UBIC BAY Subic Bay is located on the West coast of the island of Luzon approximately 35 miles North of the entrance to Manila Bay. This small bay, discovered by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, lies quietly within the dense jungle forest surroundin it g . Subic Bay is a main retreat for the ships of the Seventh Fleet while on duty in the South China sea. We of the BUCHANAN saw quite a lot of this port, whether it was returning for small iepairs or for some well earned rest and liberty. Subic Bay and its modern and fully e- quipped Naval Base afforded the crew many plleasurable hours of relaxation Many spent t eir time at the excellent beach .at Cubi Point the modern air conditioned bowling alley, the gym and weight room, the handball courts, tennis courts, library, and of course, we 1'l'lUSf not forget the organized softball games be- tween the Officers and the Crew.UA1l of these proved fun and relaxing for all. S-t1llYothGf1'S of the crew preferred the night life, Whlflh was offered at the various clubs on the Navy Base and was always at full swing in the Small town outside of the base called Olangapo. N012 all went for the night life. Also found in the town of Olangapo were many souve111IS PU1' chased by our eager American Sailors. The Filipino people are quiet and WQ11 mannered. Many friends were made in EhlS port of call, also many memories to add tO the sailor's sea stories.
