Two months, 7,500 productive man hours and $ 480,000 later she left, ready for deployment to Westpac. Included among ma|or alterations and repairs accomplished was modernization of the mess hall and scullery, laundry, flog quarters and CIC ; renovation of the antisubmarine warfare repair shop and overhaul of the ship s generators. External changes included removal of all 20-mm and 40-mm gun batteries and directors and removal of about two feet from th e top of the smoke stack.

Small Pac Tender Long Beach, Calif., Aug. 15— Officers and men of the destroyer tender USS Bryce Canyon received their third con- secutive battle efficiency plaque in a ceremony aboard the vessel today. The presentation was made by Rear Admiral Richard H. Phillips, Commander Destroyer Flotilla Three, to Captain James S. Shilson, the Bryce Canyon ' s skipper. The tender received the award for placing frst among Pacific Fleet small tenders, including the USS Frontier and USS Hamul, in competition in fields of repair, operations, engineering, gunnery, supply and damage control. The winner of this competition is awarded a plaque and is authorized to display a white E on the bridge wings of the ship. For winning a third consecutive year the Bryce Canyon is authorized to display a white service stripe under the present E and hash mark and is awarded a third plaque. Admiral Phillips shifted his flag to the three E tender earlier this week while his other flagship, the Frontier, is opera- ting at sea. The Bryce Canyon served as flagship for Commander Destroyer Flotilla Three for 16 months prior to leaving Long Beach in May for a two months overhaul in San Francisco Novel Shipyord. RADM R.H.
