B'll was voted the most likely to succeed on the senior class ballot . . . which is what we are sure is a very true prediction. PEARL NIESS We hereby openly and gratefully thank and commend Pearl Niess for the untiring and invaluable help she has been to her school. Tooty has decorated and planned for just about every dance given at Buchtel for the last few years. She has also been active in Y-Teen for all of her four highschool years, having served on the cabinet since she was a freshman. Pearl plans to continue her major in decoration though she isn't sure whether at Akron U., Cleveland, or New York. May we assure you, Pearl, you'll be a success no matter what you do. IOAN VERNOTZY If you hear a loud laugh behind you, turn around and it will no doubt be Ioan Vernotzy. Ioan, pep personified, was head cheerleader and chairman of the Booster Committee. She is well known at Buchtel for her seemingly perpetual vitality and her sense of humor. Never a dull moment Vernotzy. she is known as. If she isn't jumping around somewhere, she can probably be found swooning to Gershwin music, which she loves. She likes to travel and hopes someday to see more of the world. She hopes to attend Miami University. DOT HOLLOWAY If anyone has been busy during her high school life, that girl is Dorothy Holloway. Besides securing a niche in the very high scholastic ratings, Dot has contributed her services wherever help was needed: for example . . . she has been secretary of Comwolei, and social chairman of Science club, publicity chairman of Spanish club, while she has been one of the chief poster-makers around the school. Dorothy plans on becoming an art teacher, and to prove her intentions, she will attend Miami University on the S100 scholarship she has won to that institution. Qlbfanahng Sen iam PATSY PACE When you hear the name Patsy Pace, you immediately think of music. Patsy has been making a name for himself in the field of music for twelve years. He started with the accordion when he was four and won three national cham- pionships. Since then he has taken up piano, trumpet, and clarinet. and plays them all with excellence. He leads his own orchestra and does ali of his own arranging. He even finds time to teach piano and accordion. He is planning to attend the Iuiliard School of Music in New York next year. Probably the name of Patsy Pace will continue to be connected with music for a good many years to come. DOROTHY FEIR Dorothy Feir is one of the most active members of the senior class, Not only is she president of Y-Teens, that itself a big job, but she is membership chairman of Latin Club, a member of the Science Club, service chairman of Com- wolei, a member of the Student Council, secretary of the all-city Hi-Y-Teen council, and a member of National Honor Society. She was also president of the District Iunior Red Cross. On top of all this, you know that if you ever want anything done, Dot will do it. Next fall, Dorothy is planning to attend the University of Michigan. She hopes someday to be a doctor. lf her record at Buchtel is any indication, she will be a good one. ANNE GUTH One of the well-known names around Buchtel is that or Anne Guth. She is probably best known as being editor-in- chief of the Buchtel Talon. She also planned and edited the Senior Griffin. She is a member of Y-Teens and president of the Inter-Club Council, She was Homecoming Queen in her junior year. and has been an attendant on many other courts since she was a freshman. She is also a member of National Honor Society. Anne is interested in writing and her ambition is to be a short story writer. She is crazy about cats and dogs, and can usually be seen rushing somewhere. Her being voted best liked by the members of the senior class shows pretty well what people around here think about her. , , , clluf .Anal .jejfanwnf CContinued from Page 225 -Nick Bellios wills his parking space to Ed Stansfield and his basketball management to the next fellow brave enough to take it. A , .fgflzificd 7 jooffaf ir 'A' Buchtel High School's football team went through a de- feated season in 1946. The Griffs, who had suffered the loss of several valuable players, finished the season with nothing but experience, ex- perience which will be the foundation of the team in 1947. The Griffins started off their season by playing the East Orientals in the Rubber Bowl football prevue, where they were beaten 7-0. Buchtel was next the victim of Central on September 13. losing 19-0. The following week saw the Griffs facing a power- ful Canton McKinley eleven. Again they were tripped 31-6. The Wadsworth Grizzlies rolled over Buchtel 19-0 on their home field. The Vikings spanked Buchtel 31-l3 on October 5. lt was in this game that diminutive Chuck Bowen raced ap- proximately 100 yards to score a touchdown. Wooster was next. The Griffs fell 19-13 to the Generals, although it was a close game. Playing in the mud of the Rubber Bowl on October 18, Buchtel bowed to West High 25-0. The Cowboys fast backfield was mainly responsible for the defeat. The experienced Garfield powerhouse crushed the Griffins 58-0. The Prexies later went on to become city champs. The final game saw Buchtel playing their best game of the season against Kenmore fighting them touchdown for touch- down all the way. But, the end of the game saw Kenmore the victor by a 27-19 score. Buchtel will lose several good players this year. Among them are Iim Beverly tcapt.-electl, Bob Porter, Art Weitzel, Bob Huston. Boyd Barker. Iim Mercer, Vince Del Medica, and Paul Zalenka. The gridder's banquet was held at Spindler's Inn. where letters were awarded. The Griffs will have a host of return- ing lettermen on next year's squad and should develop into a good team. 39 gaalfelgaf ir 'A' Buchtel High School's basketball squad were very success- ful in the 1946-47 season. Although Iim Beverly was the only returning letterman, the quintet quickly became an impressive basketball team. The cagers started off slowly, barely edging Hower Voca- tional 38-34 on December 6. They next faced Girard whom they trounced 47-3. In a thrilling game, fought closely all the way, the Griffs nosed out St. Vincents 41-37 on December 13. The netters suffered their initial defeat at the hands of a rangy Cleveland South quintet, losing 39-37. The Griffins toppled Youngstown North 39-33 on the Buchtel floor on De- cember 27. The Griffs were next the victors of a contest with Kenmore. tripping the Cardinals 41-22. On Ianuary 10 they whipped the East Orientals 34-24. Repeating their victory of the football season the Garfield High Prexies defeated Buchtel 54-38. However, it was a close game all the way until the final quarter. The height of the Vikings, of North. next defeated the Grifts 49-36 on Ianuary 24. On Ianuary 3, the cagers barely beat the Central Wildcats 34-33. West was the next to whip Buchtel, conquering them 34-31. 1 The quintet spanked Youngstown Rayen 41-35, but were beaten by the wide margin of 56-22 by South High School. Avenging an earlier defeat Buchtel put West out of the tour- naments by capturing them 33-26. They surged on to sink Springfield 41-21, but were dropped from further tourney com- petition when they were beaten by Barberton 24-16 in a low- scoring game. The annual banquet was held at Spindler's Inn on March 20 at which time Iim Beverly Ccaptain-electl, Bob Porter, Ierry Davis, Dick Romweber, Dick Everhard, Paul Porosky, and Bob Wilson received varsity letters. Buchtel will undoubtedly have a fine team next year. They will have the materialond experience to win with. t 40 fl-W 1 i 5 , ,N er we M, , . Running in a quadrangular meet at Firestone Park the Griiiins met Garfield, South, and Barberton: the Prexies the winners with 40 points. East High was next to defeat Buchtel. lohn Holloman, breaking the record on the Goodyear Heights Metropolitan Park course, lead the Orientals to a 16-47 victory. On October 12 the Griifins lost to North who easily copped the meet with 17 points. Coach Dave Appleby's harriers began to practice early for this spring's season. However, as the season went on the tracl-rsters were hampered by rain as were the rest oi the spring sports. They iirst met South on April ll at the Buchtel High track, where they defeated the Cavaliers 66 415-51 115. On April 23 the Grifls romped over Central and Copley in a triangular-inset held at Buchtel. The harriers rolled up 97 points, while Central had 48, and Copley 3. Weather halted a dual meet with East on May 3. How- ever, the Gritfs were leading the Orientals when bad weather intervened. Saturday night, May 10, found Buchtel at the Canton Mc- Kinley relays. The Griffs copped thirteen points, to gain ninth position by placing several men. East High School won the meet with 37Vz points. The harriers doing a lion's share ol the work are Art Weitzel, Bob Porter, Bob White, Iim Shaw, Earl Tate, Iohn Friess. and Iack Usner. Bob Phelps proved to be the surprise oi the season. Phelps is pole-vaulting just short ot the recora and is only a freshman. ' Bolstered by many returning letter-men the Grills should have an excellent season next year. 'ln the city meet, North dethroning the former champion. East, outclassed its competition in an impressive win over Garfield, South, Buchtel, and Central. The Vikings tallied 32 points. In the district meet it was again the North scanties, who later went on to win the state title. Bob White placed tweny- sixth in the district meet. but it was not enough to send the Grills to Columbus. White, who scored 12 3!7 points. was elected captain oi the 1946 squad. Led by Neal Palmer, Iack Taylor, and Fred Heffner, the natators finished the 1948-47 season with an impressive string of seven victories against three defeats. Coach Iohn Van Sickle took over Mr. Milton Seitz's job after the latter retired. He is planning on having the championship for many more years to come. The tankers, after practicing since September, first met South on November 9, blasting: them 44-20. The second city meet found the Griff swimmers matched against a weak Hower opponent, whom they beat 55-6. On November 30 the natators drowned the St. Vincent's Irish 56-10 and next week romped over West High School 49-16. ' . Falls, who finished second in the city league, proved no match for the Griffs, who basted them 44-22. It was not until they traveled to Canton McKinley on Ian- uary 17, that they met with their first defeat. The powerful Bulldogs spanked the tank tearn 38-28. Again, on Ianuary 28. McKinley came to the YMCA -pool where they barely edged Buchtel , 36-30. The East High Orientals were conquered by the natators Gfy ' Sim if-M, 4 1- is 44-22 and on Ianuary 20 the Griffs were beaten by a powerful Western Reserve squad 38-28. On Saturday night, January 25, Buchtel copped the city championship by blasting Garfield 50-16. Next was the district meet at Hudson. The Griffs placed fourth and went to Columbus the next week to cop a fifth place behind Cleveland East Tech fstate-Champsl, Canton McKinley, Lakewood and Fremont with fifteen points. On February 15 the Griffs won the city meet by marking up 73 points. The Griffs placed well in two relay meets-Bowling Green Relays and Penn College Relays. Several records were broken this year by the Griff natators. Fred Heffner broke the existing league record for the 200-yard freestyle in 2:l2.1. Iack Taylor smashed the 100-yard back- stroke record by chuming the distance in 1:03.3. Heffner also broke the 100-yard freestyle record in 56.6. Two Griff relays also broke records-the 150-yard medley, of Palmer, Taylor, and Heffner, in 1:30.2, and the 200-yard freestyle relay, of Taylor. On April 18 the Grills slammed a weak West opponent 10-1. Buchtel suffered their first defeat at the hands of the East High Orientals 10-0. They retaliated by winning over Falls 5-4 in a close ball game. The Kenmore Cardinals edged the Griffs 5-4 on April 28. May 1 found Buchtel facing a highly favored Garfield op- ponent but the Griffs were leading the Prexies 4-l when rain intervened. In a return game with the Presidents Buchtel was blanked 17-1. The surprise of the season was the lanky mounder Dave Wiedie. He became one of the best pitchers in the city. Players who have clone the most to aid Buchtel in its vic- tories are Roger Taylor, Bill Hhodenbaugh, Bill Katzenmeyer, and Larry Haberman. Others include Frank Iohnson, Donald Khoenle and Norman Tresser. QW At this time the Buchtel High School golf team has won all of its matches. It seems most certain that the linksters will again cop the city championship. and possibly the dis- trict championship.
