Jackson, along with two other natives of that state, built one of Arizona's first modern -day irrigation canals southwest of Phoenix in the 188 0's, and named it Buckeye Canal for his home state. The townsite laid out in the middle of this fertile agricultural land in 1889 at first was called Sydney after an Ohio town of the same year. The community was incorporated as Buckeye in 1931. Buckeye is situated 35 miles from Phoenix in a broad valley between the White Tank Mountains on the north and the Maricopa Mountains to the south and is known as the Western Gateway to the Valley of the Sun. The first high school annual for Buckeye Union High School was published in 1925 with Norma Brown as Editor-inrChief. The name of the yearbook was El ,Ocotillo and its aim, as it is to- day, was to record the years activities for the school that will bring many happy memories in the years to come. It was only in- evitable that the first yearbook would be dedicated to its principal, Mr. Horace Kincaid. At that time the high school was located at the present Buckeye Elementary School on 6th Street. The build- ing contained eight rooms with four rooms on the south for the elementary grades and four rooms on the north for the high school. The high school teaching staff consisted of the principal and four other teachers. With Cordelia and Ethel Campbell as the first two graduateshin 1921, the alumni of the school at the first year of publication of the yearbook was 23 . ln 1929 Arlington, Buckeye, Liberty and later Palo Verde united for the purpose of making an accredited high school. Ruth Fisher presently sends its students on a tuitionbasis. The doors of the New Buckeye Union High School on Eason Avenue opened on September 24, 1924 with about 100 students in enrollment and Mr. Herschel Hooper as its principal . ln 1929 the name of the yearbook was changed to The Buckeye and it wasn't until 1935 that the student body gathered on the east side of the campus and. changed the name of the yearbook to The Falcon , todistinguish it from the school newspaper The Hawk . ln 1925 the athletic teams were known as the Wildcats , laterthey became the Buckeyes , and finally, in 1929 the mascot became the Hawks'l Farsighted planning 1931 provided teniacres of ground and a building that grew gracefully as the additions of a Study Hall- 1 Library, auditorium, classrooms, and a gymnasium were made to the existing A Building which had ended at the double doors of A buildingg ' ' A Mr. Herschel Hooper ended his 20 year principalship at B.U.H.S. with the addition of B wing and the moving of the football sta- dium to its present location. Filling the vacancy left by Mr. Hooper was Mr. Alvin Ellis who stayed until his untimely death in the. spring of 1959. Mr. William lBillJ Olsen, the associate principal, finished off the school year Under Principal Ellis the old gymnasium was torn down, the front part of the shop area was if mm built, and the baseball field at the Buckeye Park was finished. The Homecoming Dance in 1957 was held inthe newly completed gymnasium. ' 1 ' 1 I A , ' 1. W . 'fn' 1. W in 1'5 1 , , ' 1 , yi T , wi . 1, ,.. V ., .. M- . WM., iW ' ri A W T ,., l v . The Cooperative Education concept goes beyond the four walls of the classroom and reaches out into the real, everyday world of work where the student can see and hear and experience first- hand many ofthe conditions he has read and heard about for so long in school . The concept is built around an organized system ofco- operation between student, school, and em- ployer. iris A ' C . g . nr g . Q ff LE. X 'gl ' Y, 'r ' ' . . ' , -A-f T A ii . STUDE T COUNCIL The Student Council is made up of the Associated Student Officers and representatives from each class and authorized club in the school. lt is through this organization that requests are made by clubs and classes for all activities, and take up matters relating to student problems arising in the school. The B.U .H .S. Council is a member of the Arizona Associated Student Council and a member of the National Association of Student Councils. This year the Student Council re-introduced Freshman Day and everyone seemed to enjoy participating. The Homecom- ing Bonfire was a tremendous success since the fire was started before the crowd got there. The annual Christmas Food Drive was held again this year and the food was distributed by the coun- cil members. Some of the rooms were missing the American Flag and the Council made a survey in order to purchase flags for them. Perhaps the most important project for the council was the forming of the T. A. S. C. which is Teacher, Administrator, Student Committee. This Com- mittee is composed of lVlr. lVlcNabb, Nlr. Charman, lVlr. Sweeney, IVlrs. Sandberg, lVlr. lVlcCormick, Ken Porter, Linda Vose, Lori Wilson, Tim Villa, Sande Pierce, and K. Hunter. The committee tries to bring ideas together to improve the school atmosphere. They met every other Wednesday and discussed problems and ideas regarding the school community. f iff f - f 'we-1 XX xl .- ,ll I' . F. , Y, ,a - . ,V In . V .I- NN 2 . at .. N.. . 10, , , ' , '. The duties of Pep Club are to advertise the games and encourage student attendance. This is done by preparing posters and devel- oping pep assemblies which seem to be the outlet for school spirit. Under the leadership of its officers the club works after school in planning their activities. The club is spon- sored by lVlr. John Stutzman. A new con- stitution was written this year and an exec- utive board of five to seven officers was created. The Pep Club float won second place at the Homecoming Parade. 113 President Julie Lanford, Secretary Lora Jarnagin, Vice President Cheryl Davis, Treasurer Mary Smith f This organization is open to all girls in I the school who are interested in combining -' fun and service to the school. Published on a frequent basis, the newspaper contains regular news, features, interviews of students and staff, and entertainment material designed to make each student feel more a part of the student body and high school family. Hawk staff members mainly come from the Journalism Classes, but any student is welcome to be- come a staff member upon demonstration of reliability and desire to find news. The Graphic Arts Department renders an invaluable portion of its time to the mechanical aspect of newspaper publishing, much in the same way a print shop co-operates with an editorial staff of any regular city news- paper. The HAWK hopes to publish more and more frequently as the next few years go by, providing more and better service to the readers. In years to come, the current issues of the Hawk will be valuable momentos of the past, as well as reliable historical source of student life in the 70's. 122 Layout Artist Tom Cambron, Chief Printer Larry Franco, Editor Genell Allen, Sports Editor John Masengale, Staff Artist Brian DeMuth. These were to be ready by Baseball Season. The other project was a bathroom and storage closet in one of the houses owned by the school. These projects give the students an opportunity to do block work, cement work, stucco, plumbing, roofing, and painting. The group is sponsored by Mr. Hank Newberry. The Future Homemakers of America is a national organization through which members develop as in- dividuals by taking responsibility for the youth planned and youth directed activities that extend beyond the classroom Home Economics Education program. This year the organization chose to decorate the Library for Christmas as a district meeting was held here with 200 girls participating. Genell Allen was chosen leader after the meeting. Two projects were planned for Easter. One was to paint Buckeye Senior-Citizens Hall and also a party for one of the rest homes in the Phoenix Area. It is indeed a satisfying feeling that the young people take interest in the older generation. The club also attended the State Meeting which was held in Tempe on March 22 84 23. Along the way the Matmen compiled a 6-2 Dual Meet Record. Both losses came at the hands of State Champions, Dysart. Success this year was due to good leadership and a great team effort. Leading the team x was the Outstanding Wrestler, Two-time State Champion, Senior Frank Drew. Frank finished the season with a 28-1 record. ln four years of wrestling, Drew has an amazing 68-15-1 Won-Loss-Tie record . Another team leader was Senior John Masengale. John received the Most Improved Award by running up a 24-3 Won-Loss record . He also won the State Championship in the 1554? weight class. Several other Hawk wrestlers gave out- standing performances this season. Sen- ior Ernie Villa won the Class A West Division Championship in the 1912? weight class. Ernie also took 4th place in the State Tournament. Junior Gary Benson and Sophomore Reuben Wood both took 3rd place in the State. Senior Eddie Hamilton and Sophomore Domingo Perez both placed 4th in the State Tour- nament. This years' team will lose 5 good wres- tlers to graduation. lt will be extremely difficult to replace the likes of Frank Drew, John Masengale, Ernie Villa, Eddie Hamilton, Jim Weatherford, anc David Harris. However, Benson, Huff, and Leonard Masengale along with Sophomores Curtis Mason, Rueben Wood, and Domingo Perez will be the main nucleus of the Varsity next year. With good prospects up from the Junior Varsity Squad Cwhich had a 7-1 Dual Meet Recordl the HAWKS should be very respectable again next year.
