Looking about the ship gave many their first Demonstrating the life jacket- BRYCE CANYON'S FIRST DEPENDENTS CRUISE SUCCESSFUL A soft blanket of fog gently covered the Long Beach Harbor area as the USS BRYCE CANYON silently sailed on its dependents' cruise. The large des11'oyer tender, commissioned on September 15, 1951, had never hosted its depend- ents aboard for a cruise in recent years. For the 395 dependents aboard the day unfolded many surprises. As the various demonstrations were presented the guests procured a workable knowledge of their sponsors' duties and life aboard the ship. The first demonstration of the agenda, was in reality, a common occurance to a sailor, that of getting underway. The dependents soon realized the complex operations involved in getting underway. As the ship left the security of the harbor's breakwaters, another Naval hazard crept over the happy group of visitors-seasickness. The ship's modern sickbay supplemented by a Naval Nurse quickly filled to capacity. The inflation of the life raft occupied their attention until the Drone Anti-Submarine Helicopter took to the air to capture the dependents attention. At the DASH demonstration not only dependents heeded the flight but many sailors viewed for the first time an actual flight of the Navy's newest weapon against enemy Submarines. The DASH flew to a safe distance from the ship then released a five gallon drum filled with weights into the water. As the toy appear- ing war machine performed, a narration of its capabilities was announced over the public address system. The rattle of a machine gun quickly brought the numerous dependents, who had not heard the announcement of an- other demonstration, to the siderails to observe the 50 calibre machine guns' firepower. The ship's personnel and their dependents were treated to a outstanding meal prepared by the ship's commissary personnel. After the meal's completion the guests resumed their tours and personal scanning of the ship and its workings. By this time many were tired from the climbing and descending of unfamiliar ladders, and retired to such resting areas as the library, mess decks, and various areas on the decks to complete their cruise. The destroyer tender entered the harbor and made preparations for securing to Pier 15, from which, they departed six hours previously. As the weary dependents slowly left the brows they looked back upon the day's events as a highlight of their association with the BRYCE CANYON, Among the many demonstrations given was the collapsible life raft. .il . l l x SWEET SIXTZGGD commissioning was held on board on 15 September 1966, at Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines. The Captain, and the youngest member of the crew, FA M. S. Hine, 17, cut the first slice of a large birthday cake The ceremony was held on the mess deck, and several of the ship's offi- cers and crew were present for the occasion. A special luncheon of steak and lobster preceded the cutting of the cake, and the Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Force, Pacific, area band provided music for the celebration, .
