In Memoriam Four Years---In that short period of time many of our cherished memories rest---happy thoughts of making new friends, singing the alma mater, and cheering at football games. Here and there a sad remembrance creeps into the recollection of those four years. The sudden death of one of our own faculty mem- bers came as a great shock to all of us. We could- n't imagine starting school in September and not finding him here. His reassuring smile and confi- dence in the good judgement of youth will always be remembered. He was our good friend and cap- able advisor. We shall never forget Mr. Clifford Wertz. 22 701 642 iv K ill! Jr. Y-Teens, under the able direction of Deedee Ryan, helped plan and decorate for the King B dance, Feb. 11. Trying to get just the right shade for that poster are Deedee, Mary Fran Elwood, Libby Neiman, Lou Ann Leedem, Judy Connor, and Judy Bair. Posters contribute to the success of a dance too, testify John Emanuel, Laurice Karm, Barbara Fox, Carol Platts, Dona Penner, and Shirley Ekus. As a result of the joint efforts of Jr. and Sr. Y-Teens, Buchtel students have many happy memories of the 1950 King B. dance. 1.7 N4 Nm. W Anyone can see why the 1950 King B court sets feminine hearts a flutter' King Don Miller and his eleven knights were honored at the highly successful Y Teen dance this year by being presented at intermission to the Buchtel subyects These boys represent the cream of the crop of Buchtel masculinity, and are elected by their respective classes The members of the court are John Spiegel, first knight Don Miller, King B Chris Sar vis Vic Tsaloff Bob Phelps, Jim Usner Don Sommer Hale Schroer Gary Kepler Jack McCracken Dave Burnham, and John Wemgart. Zadtzelezw Ea' Duma Hamm ,ew Behind the scenes of every play you will always find plenty of work and excitement. Karen Larson and Alice Holloway, two Dramatic Club members, are busy collecting money from a group of students who are eager to see the Dramatic Club Play. Getting ready to present this play, we find Eugene Sawan and Carol Krueger applying make-up to Colleen Thigpen, while Dorothy Levering, club president is busy making up Elaine Economu. This is only one of the fine activities that the Buchtel Dramatic Club, under the inspired supervision of Miss Lucille Gustaison, has presented. The Speech Department guided by Miss Whitting ton and Mr Schifano has come in for more than its share of honors this year Our students won coiuity honors in speech work and came out m the top eight in the state Ln order to improve their speeches, the students make recordings and play them back to find any flaws. Miss Whittington, Harold Christensen, Cynthia Lennon, Eugene Sawan, Joan Emmanuel, Bert Subrin, and Charlotte Culbertson will all be in on this record. f ii. Coach Fred Cook introduced new formations and rugged training rules to the boys, who spent exhausting hours scrtmmaging in Buch- tel's back yard. The season was climaxed with Buchtel's finally losing out to South High for the City Championship. Although Captain Don Miller and star Bob Phelps will not return to the squad in the fall Coach Cook is already working hard in pre- paration for another successful season. This year marked the fourth season since the inauguration of the freshmen football program at Buchtel. No one can underestimate the importance or value of this training of our freshmen, since they are the future ma- terial for the varsity squad. Nor can anyone appreciate the time and sincere effort these boys and their coaches put forth every night without the reward of publicity or glory. This year the freshmen team was coached by Jim Mallo, assisted by ex Buchtel footballers Jim Herovis and A1 Barnes. FRE SHMEN GRIDDERS Back Row: Mr. Mallo, K. Pritchard, D. Dollins, T. Becker, B. John Spiegel, only veteran spare returning to the squad, made All-City forward, with Don Sommer, John Economu, and Dave Bunham receiving hon- orable mention. These Cagers won several games because of a fighting second half, and lost a few beginners because the team was being organized for their City Series Campaign. Believing in that age -old saying Upracticemakes perfect , the boys spend their spare time polishing up on all.those little tricks which make it a fascinating game. Tennis is a tiring and fast moving sport, but our team is conditioned for the rugged work out, and they prove it when playing other schools. Shown above are team members: Louie Cooper, Fred Shrank, John Bache, and Charles Stein. S ! Che oi the most lively and hard working group of students around BHS is the swimming team. Many are the hours they spend perfecting their various relays and specialized strokes at the YMCA pool. The team is under the guidance of Mr. John Van- Sickle. Buchtel has always claimed one of the outstanding swimming teams in the city, and this year's group measures up to the high standards established by their former team-mates. cvze! Driving their way across greens and fairways, the golf team set out to win fame and glory for Buchtel High School. Coach Otis Maxwell placed his hopes of winning the city series upon the shoul- ders of the following group of boys: Bill Fouse, Duke Stump, Bob Rubenstein, A1Simon, Morrie Berzon, Bob Keene, Tom Merryweather, Bill Singleton, and Bob Barkett. By Constant practice, the team has proven that golf is an up and coming Uspring sport at Buchtel. 40 my J. 1 .Jw W , , E ,PV 1 'I xf 12 55 up 52 X 5 V ,Ex y as 51 as VJXSZ.
