DIV The Gunnery Department is comprised of the First, Second and Third Divisions consisting of Bos ' n Mates, Gunners Mates, Torpedomen, Fire Controlmen and Sonarmen. It was the job of the Bos ' n Mates to battle rust and corrosion and to be ready for any of the numerous special details that were called away at any hour of the day or night. Gunners Mates and Torpedomen spent many hours in keeping our weapons ready for action, and when the time came they teamed up with the Fire Control- men, who aim the guns, to make our ship ready for action at a moment ' s notice. And then there were the Sonarmen whose job it was to listen and to make sure that the waters we traveled were safe below. FRONT ROW, L. TO R.: McKinney, Prilchard, Smith, Tarr, Tipp, Yates, Ens. The 2ND Division ' s battle over the endless life of rust begins aft of the quarterdeck and continues until reach the stern. Delegated the responsibility of maintaining these spaces are the boatswain ' s mates of the 2ND Division led by LIEDERBACH, BM2. His specialty is deck and marlinspike seamanship. He works with boats, lines, and ground tackle using many skills common to the seaman of old. The roped off areas of the 2ND Division attest to the dili- gence with which they attack the problem of rust. FRONT ROW, L. TO R.: Noble, Crowder, Ens. Booth, Magness, Liederbach. The Supply Department aboard any ship does a big job and even more so aboard a destroyer. Its tasks are many and var- ied and are composed of commissary, ship ' s service, store- keeping, stewards, medical and disbursing. How ' s that cold coming along? Our small, but well equipped sickbay, provides treatment for common aches and pains and for all emergencies. If you want to make out an allot- ment, a disbursing clerk at the supply office takes care of you. Besides payday, there ' s nothing like chowdown to get the crew up and around. Few give any attention to the amount of preparation that goes into their meals; the planned, well-bal- anced diets of the weekly menu. It is no small task to care for the needs of a small city such as the BUCK. The galley is constantly in operation, as is the washing machine, and everyone knows that the barber is kept busy snipping regularly also. So next time you need a friend, check the S Division and you will be well taken care of. 11
