What is important is our ship and the fine men who man her. Each of us is an individual, each of us with varying drives they and motivations, yet we have learned to function as a team, we have learned to work toge h for the protection of our Country, our loved ones and . . ourselves. Within these pages 1? t G story of BUCHANAN and her crew during the months of January through August 1965 3W3Y our I-lomeport of San Diego assigned to the U. S. SEVENTH FLEET, operating in the trou G waters of the Western Pacific All . ow me to begin with the crew of this 4500 ton maii-o-WHQLILVZG are 325, 22 Officers and 303 Bluejackets. Each has his own particular responsibilities H - ever the assignment, each 'ob is ' . J important and it is necessary that each man be ablgltlox form in a Top Notch manner. This team spirit along with much hard work makeS BU the Fleet's Einest Before l o . g on to introduce you to my shipmates, let me tell you a little bit about our ship ...... ' L' ,f , f' f X , 7 fcfyiyff X 4 Our Ship . . . proud of her, you bet. She is beautiful and sleek . . no . . powerful and dependable, all those things. There Built By: TQDD SHIPYARDS CQRP. are many ways to describe this fine de- geatt1e Waehiugteu stroyer. She is something different to each ' ' man aboard. A complex city of steel Ifeel Laid: 23 Apyil 1959 powered by high pressured oil firedboilers which provide 70,000 horsepower to drive Lauueheu: 11 May 1960 her at speeds of over 30 knots and to pro- - vide enough electric power to operate her Qemmieeieueut 7 Febfuafy 1962 impressive weapons and electronic equip- ments. BUCHANAN sports the TARTAR Leugth: 437 feet anti-air -missile capable of de stroying super-sonic aircraft, as well ,as fully Bearn.: 47 feet automatic 5 guns and ASROC the most effective anti-submarine weapon. Dietuaeemeutt 4 500 teue BUCHANAN can carry out any mission as- ' signed a man-o-war. She is the most versatile of any destroyer ever built . . . Named for Captain Franklin BUCHANAN, United States Navy and Ranking Officer of the Confederate States Navy, she is the third Destroyer to bear the proud name. The first, the DD 131, distinguished herself during World War ll at ST. NAZAIRE by deliberately ramming and putting a German submarine base out of commission. The second, the DD-484, won eleven Battle Stars in the Pacific campaign and culminated her illustrious career by taking General Douglas MACARTHUR from YOKOHAMA to TOKYO BAY for the signing of the Japanese sur- render aboard the USS MISSOURI. We have a proud heritage to uphold and believe me . . . BUCHANAN and her crew can do it. Remember what lsaid before? . . . We are 325 strong and to Work best We are organized into functional groups called divisions. Though you know everyone aboard, you spend time with your division mates . . you Work together, mess to- gether, pull liberty together, and let me tell you, this sharing, day after day, the good and the bad, makes some lasting friendships. Of course, friendships transcend divisional boundaries and extend throughout the various departments in the ship . . . This small bay, discovered by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, lies quietly within the dense jungle forest surroundin it g . Subic Bay is a main retreat for the ships of the Seventh Fleet while on duty in the South China sea. We of the BUCHANAN saw quite a lot of this port, whether it was returning for small iepairs or for some well earned rest and liberty. Subic Bay and its modern and fully e- quipped Naval Base afforded the crew many plleasurable hours of relaxation Many spent t eir time at the excellent beach .at Cubi Point the modern air conditioned bowling alley, the gym and weight room, the handball courts, tennis courts, library, and of course, we 1'l'lUSf not forget the organized softball games be- tween the Officers and the Crew.UA1l of these proved fun and relaxing for all. S-t1llYothGf1'S of the crew preferred the night life, Whlflh was offered at the various clubs on the Navy Base and was always at full swing in the Small town outside of the base called Olangapo. Yokosuka flourished as the naval base of eastern Japan up to the end of World War ll and has been re- born as one of Japan's important trade and fishing port as well as a sightseeing base for the Muira Penninsula. The BUCHANAN visited this port of call three times during our deployment. During these visits sightseeing tours Where arranged to such places as Tokyo, Kamakura, and Hakone National Park. Gur cameras, which Were mostly purchased in this port, were fast at Work during our stay. Items such as china, stereo equipment, and bicycles, began to flood the ship as each crew member returned from liberty. Many fine liberty hours were enjoyed in Yokosuka from the tours to night clubs. During two of our evenings of rest, the ship held a party at the club Alliance. Entertainment, food, and refreshments were in abundance. With the gifts, fun, and memories behind We left Yokosuka on the 26th of July for the best port of all, San Diego. iifsizfazffivffm iw? gg ,ig in A 9 f? ?+?i2f5i ff HW f M Muff' pf A V if V , ,. The city of Victoria lies between rugged hills and the northern water front. Numerous bays and in- lets, as well as subtropical vegetation, make Hong Kong Island a place of great scenic beauty. I-long Kong harbor itself is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world. Hong Kong, The Pearl of the Orient was occupied by the British in 1841, and was es- tablished as free port, open to all. Hong Kong, a rest and recreation port for the Seventh Fleet, was Visted by BUCHANAN twice during our cruise. Each time tours were arranged for Aberdeen, Victoria Peak, Tiger Balm Gardens and the New Territories. I-long Kong with its beauty and intrigue held BUCHANAN sailors spell bound during each visit. The tailors of Hong Kong are known through out the world, and our men made good use of this. The Chinese people made each one of our visits warm and welcome. Memories of this port of call will live on for quite some time. ,wmgs-wp RTHS A ...aww a..,.,.,., W, gg V 7 W 3 ivan., Wham, fag Y we ' 'f 7 ,, W , f f,,wwfi 'f Q 4, ff f,4Wi'q.jf!i,,f,!',, f f ,, X , ff, 'W X f if J, , f Wifi? ,, ,M J ,J ,x Q 4. k y Q VN Z? nf X f 'f X Q ,Z ij A f - , , ff I XOSW4, .W-ffpwf A2 4 ' Q kr Q W WZ! y . wixwl-SWSWfXWNZi?z,1 , f f fv WWW, -Xi-sfgwyy f, f 0 ,,,,, ' QW .. 1 ff X, 4 'fe w Q, , 5 M .X mf Wjfff Q, iw, X' Q L X f ,VM , ,,,wf, W, Xi g ff' v C, Q ms W xx Q Q- U ,f S- w Q ff -f is fj gf ,S ff' ' K!
