A pnouo eomnmo In the years following the Korean Con- flict, the Destroyer Tender has become increasingly important as a repair facil- ity, Because of her mobility, the tender can readily be dispatched to ships Of the line thus eliminating the necessity of re- moving the ships to distance shore facil- ities. With her repair methods constant- ly improving, the tender has ventured into repair fields originally considered only for larger shore establishments. Prime examples of this advancement is BRYCE CANYON FREQUENT REBAR- RELING OF GUN MOUNTS and her unusual assistance to the fire-crippled aircraft carrier USS ORISKANY. The bulky tender has become a famil- iar sight to Navymen throughout the world. When did this service begin? What ship of the line first carried AD onto the seas ? The first ship repair facility was the USS BLACK HAWK QAD- 91. Assigned as a tender and flagship to the Mine Force, BLACK HAWK departed in June 1918, to take station at Inverness, Scotland. She returned to New York, in November 1919, and served as flagship and tender for the Atlantic Fleet destroy- ers in reserve at Philadelphia. After the installment of a torpedo workshop and other equipment, she was designated a destroyer tender QAD-91 in November 1920, and reported as flagship of the Operative Squadron, Destroyers Flotillas Atlantic Fleet. She served mainly in Carribean and Panamanian waters until June 1922, when she left New Port via Suez Canal for the Asiatic Squadron, BLACK HAWK remained in the Far East for twenty years, during which she tend- ed ships of Destroyer Squadron FIVE and TWENTY-NINE, Q The BLACK HAWK served ships until 20 May 1946, when she headed home and decommissioning on 15fAugust 1946, the Reason lion the tenoen ,.
