On 7 Feb. we gathered on the C. P. Deck and listened as Captain Stephen M. Archer was relieved of command of the BRYCE CA YO and Captain EH. Steinmetz became our new Skipper. Good luck Cap- tain Archer on your new assignment and welcome aboard Captain Stein- metz. We changed Command and got underway, We had to leave, we just couldn't stay. seven month cruise, thatis a darn long time, So keep the home fires burning and drop us a line. I l

All of us Were amazed at the size of the ship out of the Water. Copt. Everett H. Steinmetz Commanding Officer Catain Everett H. Steinmetz was born in Brooklyn, New York, July 22, 1913. He entered the Naval Academy in 1931 from New York State and was commissioned Ensign upon graduation in 1935. Since graduating, Captain Steinmetz has served on the U.S.S. TEXAS CBB-311 1935-1937, U.S.S. CHANDLER 1937-1938, as Com- munications Watch Officer for Battle Force U.S. Pacific Fleet 1938-1939, and aboard the U.S.S. DICKERSON 1939-1940. After completing three months of Submarine training at New London, Connecticut in 1940, he then reported aboard the Submarine U.S.S. S-1 for duty as Gunnery and Communications Officer and later became Executive Officer. Captain Steinmetz served aboard Submarines throughout World War II, and made ten war patrols. While serving as Commander of the U,S.S. CREVALLE, one of nine subs in a Wolf Pack known as HYDEMAN'S I-IELLCATSH, his mission was to penetrate the Minefields of Tsushima in the Sea of Japan. The CREVALLE accounted for the sinking of four japanese ships. Captain Steinmetz has also served as Commanding Ofhcer of the Submarine POLLACK and the Ex-German type XX-1 Submarine, U-3008, and as Commander Mine Squadron 7. Before reporting aboard the U.S.S. BRYCE CANYON CAD-365 on February 7, 1959 for duty as Commanding Officer, he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations Plans Readiness on the Staff of Com- mander Mine Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet. Captain Steinmetz holds the following campaign badges and medals: NAVY CROSS, GOLD STAR LETTER OF COMMENDATION WITH RIBBON AND COMBAT V, AMERICAN DEFENSE CSTARQ, EUROPEAN THEATER, ASIATIC PACIFIC C3 STARSD, WORLD WAR II VICTORY, KOREAN AREA, UNITED NATIONS SERVICE MEDAL, NATIONAL DEFENSE. 74a I 'H Q. , ,, ff- W film, , I' ,A!'tijf1g, film I !FU X I I 4, i 1 ard!
