Ice cream is always a kids' treat. Some made it up the brow under their own steam. Others were carried. Almost all had the hand of a Duty Daddy as they came aboard BRYCE CANYON, They were underprivileged children from Olongapo, treated to a Christ- mas party by the BRYCE CANYON'S crew, and the Duty Dads were BC personnel determined to make Christmas 66 special. It was scary for them at first - too many strange people in a strange place - but like kids everywhere, they soon lost their shyness. What's that? a boy asked pointing at an AO moored alongside BRYCE CANYON, That's an Oiler. His Dad reported. The boy nodded as if that ex- plained everything. Up and across the 02 level, down and through the machinery shops to the mess decks and fifteen minutes of self-conscious Christmas Carols that ended with the first of a half hour of cartoons that delighted the Dads as much as the children, Cake and ice cream were served after the movie and the last crumb had hardly been eaten when Santa Claus fChief Edgarj made a grand en- trance to the excited ringing of the general quarters and chemical warfare alarms. Wow! one youngster said. And that seemed to sum it up for the rest of the children. Gifts, honorary memberships to BRYCE CANYON, and a personal word from Santa were distributed to the children, That morning will never be forgotten by the guests or the Dads.
