I Ml I t i i € FRONT ROW, L. TO R.: LTJG Simmons, Ulrich, Ruffino, Burgin, B., Walsh .Ellis, Sheppaid, Chief Swan, LTIG Witucki. SECOND ROW: While, Wilhelm, Stratton, Hosteller, Pochop, Perltuen, D ' Aniollel. There is really very little the R Division is not called on to do in keeping the BUCK mechanically shipshape. Operating moves, replacing fuses and controlling damage inflicted upon the ship are only a few of the varied R Division jobs. The electrical group is divided into the Electricians and the I. C. Electricians. The Electricians are responsible for upkeep of all motors, generators, and electrical power distribution sys- tems on the ship. The I.C. Electricians maintain the sound systems on board while always keeping an eye on the gyro and the DRT. To the auxiliary group fall such duties as maintaining the boat engine, the emergency diesels, the reefer system, the H.P. air compressor and emergency fire fighting pumps. The third group making up the R Division are the Ship- fitters. Here we have Pipefitters, Metalsmiths and Damage Con- trolmen. Pipe fitters are concerned with all hull piping systems. The Metalsmith has his problem with the ship ' s welding and metal repairs. In his spare time he fixes lockers and works on the latest habitability projects. The Damage Controlman supervises the maintenance of all water tight closures and the ship ' s fire fighting and damage control equipment. 15

Mo m I 11 E and R divisions make up the engineering department. The Boilermen and machinist mates of E division are in charge of and operate the main engines. Working with 600 p.s.i. of steam pressure and, at times, with temperatures of 850° F., they do an outstanding job in keeping the screws turning. BUCK has never missed an opera- tional commitment due to eng ineer- ing failure. The enginemen, pipefit- ters, metalsmiths, damage control- men, machinery repairmen, elec- tricians, and interior communica- tions electricicms of R division are the men who keep the ship sea- worthy in addition to augmenting the E division watches. Electrical machinery, lighting, laundry equip- ment, steering gear, metalwork and plumbing are some of the responsi- bilities of R division. ■ ' ' is FRONT ROW, L. TO R.: Marquez.
