They come ;ailors have the same creed : inut jrv )ur. manhood, assorted size: kill as muc v dav, and t v e Sailors are found exerywhere. on the water, on the streets, in fast moving cars, movies, taverns and night I ' luhs, swinging Irom ropes and jumping through portholes. CJirls love them, soldiers hate them, cooks ignore them, and the ship protects them. All sailors are truth with their fingers crossed, beauty in their uniforms, wisdom with cigari ' tles in their socks, and the hope of a future with a girl in their arms. When you are busy, they usually follow with fantastic stories of the sea or elsewhere. When you want him to make a good impression his brain turns to jelly. or else he ' ll denv that he is in the Navv. .■ sailor is a composite. Me has the apjjctile of a balli)laycr. the digestion of a whale, the energy of a jet |)lane, the curiosity of a cat, the lungs of an auctioneer and the imagination of Walt Disney, the shyness of a ... . well, 1 guess they ' re not very shy at that. But they are as sly as a fox, and have the enthusiasm of flynamite. lie likes girls, strong drinks, comic bcioks, night clubs, movies, any tavern, water and its habitants, and mail call. He ' s not for standing watches, beans for breakfast, shining shoes, washing uniforms, or the captain. Nobody else gets so much fun out of talking weather or breezes. No one else has such small pockets with no place for poker chips, or cards, and other personal belongings. A sailor is a magical creature. You can lock him out of your home, but you can ' t lock him out of your heart. You may get him off the ship once in a while but he can ' t stay for long. You might as well give it up : he ' s your captor, your jailor and your sailor. And when you come home at night with only shattered pieces of your hopes and dreams, he can mend them like new with a letter which Ix-gins : Hi, Darling, ' ir ' prr
