hawks efforts were led this year by four seniorsg Albert Kent, Ricky Meeks, Russell Henry, and Tim Richline. These four provided leadership all year by their example. They worked hard all along in practice and in building up a winning individual record. Albert Kent wrestled in the 105 lb. wt. class and had a 13-10-0 individual record. He was also one of the Team Cap- tains. Tim Richline wrestled in the 155 lb. wt. class and had a 14-11-0 individual record. Tim also won 3rd place in Class AA Central Division and qualified for the State Tournament. Russell Henry wrestled in the unlimited wt. class and had a 12-7-0 individual record. He was also a Team Captain. Ricky Meeks, another Team Captain, wrestled in the 145 lb. wt. class and had a 17-14-0 individual record. Ricky took 3rd place in the Class AA Central Division and qualified for the State Tournament. Meeks wrestled for four years in high school and was one of the most competitive athletes anywhere. Two other Hawk wrestlers qualified for the State Tournament. They were Craig Schindler and Ken Parker. Schind- ler, wrestling in the 132 lb. wt., class, took 3rd and Parker, wrestling in the 179 lb. wt. class, took 2nd in the Class AA Central Division. Both boys are only sophomores and should be outstanding wrestlers the next two years. The team finished the season with 37 wrestlers. Twenty-one of these young men received certificates of participation and earned points toward a varsity letter. Most of these wrestled on the J .V. team but several got to wrestle some var- sity matches. In any case, they gained valuable experience and should be challengers for the varsity next year. The J .V. team had a 6-2 dual meet record this season. The Hawks will lose four good wrestlers this year to graduation. However, nine of thirteen experienced regulars will be back and Buckeye should be one of the best teams in the State.
