PACITXC Equator. i- g% o Sedc i V E a U A T O R Greetings mates : Since I have made this cruise with you and at one time or another have visited each of your compartments and lockers, having survived the repeated sprayings which almost got me, but only dampened my spirits a little, I want to move along from page to page with you and serve as a reminder that we are insepa- rable, the Brass Canoe and I. My name ? Oh yes ... Why, it is CUCA-RACHA, of course. Your mate Cuccy Summanxf a icU Though we were delayed a few hours in getting underway due to bad weather, we put to sea in a true Navy fashion. Stopping first at PEARL HARBOR and then at GUAM, each section enjoyed liberty, and we were ready to proceed. After crossing the INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE we soon became attached to the U.S. SEVENTH FLEET, and entered SUBIC BAY, P.I. After about two weeks here, we headed for a week of R R and shopping in oriental dreamland, HONG KONG, B.C. Next, we spent a week in KAOHSIUNG, FORMOSA, before returning to MANILA and SUBIC BAY for another three weeks. Underway again, we stayed two weeks more in KAOHSIUNG before setting course for OKINAWA. After two weeks of mostly R R in BUCKNER BAY, we again set our course for that home port away from home — SUBIC BAY. After a month of routine work and spreading of goodwill, we said goodbye for the last time to SUBIC BAY and spent two days at sea before arriving at KAOHSIUNG. At last, upon leaving KAOHSIUNG, we were finally headed in the right direc- tion — toward JAPAN. After playing hide-and-seek with typhoon Ellen, we finally arrived in SASEBO about five days late. But our short stay here still will be long remembered. Once again we took to the sea, this time heading for KOBE for a few days of both work and pleasure. After being here for about two weeks the BRYCE CANYON set sail for YOKOHAMA for two more days of R R, and one last fling before setting the special sea detail and getting underway once more. This time we were HOMEWARD BOUND ! In fullfilling the primary mission of furnishing repair and logistic support to Uncle Sam ' s destroyers. The Bryce Canyon has handled over 50,000 job orders in accomplishing repairs on over 2500 ships of 55 different hull types. The Korean war was responsible for the birth of the Bryce Canyon. Initial construction began April 16, 1945 ; it was suspended at the end of W. W. II, and picked up - again when hostilities in Korea caused cancellation of plans to put the tender in the reserve fleet. The Bryce Canyon began her naval career with an unusual incident, and probably another first in naval history. Within two months after commissioning the ship was transferred from the At- lantic to the Pacific Fleet. So sudden was the change, that a pay day was held for all hands at 2400, followed by liberty at 0100, only a few hours before sailing. This trip to West Pac will be the Bryce Canyon ' s eighth deployment since commissioning. Under 9 skippers the Bryce Canyon has steamed over 110,000 miles. While visiting 21 ports in seven different countries durin her first nine years. ik.- Oufi THi Matt Our normal mission as a tender is to provide to destroyer type vessels, within the capabihties of the shops, equipment and other facihties incorporated into the design of our ship. When the exigencies of the service demand, this tender will in addition, render all available services to other types of vessels. Our reason for being Torn to, commence ships ji —• ' Sssai :7 ' J -A, ' if Quite a work load Plank owner Chief Levin and four-year men Boyer, Tompkins, and Janz. Four down one to go The best in the fleet has dene it again ! In competition with the rest of the small tenders of the Seventh Fleet, the Bryce Canyon has emerged victorious in winning the battle efficiency award for the fourth consecutive year. Even before word was received on her recent victory, the B.C. had had begun to work on the final leg of the coveted Gold E, in hope to achieve another Bryce Canyon First. COMDESFLOT ONE, RADM Glenn R. Donaho, presents the Battle Efficiency Award plaque to CAPT Stepher M. Archer, Commanding Officer. Just before deployment it was disco- vered that the B.C. had a large crack in her propeller. On February (ith we entered the yards in San Pedro to get a new one. All of us were amazed at the size of the ship out of the water. We won ' t forget the long venture down the gangway and many of us will remember always the ammo handling party and bringing the stores aboard. S ctf axcC ' PexCacC On 7 Feb. we gtithered on the C. P. Deck and listened as Captain Stephen M. Archer was relieved of command of the BRYCE CANYON and Captain E.H. Steinmetz became our new Skipper. Good luck Cap- tain Archer on your new assignment and welcome aboard Captain Stein- metz. i i. a ' ' ?-- ' We changed Command and got underway, We had to leave, we just couldn ' t stay. A seven inonth cruise, that ' s a darn long time. So keep the home fires burning and drop us a line. . .. e ' l- - ' ■., i eo 1 Capt. Everett H. Steinmetz Commanding Officer Catain Everett H.
