THE BUCK AT WORK

Page 31 text:

BUCK SAVES ALA Just prior to dawn on the morning of October 29, 1956, some fifty miles at sea off Hong Kong the BUCK in company with DESDIV 71, sighted a red glow on the horizon. Upon altering course to investigate, the Norwegian merchant- man ALA was discovered to be ablaze and abandoned. The passengers and crew had taken to the life boats to escape their floating inferno. The BUCK and USS LOFBERG (DD 759) went alongside the ALA to fight the fires while the USS THOMASON (DD 760 and USS BOLE (DD 755) searched the area for survivors. After bringing the fires under control and cooling the top side area with their hoses, the BUCK and USS LOFBERG sent fire fighting parties aboard the ALA to subdue the fires in the engine room. The USS BOLE and USS THOMASON proceeded to Hong Kong with the survivors while the BUCK and USS LOFBERG continued to battle the blaze for a period of seven hours before being relieved by a Hong Kong fire boat and two tugs. For their courageous assistance without regard for personal safety, the officers and men of the BUCK were warmly com.mended by Hong Kong ' s Norwegian Consulate and by Commander Seventh Fleet. 27
