For Tomorrow Is Forever People Clubs Sports Awards Events c 1 o o 52 94 N 126 138 T E N T S p E O P L E Class Of ’82 Looks Toward Tomorrow What does the future hold for the graduating seniors of BHS? Only time will tell, but the 1981-82 school year was a busy one for most seniors. Senior class officers were: Sheila Walkup, president; Kelly Emhovick, vice presi- dent; and Michele Crall, secretary. Homecoming and Prom were two of the major events of the year. The Homecoming theme was Digger Gold” and for the first time in two years the festivities were accompanied by floats. The senior class placed second in the float competition. Southern Nights” was the theme of the Junior-Senior Prom which was also the last dance of the year. Graduation was held outdoors for the first time. On Saturday May 22nd on the football field the class of '82 bid farewell to BHS and took their first step toward their future. Mrs. Woodward and Mr. Woolley sponsored the senior class. 8 Ron Alexander Lance Bailey Jamie Blake Sky Blake Jill Bohling Mitch Bostom Andy Boxer Cyndi Brandenburg Janine Bruce Nancy Campbell Cheryl Castrup Loretta Chabot Robert Chapman Roberta Chavez Jim Chubbuck Michele Crall Janet Crawley Chad Crosswhite 9 10 Jason Cuyler Mike Danielsen Randy Danieisen Jim Davis Ronnie Davis Kim Dean Arthur DeLaFuente Cindy DeLong Mike Diers Andy Ely Kelly Emhovick Dawn Finley Cheryl Ford Scott Galyk Anita Geisick Gayle Genho Tania Giauque Jackie Green Scott Greenwood Tony Gutierrez Ron Gutierrez Kevin Hall Pam Hastings Cathy Hayes 11 Ann Kauffman Jan Kauffman Jim Killough Wanda Killough Heather King Elinor Kivisto Ben Knight Ed Krehmeyer Lorraine Krueger Sophia Laso Brenda Marshall Joel Marwitz 13 14 Shelley McLean Jonna Morris Marc Mullen Tom Murphy Melvin Muth Jeri Ocker Amy Odle Jeff Padilla Cindy Perry Eric Phelan Misty Pickett Jay Poulignot Kay Poulignot Robert Prigmore Martin Ramirez Kim Reitz Bart Rodriguez John Romero Zane Rudnik Eric Ruhl Jodi Salinas Scott Schantz Jennifer Schippert Stephanie Schmer 15 16 Brenda Shelton Dan Skraback Kristi Smith Tom Smith A.J. Under the direction of coach Larry Mills and assistant coaches Bob Bever and Teresa Schaefer, the girls tied for 4th with Fort Lupton with just a few points out of receiving the 3rd place trophy. 115 Two State Runner-Ups..... Brush volleyballers capped off another exciting season by making their third consecutive trip to the State AA Tournament in Colorado Springs, and coming home with a second place trophy. The Beetdiggcrs, who compiled an overall record of 21-4, were led by first year coach Liz Bitzer as they won conference and district championships and advanced all the way to the state finals. The cham- pionship match with Platte Valley marked the end of BHS volleyball careers for seniors Tania Giauque, Amy Odle, and Kim Reitz. 118 How Sweet It Is Six inches was the difference between a state championship and a second place trophy as the Brush Beetdiggers ended their 1982 campaign with a stir of controversy in the state finals against the Windsor Wizards. The Brush gridders, who had an opportunity to win in the closing seconds, came up just inches short on a crucial extra point attempt, and Windsor held on to win by a final score of 14-13. In spite of the season ending loss, the Beetdiggers returned home as reigning conference champions and state runner-ups. So Close, Yet So Far Brush’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams both won sub-district championship and earned berths in the district playoffs, but came up just short of a trip to the state tournament. After a dismal 0-8 start, the lady Diggers turned their season around to make their third straight district appearance, with the last two coming under the direction of head coach Bob Bever. Coach LeeRoy Needens and the boys wrestled the Northeast Conference title away from the defending state champion Yuma Indians. They compiled a 6-0 record in conference play, and like the girls, went on to make their third consecutive district playoff appearance. Playing host to the University High Bulldogs, the Diggers lost a heartbreaking 56-55 decision to end their 1982 campaign. Track Teams Race To Fourth Place Finish Brush was once again the site of the State Track A A Championships. Schools from all over Colorado arrived on May 14th to compete through the 15th, for the top positions in their respective event and to qualify to be a state champion. The Beetdiggers sent eight boys and 11 girls to enter the state meet. Tania Giauque and Michelle Bostrom were the top placers from the girls team, where Mitch Bostrom and Tom Newland earned a state placing with their events. Out of 56 Colorado teams who participated in the State Championships, both Brush teams tied for fourth place with their team scoring overall. Wrestlers Escape With Seventh Brush Beetdigger wrestling sent five qualifiers to the State Tournaments in Denver this year. Warren Quinlin and Felix Flores did not place at the tour- nament. Jim Glass and Jeff Yearous both qualified for a fourth place standing in their divisions. Mitch Bostrom placed first in his match for the second consecutive year in the State Championships. 122 Bostrom Makes History At B.H.S. History was made at B.H.S. this year by senior Mitch Bostrom. Through his tremendous athletic ability and his leadership qualities, Mitch is the first Brush High School student to qualify as an All-Stater in three sporting events. Mitch has performed outstandingly well throughout his 4 years at B.H.S. The editors and staff of Sagebrush '82 honor his achievements and feature Mitch on this page. Yea For Our Side! Brush High School cheerleaders made the 1981-82 school year a very busy one by having many money-making projects. The year consisted of selling corsages at Homecoming, selling poster calendars, and a raffle of gift certificates for gasoline. The cheerleaders for fall season were Mary Gutierrez (Head), Julie Kautz, Brenda Marshall and Kim Ruhl. Winter sport cheerleaders were Mary Gutierrez (Head), Julie Kautz, Kim Ruhl, Brenda Marshall, and Nadine Trujillo.
