BUCKEYE UNION HIGH SCHOOL ' BACKGROUND An Ohion, M. M . Jackson, along with two other natives of that state, built one of Arizona's first modern -day irrigation canals southwest of Phoenix in the 188 0's, and named it Buckeye Canal for his home state. The townsite laid out in the middle of this fertile agricultural land in 1889 at first was called Sydney after an Ohio town of the same year. The community was incorporated as Buckeye in 1931. Buckeye is situated 35 miles from Phoenix in a broad valley between the White Tank Mountains on the north and the Maricopa Mountains to the south and is known as the Western Gateway to the Valley of the Sun. The first high school annual for Buckeye Union High School was published in 1925 with Norma Brown as Editor-inrChief. The name of the yearbook was El ,Ocotillo and its aim, as it is to- day, was to record the years activities for the school that will bring many happy memories in the years to come. It was only in- evitable that the first yearbook would be dedicated to its principal, Mr. Horace Kincaid. At that time the high school was located at the present Buckeye Elementary School on 6th Street. The build- ing contained eight rooms with four rooms on the south for the elementary grades and four rooms on the north for the high school. The high school teaching staff consisted of the principal and four other teachers. With Cordelia and Ethel Campbell as the first two graduateshin 1921, the alumni of the school at the first year of publication of the yearbook was 23 . ln 1929 Arlington, Buckeye, Liberty and later Palo Verde united for the purpose of making an accredited high school. Ruth Fisher presently sends its students on a tuitionbasis. The doors of the New Buckeye Union High School on Eason Avenue opened on September 24, 1924 with about 100 students in enrollment and Mr. Herschel Hooper as its principal . ln 1929 the name of the yearbook was changed to The Buckeye and it wasn't until 1935 that the student body gathered on the east side of the campus and. changed the name of the yearbook to The Falcon , todistinguish it from the school newspaper The Hawk . ln 1925 the athletic teams were known as the Wildcats , laterthey became the Buckeyes , and finally, in 1929 the mascot became the Hawks'l Farsighted planning 1931 provided teniacres of ground and a building that grew gracefully as the additions of a Study Hall- 1 Library, auditorium, classrooms, and a gymnasium were made to the existing A Building which had ended at the double doors of A buildingg ' ' A Mr. Herschel Hooper ended his 20 year principalship at B.U.H.S. with the addition of B wing and the moving of the football sta- dium to its present location. Filling the vacancy left by Mr. Hooper was Mr. Alvin Ellis who stayed until his untimely death in the. spring of 1959. Mr. William lBillJ Olsen, the associate principal, finished off the school year Under Principal Ellis the old gymnasium was torn down, the front part of the shop area was if mm built, and the baseball field at the Buckeye Park was finished. The Homecoming Dance in 1957 was held inthe newly completed gymnasium. ' 1 ' 1 I A , ' 1. W . 'fn' 1. W in 1'5 1 , , ' 1 , yi T , wi . 1, ,.. V ., .. M- . WM., iW ' ri A W T ,., l
