Bnyce Canyon A0-36 The Korean conflict was responsible for the birth of the BRYCE CANYON-2, although initial construction began April 16, 1945, construc- tion was originally suspended when World War II ended. Only minor work was done from 1946 until 1950 when hostilities in Korea caused cancellation of plans to put the tender in the reserve fleet. Captain M. R. Gerlin took command and set the first watch after commissioning ceremonies on 15 September, 1950, in the Charleston QS. C.J Naval Shipyard. The Shenandoah Class D tender is named after Bryce Canyon Na- tional Park, a scenic tract of land located in the towering plateau coun- try of Southern Utah. The park is noted for its vivid colors and fantas- tically eroded terraces and pinnacles rising 800 feet above the pine cov- ered canyon floor, By a strange coincidence, both the anniversary of the USS BRYCE CANYON and the Bryce Canyon National Park fall on the same date, September 15th. The National.Park was established in 1928, and the ship was commissioned in 1950. The BRYCE CANYON began her naval career with an unusual inci- dent and a probable first in naval history. Within two months after -commissioning, the ship was transferred from the Atlantic to the Paci- fic. So sudden was the change of orders that the officers and men would have had no chance to provide their families with finances to cover transportation to the Pacific coast. For the first time in recorded naval history, a pay day was held for all hands at midnight, followed by liberty at 0100, only a few hours before sailing. During her first Far Eastern tour in 1951 and her second in 1952-53, she took part in the Korean conflict and received one star on the Korean Ribbon for Providing logistic support to the Forces Afloat in the Combat Area. She also holds the United Nations Service Ribbon. During the fiscal years 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958 and 1959, BRYCE CANYON won first place in Battle Efficiency Competition among the small Pacific Fleet destroyer tenders, making her the first ship in the United States Navy to win the Gold E , Again in 1962, she was awarded her HEII. Throughout her career the BRYCE CANYON's schedule has been a six month deployed tour followed by an eight to ten month homeport period. Whether she is in Long Beach, her homeport, or deployed in the Pacific the ship's primary mission is repair and logistic support. The repair mission is performed in 38 repair shops, so diversified, that they can handle almost any job from the minute adjustment of a stop watch to a complete main engine overhaul. The logistic supportrmission is per- formed by all of the departments in BRYCE CANYON. The Engineering Department produces steam and electrical power. The BRYCE CANYON is ,492 feet long, displaces 18, 000 tons, has one 5 f 38 gum 'mount and can comfortably accomodate '51 officers, 66 chief Petty Officers and 748 enlisted men. 1 6 ,- X , , Z, Z Z , Captain Amebeo hemay Qalvam Repomteo - Septemsen 1965 Oetacheo - manch 1967 i . s '- A .-:.:' -1-- -:s:m:.':. 1:sga.:naML.2eL4gf.4-34144, 44-.,i..,sf.,,,24 Captain ameoeo hemzy Galvani Amedeo Henry Galvani was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Looking about the ship gave many their first Demonstrating the life jacket- BRYCE CANYON'S FIRST DEPENDENTS CRUISE SUCCESSFUL A soft blanket of fog gently covered the Long Beach Harbor area as the USS BRYCE CANYON silently sailed on its dependents' cruise. The large des11'oyer tender, commissioned on September 15, 1951, had never hosted its depend- ents aboard for a cruise in recent years. For the 395 dependents aboard the day unfolded many surprises. As the various demonstrations were presented the guests procured a workable knowledge of their sponsors' duties and life aboard the ship. The first demonstration of the agenda, was in reality, a common occurance to a sailor, that of getting underway. The dependents soon realized the complex operations involved in getting underway. As the ship left the security of the harbor's breakwaters, another Naval hazard crept over the happy group of visitors-seasickness. The ship's modern sickbay supplemented by a Naval Nurse quickly filled to capacity. The inflation of the life raft occupied their attention until the Drone Anti-Submarine Helicopter took to the air to capture the dependents attention. At the DASH demonstration not only dependents heeded the flight but many sailors viewed for the first time an actual flight of the Navy's newest weapon against enemy Submarines. The DASH flew to a safe distance from the ship then released a five gallon drum filled with weights into the water. As the toy appear- ing war machine performed, a narration of its capabilities was announced over the public address system. The rattle of a machine gun quickly brought the numerous dependents, who had not heard the announcement of an- other demonstration, to the siderails to observe the 50 calibre machine guns' firepower. The ship's personnel and their dependents were treated to a outstanding meal prepared by the ship's commissary personnel. After the meal's completion the guests resumed their tours and personal scanning of the ship and its workings. By this time many were tired from the climbing and descending of unfamiliar ladders, and retired to such resting areas as the library, mess decks, and various areas on the decks to complete their cruise. The destroyer tender entered the harbor and made preparations for securing to Pier 15, from which, they departed six hours previously. As the weary dependents slowly left the brows they looked back upon the day's events as a highlight of their association with the BRYCE CANYON, Among the many demonstrations given was the collapsible life raft. With a polished comical role the producer professionally led the show from one act into another without disturb- ing the routine. With a cigar tightly clenched between his fingers, Lt. Kornberger stepped be- fore his audience and opened with a joke regarding the Navy. Then introducing the first act with another joke, the production was officially opened. As western music filtered from the loudspeaker many Coun- try and Western music addicts found it difficult to refrain from wandering thoughts of rolling green hills of home, and old fashioned hoe-downs. In the showmanship format of the old Grandpa Jones technique, the producer and master of ceremonies introduced acts for every possible taste. Ir- ,W i- m, Ice cream is always a kids' treat. Some made it up the brow under their own steam. Others were carried. Almost all had the hand of a Duty Daddy as they came aboard BRYCE CANYON, They were underprivileged children from Olongapo, treated to a Christ- mas party by the BRYCE CANYON'S crew, and the Duty Dads were BC personnel determined to make Christmas 66 special. It was scary for them at first - too many strange people in a strange place - but like kids everywhere, they soon lost their shyness. What's that? a boy asked pointing at an AO moored alongside BRYCE CANYON, That's an Oiler. His Dad reported. The boy nodded as if that ex- plained everything. Up and across the 02 level, down and through the machinery shops to the mess decks and fifteen minutes of self-conscious Christmas Carols that ended with the first of a half hour of cartoons that delighted the Dads as much as the children, Cake and ice cream were served after the movie and the last crumb had hardly been eaten when Santa Claus fChief Edgarj made a grand en- trance to the excited ringing of the general quarters and chemical warfare alarms. Wow! one youngster said. And that seemed to sum it up for the rest of the children. Gifts, honorary memberships to BRYCE CANYON, and a personal word from Santa were distributed to the children, That morning will never be forgotten by the guests or the Dads. 'A V v 9'2-'QZRM , E A pnouo eomnmo In the years following the Korean Con- flict, the Destroyer Tender has become increasingly important as a repair facil- ity, Because of her mobility, the tender can readily be dispatched to ships Of the line thus eliminating the necessity of re- moving the ships to distance shore facil- ities. With her repair methods constant- ly improving, the tender has ventured into repair fields originally considered only for larger shore establishments. Prime examples of this advancement is BRYCE CANYON FREQUENT REBAR- RELING OF GUN MOUNTS and her unusual assistance to the fire-crippled aircraft carrier USS ORISKANY. The bulky tender has become a famil- iar sight to Navymen throughout the world. When did this service begin? What ship of the line first carried AD onto the seas ? The first ship repair facility was the USS BLACK HAWK QAD- 91. Assigned as a tender and flagship to the Mine Force, BLACK HAWK departed in June 1918, to take station at Inverness, Scotland. She returned to New York, in November 1919, and served as flagship and tender for the Atlantic Fleet destroy- ers in reserve at Philadelphia. After the installment of a torpedo workshop and other equipment, she was designated a destroyer tender QAD-91 in November 1920, and reported as flagship of the Operative Squadron, Destroyers Flotillas Atlantic Fleet. She served mainly in Carribean and Panamanian waters until June 1922, when she left New Port via Suez Canal for the Asiatic Squadron, BLACK HAWK remained in the Far East for twenty years, during which she tend- ed ships of Destroyer Squadron FIVE and TWENTY-NINE, Q The BLACK HAWK served ships until 20 May 1946, when she headed home and decommissioning on 15fAugust 1946, the Reason lion the tenoen ,. As a matter of fact, no one here knows whether it has ever happened before. ' Recently, however, at Subic Bay, in the Philippines, USS BRYCE CANYON QAD-365 wrote a new page in Western Pacific history by going alongside USS ORISKANY QCVA -341. The event was occasioned by a serious fire which had broken out in ORISKANY while operating off the Vietnam coast. As soon as the ships were moored together, BRYCE CANYON'S repair personnel swarmed aboard the carrier, and commenced around- the-clock operations. First on the agenda was the immediate recharging of some 107, CO2 fire extinguishers, which had been used in fighting the blaze. At the end of six days, all repair work was completed, Every one of the seventy ventilation and heating systems, as well as all electric motors in the damaged area had been checked out and restored to order. During this period, working parties from the tender had also pitched in with ORISKANY sailors and personnel from SRF Subic, in cleaning up the fire and smoke damaged areas to make them habitable. Elsewhere aboard the tender, skilled technicians worked on countless other jobs not immediately associated with the fire damage, giving the carrier a tender availability the likes of which she had never seen. On conclusion of work, BRYCE CANYON'S modern electronic accounting machine installation tallied the results of her 6-day eEort. In all, a total of 6, 019 manhours had been expended, the equivalent of a two week availability for four destroyers. As both ships got underway at the crack of dawn on the sixth day, ORISKANY sent the following visual mes- sage to the tender: Your outstanding service and voluntary assistance in removing our scars is greatly ap- preciated. 'The willingness to work and your speed and efficiency helped u.s leave Subic Bay in outstanding shape for our transit home, Well done to all men aboard BRYCE CANYON!
