C'o J Of Brush High School Presents Sagebrush '83 Today well lived makes Tomorrow a Vision of Hope and Happiness PEOPLE 8 Seniors Reach Climax May 28. 1983, a day that will live in infamy for the graduat- ing senior class. This day marked the end of twelve years of school and the begin- ning of a wide spectrum of new activities. Ninety-one graduates took the giant step toward their future with Bac- calaureate Friday night and Graduation the following Sat- urday morning. Maroon and sil- ver were the colors chosen by the class for caps and gowns. Senioritis hit early for many seniors, but despite this conta- geous disease, seniors still man- aged to accomplish quite a few tasks. Float building was one of the major undertakings but proved to be a frivolous when adverse weather conditions caused the parade to be called off thus making Homecoming a rather soggy experience. State Football also proved to be a rewarding and memorable experience as the Beet-diggers took state lead by their senior players. These events helped to add color and excitement to their final year at B.H.S. PROM was the grand finale of dances at B.H.S. for the seniors and they had the opportunity to make their last debut on April 30th at a Hawaiian Fantasy which was the theme. Following tradition, the juniors sponsored PROM in honor of the seniors. Throughout the final year the class of '83 was lead by its officer team, Susanne Acosta, President; Rebecca Hunker, Vice-President, and Rosa Perez, Secretary-Treasurer. Mr. Woolley sponsored the class and helped them with many decisions concerning graduation, Susanne Acosta Margo Baker Bob Baker Mark Bass Jett Blake Penny Burham Justin Bzdek Daniel Case Don Chapman Danny Chavez Mary Jane Christensen Amy Cook Sheryl Coughlin Brent Crabb David Crouch John Dalton Kathy DeLaFuente Carolyn Dickerson 9 10 Rhonda Doan Pat Edson Tammy Edwards Sandra Ewert Felix Flores Mary Ford Cara Frazier Denise Gish Jim Glass Pauline Gonzales Tracy Griffith Joe Guthner Mary Gutierrez Rich Gutierrez Valerie Guzman Vivian Guzman Mike Hammer George Hardy 11 Melinda Harris Pla Hayes Leigh Height Minnie Michelle Hoffman Merle Hudson Becky Hunker Pam Ivey Daniel Johnson Julie Kautz Vernle Keeslar Tim Kelly Troy Korbe Rod Krai Jett Lake Kevin Larson Kelly Leonard Brian Undell Loma Undell 13 14 Shawnette Massey Brad Mayhugh Terri McGaughey Cheryl Miller Dean Moreland Ty Morrow Tom Newland Rosa Perez Warren Quinlln Dolores Ramirez Wade Rieger Mark Romero Brenda Shaver Hlroaki Sugawara Bill Thornsby Jaime Torrez Johnny Trujillo Yolanda Villarreal Geneva Weakley Shawn Weatherlll Honey Wilton Lori Woodward Lynn Ybarra Pam Yeager 15 Class Of '83 Faces A Road Susaane Mine Acosta Margo Danielle Baker Rabert A’an Baker Mark Allen Bass Milford Benjamin Bink Jr. Jett Rowene Blake Connie Lee Boyes Rocha Penny Lorraine Burham Justin Pierce Bzdek Daniel Lewis Case Don L. Terry George. Charlotte Kerr. Yolanda Villarreal. Sonya Arroyo Two new teachers added to the Brush High School Faculty are both in the music department. Miss Judy Meisel was the 1982-83 Marching Con- cert Band director. Along with a new teaching position, she directed the band through many activities. They provided enthusiastic music for all home football games, as well as the State Cham- pionship game. Not only were football games a place where they provided entertainment, but they played at volleyball games, including the State Championship game. The band performed marching routines at a few contests in the fall. They placed second at one marching contest and went on to receive an excellent rating at C.U. Band Day. They also played at the Veteran's Day Program. Once basketball started, the band remained loyal and played at every home game and played at Wrestling Districts also. Along with games, they played at nineteen pep rallies. But pep music isn't all they can play. They performed three excellent concerts throughout the year with some very fine music pieces. In March, twen- ty-eight students performed solo ensemble pieces for the Central Band Contest where the following results were scored: superior ratings- three soloists and six ensembles, excellent rat- ings-one solo and seven ensembles. Two days later the State Solo Ensemble Contest was held. The NEC Band Clinic Concert was held here this year, and then they traveled to Sterling to play at the Large Group State Music Contest where they received an excellent rating. The band fin- ished their busy year by performing at the 1983 graduation ceremony. The other new teacher in the music depart- ment is Judy Carlson. She came to BHS as the choir and the stage band director. She had a busy year being in charge of three music groups. Under her leadership in the Concert Choir, they sang at many performances. They had four con- certs throughout the year and sang at Eben Ezer around Christmas time. In the fall they attended the NEC Choral Clinic. Besides singing in a group, some soloists did their own performing at the Chamber of Commerce and Sunset Manor. Sing- ing at the Solo Ensemble Contest and the Large Ensemble Contest were the competitive events for the choir. The choir gave their last perfor- mance at the Baccalaureate Service on May 27. The other two groups she directed was the Stage Band and Copyright 83. These groups per- formed most of their concerts together. Through- out the year they entertained at many places. Together they gave excellent shows for P.A.C. on November 29 and turned around and per- formed for the Optomist the next day. Copyright 83 sang and danced for the 1st National Bank and later traveled to UNC to show their talent. The Vocal Jazz Festival was another big event for the Copyright group. Sunset Manor residents were the guests of honor at the annual banquet which F.H.A. prepares every year. Last but not least. Student Council chose an outstanding Student of the Month. 74 Drama Club Thespians, a long time club at BHS changed it's name to Drama Club during the 1982-83 school year. This change resulted because of the expense involved in belonging to the National Thespians organiza- tion. Since BHS is in a rural area, this made it difficult for the club to attend conferences. Another reoson was that the qualifications to become a Thespian made it extremely difficult for students to become members. The switch to Drama club made it possible for more students to become members. Under the new organizations requirements a student could become a member if they had participated in a play, whether acting, directing or assisting on the stage crew. The two plays of the 1982-83 school year were; Dear Delinquent and You Can’t Take It With You, which were performed at BHS. The officers of Drama Club were; President, Pat Edson; Vice-President’ Lori Woodward. Business Manager. Mandy Woodward; Secretary. Toni Schultz, and Mr. Krob sponsored the new version of Thespians. 76 Replaces Thespians t a OPPONENT SCORE TW Platte Valley 0-73 Weld Central 0-26 Valley 7-9 Burlington 6-28 Yuma 7-21 Wray 0-47 Burlington 6-27 Yuma 14-28 Wray 14-36 Berthoud 24-56 Denver Cristian 0-14 Trinidad 6-17 Valley 12-41 80 Gridders Take It All For the first time in Brush High School history, the Beetdiggers captured the Class AA State Football Championship. The Result Of A Challenging Season Dedication and hard work put five Brush Wrestlers on the road to State. Unfortunately, there were a few obstacles in their road, and no one made it to the top of the mountain. All in all though, the journey proved to be a challenging and rewarding experience. The five Diggers who set out to conquer this challenge were seniors. Jeff Yearous and Warren Quinlin; junior, Tom Odle; sophomore, Barry Quinlin; and freshman, Gerrard Flores. By wrestling his way through other competitors. Barry Quinlin advanced to the finals and placed fifth. Despite the injury to his back, Jeff Yearous had a successful season and ended his high school wrestling career by taking fourth at State. Cheering Cheerleading squad of 1982-83 topped the year off by having twelve total cheerleaders compared to the less numerous squads of years past. The year started by organizing many projects encouraging money making. Some activities were selling carna- tions, poster calendars, gasoline raffles, hats and Squad leg warmers. Other activities included, pep rallies to boost school spirit and involve competition between classes. This year was very successful for the squads. They performed during half-time for the audience's entertainment, and went to camps for new ideas. (upper row) Yolanda Villereal (middle row) Julie Romero.
