HONG KONG l-long Kong Island is ll miles long and varies in width from 2 to 5 miles. The city of Victoria lies between rugged hills and the northern water front. Numerous bays and in- lets, as well as subtropical vegetation, make Hong Kong Island a place of great scenic beauty. I-long Kong harbor itself is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world. Hong Kong, The Pearl of the Orient was occupied by the British in 1841, and was es- tablished as free port, open to all. Hong Kong, a rest and recreation port for the Seventh Fleet, was Visted by BUCHANAN twice during our cruise. Each time tours were arranged for Aberdeen, Victoria Peak, Tiger Balm Gardens and the New Territories. I-long Kong with its beauty and intrigue held BUCHANAN sailors spell bound during each visit. The tailors of Hong Kong are known through out the world, and our men made good use of this. The Chinese people made each one of our visits warm and welcome. Memories of this port of call will live on for quite some time. ,wmgs-wp RTHS A
